Somebody call 911! The city is burning up!yes, it is that time of year again.

it’s the time when the women (and a few men) of Kamloops flock in groups with one burning desire: To pick up the new Kam-loops Firefighters Calendar! The anticipation is over and the 2013 gem can now be in your hot little hands by the end of the day. This is year number three for the char-ity and it has proven itself to be one of Kamloops most popular fundraisers.

This year’s recipients are the royal inland hospital Foun-dation Fund and a charity that is very close to the firefighters hearts, the bC professional Fire-fighters Burn Fund. This incred-ible, province wide charity helps the victims of fire and their fami-lies with support and life enrich-ing services.

Local firefighter, Ryan Cail is a long time volunteer of the burn Fund. “More than 3800 profes-sional firefighters dedicate and donate their time and skills to support burn survivors and create public awareness on fire preven-tion.” says ryan.

What is most impressive about this charity is the fact that not a single position is paid. it is 100 percent volunteer based. Last year, the 2012 calendar raised $40,000 that was split equally be-tween the two charities. This year,

the Kamloops Firefighter’s have printed 2500 calendars. if they sell out, like they usually do, they will raise $50,000! “Every single dollar raised goes directly to the charities,” says ryan. The calen-dar is completely paid for by the generosity of local sponsors.

so what can we expect from this years work? Exactly what we have all come to know and love. A handful of Kamloops finest getting out of their comfort zone

(and shirts), to strut their stuff for a great cause. There are a handful of new faces this year to grace the glossy pages, but some of the past calendar favourites as well.

When asked the obvious ques-tion, “Why do you think this cal-endar is so popular?” Ryan replies with a smile, but in all modesty, “we always try to have something that can go on grandma’s wall as well as have enough sex appeal to entice all. it’s something that

looks decent to the eye but is for a great cause.” no argument here.

The City of Kamloops invites residents to come celebrate world rivers day, an event sponsored by BC Hydro, on Saturday, September 29th, near the band shell at Riverside Park. The goal of this event is to increase awareness of water related issues.

world rivers day is a free, family event from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. Booths will be set up by local not-for-profit agencies and businesses to share information on how they support the environment and promote sustainability within our com-munity. Some of the exhibitors include bC hydro, bC wildlife Park, Bear Aware, Kamloops Museum and archives, Tru SIFE, TRU Sustainability, the

department of Fisheries and oceans, and many more.

Musical guests “Just Like That” will be attending along with guest speakers and face painting for the kids. A drum-ming circle will be performing a song for Mother earth as well.

additionally, throughout the day there will be various activi-ties and interactive games for the whole family. everyone will have opportunities to win water saving gadgets and the chance to “fish” for prizes. There will be a grand prize draw for those who complete the event passport of sCuba lessons tuition, courtesy of ocean pacific watersports. Free lunch will be provided for those who participate in the great

Canadian shoreline Clean-up. ocean pacific watersports will be cleaning up the riverbed as well with their scuba gear.

The event began in 1980, when Mark Angelo founded BC rivers day. in 2005, the event expanded to the entire world, creating world rivers day. with close to 100,000 people par-ticipating in British Columbia alone, world rivers day will continue to increase awareness of water-related issues and pro-mote core values associated with sustainability, conserva-tion, and river stewardship.

PeoPle UniTe! Take Back The nighT!People who want streets and homes to be safer places for women and children once again came out to rally and march to call an end to violence. On Friday, September 21, women and men of all ages gathered for the annual “Take Back the Night” March. This year, the speeches and rally began at 5:30pm at The Grind, 476 Victoria Street with Dodie Goldney’s great singing beforehand. This years “Take Back the Night” March in Kamloops continued its emphasis on “Safety Rights for all Women” – including those who are most marginalized due to poverty, street or drug involvement or being homeless. For Kamloops Sexual Assault Counselling Centre’s (KSACC) 30th anniversary year, men were also being invited to March with the women and children to show solidarity and support!

Zap! Bang! kapow!The TNRD Library System’s

Kamloops Library, in partnership with high octane Comics, is hosting its first ever Mini Comic-Con. The event takes place Saturday, October 6, starting at 2:00pm and features an appearance by a well-established comic-book artist, as well as fun art and costume contests that offer prizes.

