The “story” theme arises out of how we make sense of our lives, noticing patterns, movements, tension, drama, and resolution. We are story-tellers, and yearn to have a story that not only “makes sense” out of what happens to us, but we notice that it works the other way around: the story that we “step into” or adopt also informs and guides what we choose to do. I look forward to reflecting on that with you in the coming weeks. If you missed worship on February 9, or have not had a chance to talk with me since the news of our move was announced, let me summarize my “elevator speech” about that. I have appreciated the opportu- nity to serve God among you in the role of pastor for the eleven years I have been appointed here. At a certain point, it is helpful for any organization to have the fresh perspective and different skill and aptitude set that comes with a different leader. I believe that that is the case for this church now, and am choosing to leave. Tenure in a place is like the length of a ser- mon: “It is better to leave them wanting more rather than wishing for less.” We have a lot of great minis- tries, a talented staff, energy and momentum in a number of areas, and can see on the near horizon the pay off of our mortgage. This feels like a good time to “hand off the baton.” What will I be doing? At this point, I do not know, other than that I feel led to step out of the role of pas- tor for a while. I have been a “professional Christian” for 29 years, and sense in my spirit that it is time to do more listening to than talking about God. There are a lot of things I like doing, and so before I retire I’d like to explore some other ways of using my few stubborn ounces of energy. Perhaps I’ll return to pastoring a church again, or some other formal ministry, but I will let the story unfold! I do know the “where” of the next step: Kalamazoo. A few years ago we bought a house there, and this will give me a chance to help my parents in their later years. An Open Invitation to Enter into the Life of this Church

If you or someone you know

has been attending Church of

the Dunes but not yet taken the

next step of commitment as an

intentional disciple, we would

like to invite you to join us on

Sunday, March 9, at 9:30 a.m.

in the Ryder Lounge for the

“Front Porch” inquirer’s session.

Following this first “Front Porch”

session, we will begin a series

of classes to help those in dis-

cernment take “the next step.”

Beginning Sunday, March 16,

from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.,

and continuing each week

(except Easter) through April

27, we will explore together a

United Methodist curriculum en-

titled, “A Disciple’s Path.” All

classes will be held in the Ryder

Lounge. Child care provided if

needed. Please RSVP with Pas-

tor Dan (the church office is

842-7980) or

[email protected].

Weaving our prayers together7. The Visual Arts Committee is planning another collaborative art project for Lent. We know the power of prayer, and prayers shared are even more powerful. So you’ll be weaving together prayers and Bible verses that are meaningful to you.

We’ll start with a lesson during the Creativity, the Arts and God class on Tuesday, March 4. All who are interested are welcome to come see how we’re doing it. If you’re coming to the Ash Wednesday Service you’ll see the start and after the service have an opportunity to add to it if you like. During Lent the weaving will be in the Wiltse Center for Coffee Fellow-ship on Sundays so everyone will have a chance to add to the weaving.

UMW Plans Annual Lenten Breakfast The United Methodist Women (UMW) are planning their annual Lenten Breakfast on Ash Wednesday, March 5 in the Wiltse Center, immediately following a Service of the Imposition of Ashes at 8:30 a.m. in the Sanctuary. The service will be led by Pastor Dan. This breakfast is open to everyone in the congregation and is a wonderful way to begin the Lenten season. A reservation form will be available in the church bulletin, the church office, or from the Welcome Center in the Narthex. Please make your reservation, if possible, by Sunday March 2. However, you are still welcome to attend if you find you are available at the last minute.

Little Hands, Big Hearts: Making a Difference By Laura Burns, Director of Children’s Ministries

As we studied the stories of Jesus’ ministry, the children really wanted to embrace the life Jesus models for us: reaching out to others, helping, and seeing the world in a new way. In mid January we heard the story of Jesus talking to people no one else would talk to, which germinated the idea of how we could do the same. Our children came up with the idea to make Valentines for those who might not get any. Over the next three weeks they poured their love and creativity into over thirty handmade valentines. It was beautiful to see what is in their hearts manifest into tangible acts of love. Let us all ask our-selves, how do my actions reflect the teachings of Jesus? What can I do with my own two hands?

Wooden Tables Needed for the Youth The youth are in need of four wooden (no laminated tops) tables with four legs. The tables may be round or square with a table top size ranging from 36"-48". We do NOT need chairs. Call Ashley at 231/670-6813 or 616/842-7980 or e-mail [email protected] to make arrangements for drop-off, pick-up or with any questions you may have.

