Diction Reference Source
Diction by Joan Wall and Robert Caldwell, addressing all the major sung
languages, is one of the nation’s most frequently used texts on the subject. In their new edition in 2011, an online interactive component was added in which
students will hear sounds and words pronounced by an expert speaker; students will have the opportunity not only to repeat the sound or word, but also to play
back both examples, repeating the drill as desired. At the invitation of Mr. Caldwell, I served as the expert for both the Italian and
the Latin chapters of this new edition, recording all of the spoken examples for both languages; the recording went live in fall 2011 and is currently in use. This
is a significant scholarly contribution.

Artistic Director of National Conference:
CollabFest and CollabWeek at UNT 2016 and 2017 In October 2015, I served as one of two coordinators for an event celebrating a “big” birthday
of my mentor, Alan Smith, Chair of Keyboard Studies at the University of Southern California. This event gathered over thirty alumni of the program from all over the country, as well as
some former colleagues. While being first and foremost a personal tribute to a man who has had deep influence in my life, my co-chair Lisa Sylvester (USC) and I visioned this as the first of a type of “conference” to be expanded upon in the near future. In spring 2016, while on sabbatical, I began developing a festival to take place at UNT. That
event was CollabFest. As far as we know, this was the first conference ever in any location to be devoted exclusively to collaborative piano. The event featured ten faculty presenter-performers. Guest faculty, including Anne Epperson (Indiana University), Ann Baltz (OperaWorks) and Margaret Singer (Opera de Paris), joined UNT faculty and other guests for a full day of sessions, performances and fellowship. The event was a great success, creating incredible visibility for our programs at UNT. The October 22 conference was the culmination
of what became “CollabWeek”: the week began with three days of intense study of Russian language and vocal literature in classes and in coachings with Prof. Kenneth Griffiths of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. (The residency included six hours of diction classes and eight hours of public masterclass, in addition to small group and private sessions, all of which I coordinated). Following that residency, UNT alum Dr. Willem van Schalkwyk came for two days during which he gave classes for opera and for collaborative piano.
Based on the overwhelming positive response to CollabFest at UNT 2016, I expanded the event to a two day conference at UNT for 2017. Featured guest faculty included Dr. Jean Barr (Eastman School of Music), Dr. Dana Brown (Roosevelt University), in addition to seventeen other faculty from around the country and from UNT. Topics ranged from self-care and injury prevention to skills and repertoire based sessions; a student showcase recital featured
collaborative pianists from thirteen years of age through young professionals. CollabFest at UNT 2017 was the culmination of CollabWeek at UNT: the week began with a three day residency given by internationally acclaimed composer Tom Cipullo. Mr. Cipullo worked with nearly twenty student singers and pianists in private coachings and public masterclasses, and prepared performers for a showcase recital of his works, which included the world premiere of a new cycle commissioned by Michael Anthony McGee and performed with Dr. Liza
Stepanova (University of Georgia, SongFest). CollabFest is intented to take place throughout the country, and CollabFest at USC took place in October 2017, under the artistic leadership of Dr. Lisa Sylvester, for whom I served as advisor.
Please see http://collaborativepiano.music.unt.edu/, searching the CollabFest dropdown, for more information about the festival, schedule and faculty.
