This document contains interactive wireframes that illustrate how information and interaction is structured for Phase 2 of CRDCN's website redesign.

These wireframes are a working document and aims to facilitate discussion for the detailed build-out of the CRDCN web presence. Details are subject to change.

For which wireframes have been completed, refer to the Site Map on the next page.

Wireframes not yet completed:• additional search options• page for a full list of RDCs

Wireframes that are not required:• conference page (conference mini-site, ready for next year)• current projects page (similar to publications)• search results page• how to apply for access to data (hosted at StatsCan)

Wireframes that may be required later but are not included in this phase:• layout for individual RDCs• forms where each RDC can manage their location, opening hours and contact information• form for adding publications

HistoryThe creation of a national system of Research Data Centres (RDCs) was one of several recommendations made by the Joint Working Group on the Advancement of Research Using Social Statistics set up by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and Statistics Canada.

The group’s Final Report (December 1998) began:“Canada’s social policy has not kept pace with the dramatic changes in its economic policy in the past two decades.” While “we have a number of excellent and timely social surveys covering a number of topics,… as a nation we have very little capacity to conduct social policy research, evaluate social programs or monitor progress toward achieving social aims.” It went on to highlight three significant barriers to be overcome for Canada to develop its research capacity in social statistics:1. Lack of access to detailed micro-data2. Lack of trained researchers in significant numbers3. Weak links between social scientists and potential users of the knowledge they generate and recommended the development of three components which together would comprise the Canadian Initiative on the Social Sciences. The first included two proposals to improve access to detailed micro-data: i) establishing Research Data Centres and ii) enhancing and expanding the Data Liberation Initiative.

A short paragraph describing what an RDC is and what it offers. Possibly only about 5-6 sentences long.

Research Data Centres (RDCs)

Partners and sponsors

The Network has developed through the support and collaboration of its many partners and sponsors - including forty-two Canadian universities.

Statistics Canada has partnered the Network from the outset, providing the data sets housed in the centres and contributing directly and indirectly, through the Research Data Centre Program, to the operation of the Network and to the research activity conducted in the centres.

• Canada Foundation for Innovation• Social Science and Humanities Research Countil• Canadian Institues of Health Research

Other partners and sponsors(full list of partners/sponsors here).

There should be a line for interested partners (also universities who want to open an RDC) to get in touch.

About the CRDCNSince 2000, the Canadian Research Data Centre Network (CRDCN), in partnership with Statistics Canada, has transformed quantitative social science research in Canada. In secure laboratories located on university campuses across Canada, university and government researchers are able to exploit the full potential of a vast, and constantly expanding, array of social, economic and health data, including Statistics Canada's survey and census data.

How to access RDC dataThe Research Data Centres (RDCs) offer Canada's research community free access

to Statistics Canada's individual or household survey master files (detailed

microdata), access to the census analytical files (detailed microdata of the

20% sample of individuals who have answered the 2b form), and some

administrative data sets. Access is provided in a secure setting in universities

across the country.

To access the detailed microdata housed in the Research Data Centres (RDCs), you are required to submit a project proposal to the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) and Statistics Canada.

Previous findings on older adults’ awareness of community support services (CSSs) have been inconsistent and marred by acquiescence or over-claiming bias. To address this issue, this study used a series of 12 vignettes to describe common situations faced by older adults for which CSSs might be appropriate. In telephone interviews, 1,152 adults aged 50 years and over were read a series of vignettes and asked if they were able to identify a community organization or agency that they may turn to in that situation. They were also asked about their most important sources of information about CSSs. The findings show that, using a vignette methodology, awareness of CSSs is much lower than previously thought. The most important sources of information about CSSs included information and referral sources, the telephone book, doctors’ offices, and word of mouth.
