PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM
Knowledge and competence in your eld of research are vital foun-dations for a successful doctorate. Equally important is a range of
key competencies that are crucial not only for your academic deve-lopment, but also in other professional contexts: Communicatingadequately in dierent settings, organizing yourself and your work, and mastering IT are examples of this. The fact that only a maxi-mum of 1 out of 10 doctoral researchers continue their career inacademia highlights the need for a varied skill set even more.
The Professional Development Program of Dahlem ResearchSchool takes this into account and helps you to prepare for die-rent career paths.
Academic Performance courses are designed to provide guidancein obtaining your doctorate and successfully navigating your aca-demic life. On the basis of the principles of research integ-rity, theworkshops hone your reading, writing and teaching skills and sup-port you in publishing and presenting your research and defendingyour dissertation.

Management Competency courses give you the opportunity to ac-quire and improve additional skills that complement your academicperformance and prepare you to take on responsible positions inyour future career. You will nd workshops focusing on a range of
IT tools, support for motivating and organizing yourself, as well asstrategies for improving your networking skills.
Each career requires individual planning. Our program providesyou with courses that support you along the way, from exploringyour options and choosing a career path to applying for jobs. Otheroerings give you a chance to gain new perspectives by e.g. gettingacquainted with the basics of economics.
TRAINING COACHING MENTORING
Within our Professional Development Program you can choose be-tween dierent educational formats depending on your needs andcareer goals.
Training sessions constitute the major part of our program. In one-to two-day highly interactive workshops our experienced trainersinstruct you in achieving expertise and mastering new skills in va-
rious elds, for instance about the best way to present yourself andyour research results, teach at university level or organise your time.
Coaching in small groups aims at developing your awareness andthe power to reect on your existing skills and knowledge and help-ing you to nd the best way to enhance your performance. Ourqualied coaches guide you in nding, trying and evaluating ef-fective motivation strategies for completing your doctoral studiesor in determining your professional potential in order to devise asuitable career strategy.
Mentoring aims to support female doctoral candidates in explo-ring and pursuing their career options. It brings them together withexperienced professional mentors who oer guidance, encourage-ment and support. Mentors and mentees meet regularly through-out a one-year program and participate in specially designed work-shops, coachings and networking events.

OPEN DOOR TALKS
DRS Open Door Talks is a lecture series addressing all students, doctoral candidates and postdocs. Experts from dierent occupa-
tional elds share their individual experiences and discuss with youhow to make the right career move. Other Open Door Talks dealwith funding opportunities for research stays abroad or postdoc-toral projects.
QUALITY ASSURANCE
Our mission is to constantly improve our Qualication Pro-gram and to enhance the quality of our doctoral candidates'learning and development.
Trainers and coaches are recruited and selected on thebasis of their professional experience and outstandingqualications.
The course program is regularly reviewed and revisedto meet the current needs and proles of the courseparticipants.
Course assessment ensures the evaluators anonymity. The results of course assessments are compared to
those of other workshops from the same semesterand analysed with the trainers in a positive assessmentclimate, ensuring that feedback from the participantsleads to concrete improvements.
All services on oer at Dahlem Research School are reviewedannually. For further information on our quality assuranceactivities, please visit our website: www.fu-berlin.de/drs

Young academics learn that conferences provide not only the op-portunity to present their work, but also themselves. Communica-tion in professional forums is often decisive for future career op
-
tions. After this workshop, participants are able to plan professionalgatherings in advance and feel more comfortable in the social set-ting of their academic community. More importantly, they are ableto set their own goals when attending conferences and to developconcrete strategies of achieving them.
This workshop helps you to meet people with an attitude that isboth adequate and self-condent, in a variety of conference situ-
ations, e.g. "socials". Both verbal and non-verbal strategies will beconsidered.
Specically, you will learn how to identify players, roles and goals in conference settings, how to conduct themselves professionally, how to initiate and encourage small talk, how to talk to decision-makers and how to build and maintain professional contacts.
During the workshop participants work in pairs, small groups aswell as in plenum to maximize learning eects.
