This volume, as its title indicates

s a collection of engravings illustrativof the Biblethe designs being all fro

    warm recognition and acceptance amon

    narrative form, and containing generall

a brief analysis of the design. Asid

from the labors of the editor an

publishers, the work, while in progresswas under the pains-taking and carefu

scrutiny of artists and scholars no

directly interested in the undertaking, bu

still having a generous solicitude for it

success. It is hoped, therefore, that it

general plan and execution will render

acceptable both to the appreciative anfriendly patrons of the great artist, and t

hose who would wish to possess such

work solely as a choice collection o

    llustrations upon sacred themes.

    GUSTAVE DORE.

The subject of this sketch is

perhaps, the most original and variouslgifted designer the world has eve

known. At an age when most men hav

scarcely passed their novitiate in art

and are still under the direction andiscipline of their masters and th

schools, he had won a brillian

reputation, and readers and scholareverywhere were gazing on his wor

    with ever-increasing wonder and deligh

at his fine fancy and multifarious gifts

He has raised illustrative art to a dignit

and importance before unknown, and ha

    developed capacities for the penci

before unsuspected. He has laid al

subjects tribute to his genius, exploreand embellished fields hitherto lyin

waste, and opened new and shinin

paths and vistas where none before ha

rod. To the works of the great he ha

added the lustre of his genius, bringin

heir beauties into clearer view an

warming them to a fuller life. His delineations of character, in th

different phases of life, from the horribl

o the grotesque, the grand to the comic

attest the versatility of his powers; and

whatever faults may be found by critics

he public will heartily render thei

quota of admiration to his magic touch

his rich and facile rendering of almos

every thought that stirs, or lies ye

dormant, in the human heart. It is useles

o attempt a sketch of his varioubeauties; those who would know the

best must seek them in the treasure

house that his genius is constantl

augmenting with fresh gems and wealth

To one, however, of his most prominen

    raits we will referhis wonderfu

rendering of the powers of Nature. His early wanderings in the wil

and romantic passes of the Vosge

    doubtless developed this inheren

endency of his mind. There h

    wandered, and there, mayhap, imbibe

hat deep delight of wood and valley

variety of form and detail seems endles

o the enchanted eye. He has caught th

very spell of the wilderness; she has lai

her hand upon him, and he has gone fortwith her blessing. So bold and truthfu

    and minute are his countles

    representations of forest scenery; s

delicate the tracery of branch and stem

so patriarchal the giant boles of hi

woodland monarchs, that the' gazer is a

once satisfied and entranced. His vistaie slumbering with repose either i

shadowy glade or fell ravine, either wit

glint of lake or the glad, long course o

some rejoicing stream, and above alsupreme in a beauty all its own, h

spreads a canopy of peerless sky, or

earth has rendered all her gifts.Paul Gustave Dore was born in th

    city of Strasburg, January 10, 1833. O

his boyhood we have no very particulaaccount. At eleven years of age

however, he essayed his first artisti

published in his native city. Thfollowing year found him in Paris

entered as a 7. student at th

    enhanced by his subsequent works.

With all his love for nature and hi

power of interpreting her in her varyin

moods, Dore was a dreamer, and manof his finest achievements were in th

realm of the imagination. But he was a

home in the actual world also, awitness his designs for "Atala," "Londo

a Pilgrimage," and many of the scene

    n "Don Quixote."

When account is taken of thvariety of his designs, and the fac

considered that in almost every task h

attempted none had ventured before himhe amount of work he accomplished i

    fairly incredible. To enumerate the

some faint idea of his industry. Beside

    "Legende de Croquemitaine," L
