Family Recovery 2014
The aim of the conference is to gain an International and Scottish perspective on family re-
covery. The speakers will touch on various experiences and programmes involving families
and recovery. We hope attendees will recognise the importance of families in recovery and
the part they can play in the recovery journey. Families can and do recover.
Richard Velleman is Emeritus Professor of Mental Health Research at the University of
Bath. He is a leading authority on substance misuse, with a special interest in the impact of
this misuse on other family members, including children. He is a leading member of the Al-
cohol, Drugs and the Family research network, and a member of the 15-person Scientific
Committee of the EMCDDA (European Monitoring Centre on Drugs and Drug Addiction).
For every person who has a problem with substance misuse, there are at least three other
people who are affected, including parents, partners, children, and others. Reaching, en-
gaging, and helping those affected by another’s addiction can be a challenge. This presenta-
tion will begin with an overview of how others are affected, followed by a discussion of ap-
proaches and terms that may not be helpful, and others that are more likely to be benefi-
cial.
Jan Ligon, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Social Work at Georgia State University, Atlanta,
USA. Since the death of his son to drugs in 2003, he has published and presented at confer-
ences about working with families and significant others who are affected by substance
misuse. In addition to conferences across the U.S., he has presented in Belfast, Dublin, Lon-
don, Edinburgh, and Timișoara, Romania.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder
A free event for Educational Professionals on 16 June 2014 at Royal College of Physicians, 9
Queen Street, Edinburgh EH2 1JQ
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is the leading known preventable cause of perma-
nent learning disability worldwide and is caused by maternal use of alcohol during preg-

way to be sure that the baby will not be affected by FASD. Affected children can have a
wide range of physical, growth and neurobehavioural problems which impact on their eve-
ryday lives and limit their independence. Often teachers are the first professional to notice
a child has difficulties.
The events keynote speaker is Jo Egerton, Schools Research Consultant & Educational
Writer, who has a teaching background and a wealth of practical experience to share on
• The impact of FASD on learning
• Helpful teaching and learning strategies
• Supporting social skills
• Promoting mental health and wellbeing
• Encouraging positive behaviour

NESCPC
The NESCPC has a commitment to deliver high quality, multi-agency training for all pro-
fessionals working with children and young people and their families. We continue to de-
liver training in response to a clearly identified need, and although each of our training
sessions has a different area of focus, all relate directly to INTER-AGENCY Child Protection
work and are a means of continually improving practice.
All of our courses reflect and reference National Guidelines & Policy, the NESCPC Child
Protection Guidelines and other NESCPC inter-agency practice documents, protocols and
frameworks. Training is continually reviewed and amended to take account of national
changes and local need.
It is important that there is a mix of professionals from agencies present at training and
events should have at least 2 agencies represented so training is delivered effectively –
any course which comprises solely of applicants from 1 agency (or fails to attract the
minimum number of participants to make the course viable to run) may be postponed or
cancelled.
If you have training needs relating to Protecting Children that are not being met then let
us know. You will find our contact details at the end of the calendar.
All of the training provided by the NESCPC is FREE OF CHARGE for those attending, how-
ever as the calendar is funded by each of the partner organisations there is a hidden cost
to the delivery of the training. Please consider this when applying for a place on any
training course.