Open to teens 13 to 18 years old, the inaugural Mini Comic-Con will be high-lighted by the appearance of Vancouver-based manga artist Nina Matsumoto, a.k.a. “Space Coyote.” Matsumoto is an Eisner Award-winning comic-book artist who has released two volumes of her original manga Yokaiden through del rey Manga. a lifelong fan of The simpsons, she also regularly pencils for bongo Comics (simpsons Comics, bart simpson Comics).

Matsumoto, with some help from high Octane Comics, will also act as judge for the Mini Comic-Con’s art contest. budding artists are encouraged to create an original 2-d art piece in comic or manga style on any topic (keep it clean!) and in any media. Contestants are asked to keep the size of their artwork to a maximum of 18 inches by 24 inches for display purposes. entries should be dropped off at the Children’s Desk at Kamloops Library by Wednesday, October 3, at 5:00pm.

All art will be displayed in the library and judging will take place the day of the event. Winners will be announced that day, too, with first prize supplied by High Octane Comics. There will also be an entry selected as a fan favourite. and don’t forget to dress up, as there will be a prize for best costume!

Photo contest raises awareness of wasteful behaviour

Eleanor Hancock is looking forward in sharing her love of writing. Take her interactive course that incor-porates the generating of ideas, plot development, use of the five senses, place, dialogue, editing, and critiquing, all leading to the writing of two to four short stories. There will be several no-stress writing activities per session. in this supportive atmosphere, discussion will precede each writing activity.

eleanor is an amateur historian and author. she writes emails, short stories, tries to write humour and attempts to turn a mere letter into an elevated art form. eleanor was the editor of the Kamloops Museum association’s newsletter for 11 years and education director on the board of the Kamloops Wildlife Park for seven years. a primary teacher, she was a teacher-on-call with the School District 73 for 12 years. She is a member of the interior author’s group, the unitarian Church and sings in two choirs in Kamloops.

A vision of creating a future without breast cancer

The Canadian breast Cancer Foundation CibC run for the Cure is the largest single-day, volunteer-led nation-al event in Canada in support of breast cancer. Last year, in Kamloops, 1300 walkers and runners raised over $189,000.

This year’s CibC Canadian breast Cancer Foundation run for the Cure is on Sunday, September 30 at 9:00 a.m. at the band shell at Riverside Park.

while most chil-dren are spending their saturday afternoons play-ing with friends, one six-year is raising funds for the cause and having plenty of fun in the process.

Mikaela York has been collect-ing bottles since mid August as a fundraiser for her participation in the CibC run for the Cure. after volunteering to hand out water to local boogie the bridge runners with her mother earlier this sum-mer, Mikaela found she enjoyed volunteering and jumped at the suggestion to join a local Run for the Cure team. as a partici-pant in the seeds of hope Team, Mikaela has shown drive and determination not found in many

adults. She has been a creative fundraiser, spending saturday afternoons collecting bottles from family, friends, neighbours and even collecting at her own daycare for a week.

Her mother, Denise York remarks “She has certainly learned that it is hard work rais-ing money, but she has also learned that it is important to help people and this is an impor-tant cause.“

Tickled pink for dessertsFrom now until October 16, there’s a good reason to say YES to des-

sert! A number of restaurants in Kamloops are joining forces for the annual Tickled Pink Desserts campaign in support of the Canadian breast Cancer Foundation CibC run for the Cure.

ric’s grill, The Commodore grand Café and Lounge and The Firesde Steakhouse and Bar at The Plaza Hotel have created a special pink des-sert or identified an existing dessert from their menu as part of the cam-paign. For each dessert sold, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to support breast cancer research, education and awareness programs.

“This is the third year the Tickled Pink Dessert campaign is running in Kamloops and we are very excited to once again work with a number of fantastic restaurants to help raise awareness and funds for breast cancer,” said Starr Webb, Co-Run Director for the Kamloops Run site. “We hope the community gets a chance to visit at least one of the participating res-taurants and support the cause by sampling their Tickled Pink dessert.”
