ABSTRACTThis Michigan Kids Count data book for 1994 describes
the condition of children in each of Michigan's 83 counties. Thefirst part of the report presents discussions of economic security, housing, child care, education, and health care, addressing the stateand national experience for families and children, critical issues, and policies and programs with the potential to affect outcomes forchildren. The second part of the report presents a more detailedpicture for each county in five (1) economic security (the geographicdistribution of poverty within counties); (2) 10-year trends in riskybirths using three health indicators: teenage mothers with inadequateprenatal care; low birthweight babies; births to teens without a highschool diploma; (3) education outcomes as reflected in the basicskills test results (Michigan Education Assessment Program scores)for 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th, 10th and 11th grades; (4) trends in ratechanges over time for each county on eight key indicators of childwell-being (inadequate prenatal care, low birth-weight babies, birthsto teens with no diplomas, infant mortality, child deaths, teenviolent deaths, serious (index) crime arrests, and high schooldropouts (1993); and (5) county trends compared to statewide trends. The report notes that, overall, the majority of Michigan's childrenare adequately housed and nurtured. However, there is a growing shareof the state's children who are not being reared with these supports. These children can be found in urban, suburban, and ruralcommunities. The report's appendix presents annual data for tenindicators for the state and counties. (AA)
