Dörries CONTUMAT VCE, VC, VC-V Vertical turning lathes Vertical turning centres
All of a piece
From a modular design concept Dörries CONTUMAT vertical turning lathes can be configured to meet both standard applications as well as the most specific and demanding client requirements.
Each modular element of the machine structure features compact finite element method (FEM) designed machine components of cast iron construction. All modules feature the same common design principles of excellent vibration-damping as well as high rigidity, resistance to bending and torsional strength, thermo-stability and low expansion coefficients. Dörries guarantees the utmost precision, highly satisfactory metal removal rates as well as good surface quality and durability.
All Dörries CONTUMAT turning lathes can be configured to drill, mill and grind if required. All lathes can be used as standalone machines, supplemented with pallet systems, or linked together with other machines. Appropriate additional equipment can be included for the measurement of workpieces or tools.

04 Dörries VCE
The single column vertical turning lathe Dörries CONTUMAT VCE is a compact design manufactured from vibration-damping cast iron components. An even temperature distribution is assured through the symmetrical drive and frame design. All main machine groups are calculated and optimised using the finite element method regarding stiffness and cross sections.

Main drive / C-axis drive
The main drive is powered by one or two electrically preloaded drive units with asynchronous motors. The version with two motors (master-slave principle) permits exact positioning and feed motion of the machine tables in a numerically-controlled C-axis for boring and milling, as well as the highest dynamics in turning.
Column unit
The VCE column unit consists of the column base and modular upper column parts. It is symmetrically built and supports the crossrail with two large dimensioned box section guide-ways.
1 Base housing2 Main drive3 Axial bearing4 Radial bearing5 Geared ring
Machine base
The inherently rigid machine base features a thermosymmetrical design. The pre-stressed ball and roller bearings ensure impeccable running accuracy. The machine table is supported by a large-dimensioned axial thrust bearing.
Dörries VCE 07
Crossrails
– High inherent rigidity– Hydrostatic guideways in X-axis– Good emergency running properties– High positioning accuracy via
precision rack and index bolts– Clamping of the guides during
machining for highest stiffness
The crossrails are adjusted by means of a lifting unit. The crossrails are hydraulically clamped and positioned by index bolts at intervals of 100 mm.

Main drive
The main drive features either one individual, or two electrically pre-loaded, drive units (in master-slave operation).
Machine base
The inherently rigid machine frame features a thermosymmetrically design. The large-dimensioned axial thrust bearing supports the machine table and workpiece weight. Radial guidance is assured by means of a preloaded angular contact ball bearing.
Portal
The portal design consists of two columns connected by a large section crossbeam. The symmetrical design of the portal provides the crossrail guidance via two large box section guideways.
The table drive of either a three or four shaft arrangement enables the highest efficiency and performance to be achieved.

Tool holders
The Dörries tool holder system is available in two versions – one for machines that are designed exclusively for turning and one for machines that complete multi-functional tasks involv-ing turning, drilling, milling and grind-ing. The external tool holder can be used to hold and drive several types of lathe holder and all variants of machining heads and auxiliary units.
The crossbeam support is manufac-tured from grey cast iron and consists of a slide and a ram enclosed in a housing. The closed guiding system ensures the highest degree of accura-cy and a high level of damping. The tempered, forged steel ram is hydro-statically guided on all sides. The form-fit base holder system enables the base tool holder to hold and clamp tools automatically with a high degree of rigidity and precision during holder exchange. The design of the interface ensures a rigid support of the cutting forces during turning without effecting the integrated drilling / milling spindle.
