University of Northern Colorado
Celebrates Day of Music at Dos Rios
As part of the University of Northern Colorado (UNC) School of Music’s Day of Music, Dos Rios hosted UNC’s world music percussion and dance ensemble on Friday, October 5.
The UNC Day of Music is an annual event, and as noted on the UNC School of Music’s website, students “flood the Greeley community with music, booking shows and performing all day, all over town. Students are liberated to dream big, create professional partnerships, and do what they love—play music and share their art with the community.“
Led by Sean Goldman, UNC Graduate Teaching Assistant, UNC dancers and musicians first performed traditional music from Brazil and Ghana for the Dos Rios students. Then the dancers and musicians taught a traditional Ghanian dance to all of the Dos Rios students who performed the dance in large groups.

Mr. Goldman also assisted Dos Rios in refurbishing wood and metal Orff instruments, which had been in storage. Dos Rios K-2 students have already been using these instruments to make music.
Golden Pencil Promotes Student Agency
At Dos Rios, every month students can submit an entry for the Golden Pencil Writing Contest, sponsored by the (imaginary) Council on Pencils and Eras-ers. The purpose of the Golden Pencil Writing Contest is to promote student agency in writing and help learners dis-cover the pleasure of writing. All writing must be original and parents, teachers, and staff cannot assist the student writ-ers. Each month there is a different writ-ing prompt or genre, but students can also choose to write about anything they like instead. Winners for each grade are honored with a certificate presented at the PBIS assembly, breakfast with the principals, a small prize package, and of course, an engraved golden pencil.
For the month of October, Dos Rios learners were invited to create original poems on leaves for the Poetry Tree, located in the front lobby of Dos Rios. Well done, Dos Rios poetry writers! After Thanksgiving dinner, do you ever get bored? How about during Thanks-giving break, do you ever run out of things to do? Hey, why not try some writing for the Golden Pencil Writing Contest? It's fun! And the only ones allowed to see your writing are the members of the Council on Pencils and Erasers. The Council just wants to see what you have to say.

The writing prompt or idea for the Golden Pencil Writing Contest for November is your choice:
- I am thankful or grateful for …
OR
- If I had a pet turkey, I would…
OR
- Compare and contrast: If I were a pilgrim, my life would be the same or different be-cause…
If you want to write about something else, that’s great! But whatever you write about, be sure to tell us all about your thoughts and ideas. The Council loves details!
Entries are due the last day of the month so Friday, November 30th.

Dos Rios Kindergarteners
Celebrate “50’s Day”
Kindergarteners from Mrs. Cisneros’, Mrs. Lindgren’s, and Ms. Nonie’s classes recently celebrated
their 50th day of school by dressing in the style of the 1950s, while also engaging in many activities
and games centered around 50. It’s hard to believe we are half-way to 100!
Kindergartner Max Acosta Arevalo votes on his favorite playground design with a blue dot sticker. Students recently had an opportunity to vote on their favorite design during parent teacher conferences.