March Adult Small Groups Come Alive Through Fellowship By: Pam Mettler, Director of Adult, Volunteer & Website Ministries

MONDAY EVENING BOOK GROUP

A discussion of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression Into Opportunity for Women Worldwide, by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Nicholas Kristof & Sheryl WuDunn is the featured book for discussion on March 24 at 6:30 p.m. in Ryder Lounge. A Harvard Magazine online book reviewer (at www.harvardmagazine.com) describes this book as: “A series of essays and anecdotes that work to-gether (to) form an argument in two parts. The first part argues that the oppression of women in de-veloping countries is a devastating and under-recognized injustice that’s the equivalent of slavery, and that demands a moral and political movement as focused and principled as the campaign against slavery to bring it to an end. The second discusses practical ways to create this movement and effect

the change that’s needed.”

BACK TO THE BEGINNING

ABC-TV’s sweeping documentary entitled “Back to the Beginning” is being viewed and discussed in several DVD segments during the 9:30 a.m. Sunday morning study. Join facilitator Ruth Woodward in Rooms 13/14 to view beautiful and majes-tic scenes from around the Holy Land. This encompassing series features travel down the Nile to witness the birthplace of Moses, scenes from inside the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the pyramids of Giza, the building of a modern day “ark” and more. This “ultimate road trip” explores the fundamental roots of Christianity, Islam

and Judaism, providing a backbone for understanding some core values from among many people around the world. Everyone is welcome to join this study, featuring CNN correspondent Christianne Amanpour. Fill up a cup of coffee, drop into for discussion, sit back and relax as you gain insights into Biblical culture, sites and people. Got questions? Contact Ruth Woodward at: [email protected]

RAY VANDER LAAN HOUR Renowned teacher and historian Ray VanderLaan guides participants through the lands of the Bible each week in this well-known DVD study. Discover the historical, geographical and cultural context of the sacred Scriptures in light of the times they were written. Those in the group learn that the powerful lessons from the past can impact how we live faithfully today. DVD’s featured were filmed on location through-out the Middle East. Feel the power of transformation as you watch and expand your understanding of God. Facilitators are Gwen and John Bartels. Class sessions are Sundays, from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in Rooms 13/14.

PARENTING DISCUSSION GROUP

Empowerment helps us balance our time with children against the pull of jobs, family obli-gations, friendships, checking, Facebook and Twitter accounts. More and more, we find ourselves needing more “me time” to process the life changes, ages and stages that occur with each birthday year. For practical tips on parenting with empowerment, we invite you to join this informal “drop-in” group. There is no homework, just sharing ideas with parents of all ages. Recent discussions focus on late adolescents and the differences between boys 13 to 17 and girls 15 to 19. Join facilitator Val Martin on Sundays at the same time as “Children in Worship,” from 11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. in the Wiltse Center.

“GOD AT 2000” BY: Marcus Borg

March 2 – April 27, 2014/ 11:30 a.m., Library Facilitators: Jill Miller & Mary Duncan “How do your personal experiences, your study, and your faith perspective influence the way you, as an individual, see God?” This question was posed to seven renowned authors and scholars from varying faith perspec-tives, including: Karen Armstrong, Diana Eck, Seyyed Hossein Nasr, Joan Chittister, Lawrence Kushner, Desmond Tutu, and Marcus Borg.

God at 2000 explores the ways in which these authors’ life experiences have shaped their personal understanding of God. Insights were originally given as lectures at the “God at 2000” conference in February 2000.

NEW SUNDAY MORNING BOOK DISCUSSION

United Methodist Church of the Dunes March 2014

Youth Update By Ashley Boersma, Director of Youth Ministries

Wow! What a great February! Sunday School, Youth Group, and Small Group have been going just great! We have had many wonderful discussions, yummy snacks, and fun games. February was such a busy month for us. We had so much going on!

On February 2nd we held a half-time Super Bowl party. It was great fun! We had a taco bar for dinner, played pool, darts, bumper pool, and joined in great conversations, all while keeping an eye on the football game.

We had our All American Picnic Fundraiser lunch on the 16th and it was such an amazing success. Thank you to everyone who came out and supported our youth. The students worked very hard on Saturday and Sunday to make sure everything was ready for our fundraiser. We had a lot of fun in the kitchen cooking and preparing the tables for Sunday. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped to make sure everything went smoothly. We couldn’t have done it without you.

We are getting very excited to go on our mission trip to Washington D.C. in June 2014. February 23rd was Youth Sunday. We had a guest preacher, Rev. David Gladstone, from Lake Louise church

camp.

At the end of February the Sr. High youth headed up to the barn house for a skiing/snowboarding weekend!
