    Breath, the Elements and Healing

Beloved Lord, Almighty God,through the rays of the sun, through the waves of the air,

through the all pervading life in space, purify and revivify me and I pray, heal my body, heart and soul.

    Amen

In the teachings of Pir o Murshid Inayat Khan, the elements and the

breath of the elements is given precedence. He says:

The twenty breaths of purification is a kind of air ablution whichprepares every person going through the spiritual path for every activitywhich s/he is going to take in daily life, and as necessary as one'severyday ablution. And by this I can promise you, that if you will keep upthe prescription of purification regularly and steadfastly, it will become asa guarantee of your health. Besides this it prepares to keep your intuitionfactor clear, so as to think rightly and to act rightly. Therefore spirituallyand physically both, it is the most valuable prescription for you to keepup.

In order to be a healer one must allow ones body, emotions, mind, heartand soul to increase in magnetism/life/light until they overflow. It is thenatural overflowing of what Murshid called the love stream or what onemight call a healing presence, that makes the healer capable.

Pir Zia offered correspondences of the breath and the elements in a tablein his booklet The Holy Mysteries of the Five Elements. Thesecorrespondences are from Murshids teaching on Metaphysics. In the

following practice we will work with these correspondences.

Breathe in the nose and out the nose in a natural rhythm.Feel your feet.

Breathe inallowing the flow of breath to come up from the center of the

earth, bringing new life into your being, healing the skin (feel yourfingers and the sense of touch heightened), strengthening andrevitalizing the bones, transforming the places of fear.

Breathe outfeeling the feet, feeling the flow, letting go of that which isready to go to the earth, feeling strength, steadiness, revitalized motion.

Breathe in the nose and out the mouth in a natural rhythm.

Breathe infeeling the top of your head, your thinking and your heart.

Breathe outfeeling the flow through your taste, your flesh, your kidneysand bladder.

Breathe in the mouth and out the nose in a natural rhythm.

Breathe infeeling the blood, the sense of smell and the feeling in thecenter of the body. Dont try to make that feeling anything specific.Allow whatever is there to be held in fire and light.

Breathe outfeeling the heart. Let yourself realize that somehow this isalso affecting the memory.

Breathe in and out the mouth in a natural rhythm.

Breathe infeeling the skin, the appetite, the attitude.

Breathe outallowing light and joy to transform your inner space.

Breathe in and out allowing the breath to breathe itself, a veryfine/subtle breath.

Breathe inbeing aware of your sight, your hair, the passion of your soul.

Breathe outallowing peace to emerge into your life.

Now assess how do you feel - what is happening in your mind, yourheart, your feelings, your soul your spirit, your body.

    Feel your feet.

Finish with the prayer Nayaz (at top of page).
