Introduction to the Duckworth Family History ~

The Saxon Chronicle, compiled by monks in the 10th century , now reposes in the British Museum. It is a history of the Saxon settlement in England.

History researchers have examined reproductions of such ancient manuscripts as the Doomsday Book (1086), the Regman Rolls (1291-1296~ the Curia Regis Rolls, the Pipe Rolls, the Hearth Rolls, parish registers, baptismal records, and tax records. Historians found the first record of the name Duckworth in Cambridgeshire where the records had been stored from early times.

The name, Duckworth, occurred in many records, manuscripts, and documents throughout the centuries. The name Duckworth was spelled many different ways. From time to time the surname was spelled Duckworth, Dukeward, Duckword, Duckwort, Duckwart, Dickward, and Dickwort. These variations in spelling frequently occurred even between father and son. .Scribes and church officials frequently spelled the name phonetically. As a result the same persons name would be recorded differently on birth, baptismal, marriage, and death certificates.

..The Saxon race gave birth to many English surnames, not the least of which was the surname Duckworth. The Saxons, invited into England by the ancient Britons of the 4th century, were a fair-skinned people. Their home was in the Rhine valley. They were led by two brothers, Commanders Hengist and Norsa. The Saxons settled in the county of Kent, in "-" southern England. During the next four hundred years, they forced the ancient Britons back into Wales and Cornwall in the west and Cumberland in the north. The Angles occupied the eastern coast; the south folk occupied Suffolk; and the north folk occupied Norfolk. Under Saxon rule, England prospered under a series of High Kings, the last of which was Harold.

In 1066, the Normans invaded from France and were victorious in the Battle of Hastings. In 1070, Duke William took an army of 40,000 north and wasted the northern counties, forcing many rebellious Norman nobles and Saxons to flee over the border into Scotland. The Saxons who remained in the south were not treated well under hostile Norman rule, and many also moved northward .

One of the earliest records of a Duckworth in America was John Duckworth, under a four-year indenture, was one of 23 persons "imported into this province .... Registered in the Secretary's books of Records," 1 December 1684, upon the account of Wm Dockwra" (Archives of .... New Jersey, first series, v.21, p. 61). William Dockwra (Dockray, Docwrae) was a London merchant and one of the proprietors of East Jersey.

Elizabeth died I Feb 1854, son of Elikiam Hamlin and Ann Reagan, he may have been born it Tennessee. He was a saddler by trade in early life, but farmed in his later life. James died 22 Dec 1922, Springfield, MO, buried December 1922, religion: Baptist. He received a good common school education, and began farming in 1849. He later graduated in vocal music from the Normal Musical School in Lima, SC. In April 1861, he joined Co. F, I st South Carolina Cavalry as seargent under Gen. Hampton; promoted to chaplin of Black's Battalion and served to the end of the war. In 1869 he moved his family to Crawford County, MO where he was a farmer and minister. In 1870 he owned 80 acres but later owned 240 acres, a house and 2 lots in Bourbon, MO. He was pastor of the First Baptist Church of Sullivan, MO and the First Baptist Church

of Cuba, MO. He was a Freemason and a staunch Democrat, though he had no political ambitions. He lived to age 94 years, 6 months. Mary: daughter of Rev. Jonathan and Mary King.
