President´s Message

The successive recent challenges in Lebanon have only strengthened our commitment and our belief in the necessity of our work and presence alongside our community. Makassed programs and projects overlapped between relief, charity and long-term development projects. Donors and supporters who believe in Makassed had the greatest credit in helping us respond quickly to the developments inour country

From an academic perspective, the internal modernization of the Educational Affairs department was made possible through new policies and projects based on social, technological and educational improvements and is gradually implemented in all Makassed schools. The firm and new direction taken includes various curricula, equipment and technologies, as well as a mechanism for continuous professional growth in a rich and safe educational environment that allows learners to develop their potential and competencies and achieve success in their scientific, professional and life paths. This is in addition to providing the necessary training for teachers from prestigious American, European and national universities (Harvard, INSEAD, LAU

In the health sector, and in response to the COVID pandemic, Makassed General Hospital (MGH) was one of the first private hospitals in Lebanon to be fully equipped to receive cases and joined the centers accredited by the Lebanese authorities to conduct laboratory tests to detect the virus and treat patients. The hospital set up a

isolation section, in addition to securing adequate housing for the medical staff and providing them with the necessary training

in terms of social services, the association gave strategic importance to building the capacity of women and youth (both Lebanese and non-Lebanese( and preparing them to join the labor market through cooperation with UNICEF, UNDP and USAID Programs. Thousands were trained and successfully completed the accelerated and free vocational training courses. Ward Al Makassed, our women empowerment center, implemented income generating activities for women and youth, by providing make-up, sewing, cooking and chocolate making workshops. The opening of a store located in the lobby of MGH contributed to the marketing and sale of products made by Ward Al Makassed, and provided a much needed income to womenaffiliated with it

In addition to our continuous work and in keeping pace with the economic conditions in Lebanon, Makassed has initiated and developed an emergency plan to cover the basic needs of all those in need of food, medicine and daily hot meals, without any discrimination of gender, race or sex, and supported in the cleaning and repair 4th deadly of homes affected by the August explosion in Beirut port. As for the Funeral

Services, Makassed improved and restored its cemeteries and secured the necessary burial means to those who died from the

Makassed has always been in direct contact with its people, and their needs are of its utmost priorities. We have at heart to ensure that the zakat and donations of our supporters and philanthropists reach directly those in need, whether it is to treat a patient, providehelp to the less fortunate, or teach students

Many challenges still await us in the coming years, especially with the continuing repercussions of the economic and health crisis affecting a large number of families in Lebanon

Today, more than ever, Makassed is committed to support those in need and help them improve their economic, social, and living conditions. Makassed adheres to its principles by continuing to develop and provide education, health, and social services to all, in order to build a better future. This cannot be achieved without strengthening our partnership with government institutions, NGOs, private companies, in addition todonors

Last but not least, I would like to express my deepest gratitude and thank our partners and donors in Lebanon and abroad who support us and help us move forward in achieving ournoble mission

Since its inception in 1878, Makassed has been a leading pioneer in community development andcapacity building in Lebanon within three mainsectors: Education, Health and Social Affairs.

Following the 4th of August Beirut Port explosion,Makassed dedicated its efforts to support the in- jured and provide basic needs of those affected by the crisis: such as food and medical supplies, in addition to rebuilding and repairing affected homes. The 4th of August catastrophe has left noone behind, caused mass-destruction in the cap- ital Beirut, and severe damage to its historical heritage, including the Association’s historical buildings. The explosion’s damages resulted in amillions of dollars restoration bill.n

The port blast added to an economic contraction and the COVID-19 global pandemic, which hasput a great strain over the Lebanese healthcaresector.

About Makassed

Through its interventions, Makassed Association currently seeks to build a just, equal-opportu-nity society, built on the pillars of open dialogue, partnerships, education, knowledge, universal healthcare access and prosperity, to all members of society and most importantly, underprivileged, outcasted communities.n

Enhancing Stability: Opened Opportunities for Resilient Lebanese and Non-Lebanese Youth - UNICEF

With a generous support from UNICEF, Makassed continued the implementation of “Enhancing Stability: Opened Opportunities for Resilient Lebanese and Non-Lebanese Youth” by providing accelerated vocational trainings. Makassed aims to increase the number of beneficiaries (both males and females( due to the recent economic crisis and to contribute to their development with different specializations to help them secure employment opportunities. The trainings are offered to Lebanese and non-Lebanese youth, free of charge and are implemented in Beirut, Mount Lebanon, Akkar in North Lebanon, and the Beqaa Valley. Through this project, Makassed strives to help beneficiaries secure skills to improve their living conditions and face future challenges. In its second year, the program targeted 1,100 young men and women between 15 and 24 years’ old who have dropped out of school. It helped them develop their capabilities and improved their access to better job opportunities. In 2019, the UNICEF project targeted 9,032 male and female beneficiaries.

The project «Empowering Youth and Women through Skills Development» aims to provide Lebanese and non-Lebanese youth with vocational training programs that will increase their self-reliance and equip them with technical skills and tools to facilitate their entry into the job market. Within the framework of the USAID-BALADI CAP project, the aim was to target 420 beneficiaries between the ages of 15 and 35. The main objective of the USAID-BALADI CAP project and Makassed is achieved by providing registered trainees with professional training and life skills as well as language improvement courses. In addition, 84 beneficiaries were selected based on their performance in the training assessments and their commitment to the course to undergo a training period in the various Makassed establishments to gain hands-on practical experience in their field of specialization.

In cooperation with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP( on the project «Empowering Women in Poverty Pockets in Beirut», Makassed registered 130 women aged 18 years old and above and provided them with trainings in five different fields: artisanal work and crochet, cooking and catering, chocolate and desserts making, pottery and ceramics as well as beauty care. All trainings were held at Ward Al Makassed from August 2020 till December 2020. While completing their vocational trainings, a selected number of women had the opportunity to participate in income-generating activities and benefited from additional trainings in business and life skills relevant to their trainings. Life skills training provided women with practical work methods and different pathways to enter the labour market, whether through start-ups, freelance services, and other employment options available at hand. Topics covered during the training included the fundamentals of business planning, budgeting, problem solving, critical thinking, cooperation, and self-expression in their field of study. During the project phases, five income generating activities were completed. The whole purpose of this project is to provide women with an opportunity to develop their skills through various activities and improve their living conditions by facilitating their entry into the labour market. After the August 4th explosion, one of the initiatives within the framework of the UNDP project was to provide similar rapid trainings for women and youth affected by the blast. Women who enrolled in the handicraft as well as Beauty Care classes received a special toolkit at the end of their training to allow them to start a small business and earn their own income.
