1.5 Native American of the Northwest Coast

Abundant Food Northwest people found food plentiful, particularly from the sea. They built their villages along the narrow beaches and bays of the coastline, and on nearby islands. They gathered clams, other shellfish, and seaweed from shallow waters. They ventured onto the sea in canoes to hunt seals, sea lions, and whales, as well as halibut and other fish. The forests provided deer, moose, bear, elk, beaver, and mountain goat.

HW: Diary Entry from the perspective of a Native American on pg. 21 of Notebook

Dear Diary (Pacific Northwest)This morning I woke up to the lovely sounds of

the oceans flowing near me. It stormed last night, and I knew the beach would be scattered with washed up clams, shellfish, and maybe even some fish.

I remembered back to when I killed my first seal with my long, wooden spear. It had also washed up on the shore after a storm. Although I love seafood, nothing compares to when salmon season comes, and there will an abundance of rich fresh water fish.
