The One-On-One COaChing SySTem® (a trademarked system designed by Daniel Harkavy of
BuildingChampions.com) provides a personal coaching experience that transforms life and leadership.
We believe one-on-one coaching is the optimum relationship for life transformation. It’s a growth
experience that…
• challenges you.
• assists in building the character of Christ in your life.
• encourages you to become the best person possible.
• equips you to exemplify personal and professional excellence.
The real question is not whether we believe one-on-one coaching is the optimum environment
for change—but do you believe it? And do you believe you can achieve what’s described above?
Transforming Life and Leadership
The One - On - One Coaching Sys tem®
vii i
Here’s our guarantee: If you fully engage in your coaching, giving your best effort to
complete your Action Plans, you’ll discover new levels of strength, excellence, competency,
and performance that you’ve never before achieved.
Not only is one-on-one coaching effective on a personal
level, it’s also highly effective in organizational growth
through the development of sustainable Discipleship
Coaching Cultures.
The Core Four® was originally developed by Daniel
Harkavy of Building Champions (www.buildingcham-
pions.com.). For more detailed information please see
BecomingaCoachingLeader by Daniel Harkavy, available
through www.amazon.com or your local bookstore. This
version of Core Four® 5.0 has been developed exclusively
for Ministry Leaders.
The Core Four® is the coaching curriculum of the
One-on-One Coaching System® that addresses all areas of life and leadership. When people
use it daily, they’re able to achieve their desired lifestyle and excel in leadership.
The Coaching ProcessThe role of a coach is critical to the success of coaching. A coach guides a person from where
they are to achieving the results they desire. The coach ensures action plans are created and
completed. Coaches deliver a transformational coaching experience.

Transformational coaching is characterized by these three elements:
1. Clarity. Coaches help people clarify their perspective and purpose so they can
formulate proper priorities preparing them for change.
2. Challenge. Coaches ensure people practice their priorities and achieve
desired outcomes.
3. Care. Coaches provide ongoing care and encouragement as people move forward
in their growth process.
As important as the coach is in the coaching process, the person being coached has the critical
role to play. They must fully engage in the coaching process giving their best to their personal
growth and the completion of their Action Plans.
The One-on-One Coaching system incorporates an initial two-hour coaching session
followed by two 30-minute phone sessions each month. The Core Four® provides the coaching
curriculum and tools.

As followers of Jesus we’ve been given a Great Commandment—to love God with all our being
and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39). We’ve also received a Great Commis-
sion—to “make disciples” (Matthew 28:19-20).
Jesus accomplished these objectives not only through teaching, but through close, personal re-
lationships with people around him. He directed them in their discipleship to make the necessary
decisions and take the necessary actions for honoring God in their lives. Similarly, the coaching ex-
perience provides an intentional relationship around all that God intends for us to become and do.

Two coaching programs are available in Certification:
1. LeadershipCoaching utilizes the Core Four®. This is recommended for staff and
lay leaders who oversee other leaders.
2. DiscipleshipCoaching utilizes the Life Plan of the Core Four®. This is
recommended for lay leaders and congregation members.
Coaching CultureChristian Leaders desire more than personal growth and professional development. They want
assistance in developing their staff, lay leaders, and congregation members.
Ministry Coaching International has developed a Discipleship Coaching Culture process that
has proven highly effective in advancing leadership skills and achieving biblical alignment in all
areas of a person’s life and leadership. Here’s how Ministry Coaching International builds sustain-
able Discipleship Coaching Cultures within churches and parachurch organizations:
1. A Primary Leader (senior pastor, director, or designated lay leader) is coached to
advance their health and effectiveness utilizing the One-on-One Coaching Sys-
tem®. In the course of coaching, the Primary Leader develops a vision to launch
and build a sustainable Discipleship Coaching Culture within their organization
to provide coaching for staff, lay leaders, congregation members, and marketplace
people (as an outreach process).

2. The Primary Leader completes certification and embarks in coaching his or her key
staff, encouraging them to pursue certification and replicate the coaching experi-
ence to their lay leaders and congregation members.
In our experience, a three-to-five-year commitment is required to build a sustainable Disci-
pleship Coaching Culture.

Jesus came to give us an abundant life. He said; “The thief comes only to steal and kill
and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10).
An abundant life begins with Jesus. By grace through faith in Jesus Christ, an abundant life
is born. Our sins are forgiven, and we become a new creation with the incredible opportunity to
build a totally different and amazing life. But how do we build it?
What happens after salvation? What’s our course of action for shaping and living out this abun-
dant life that Jesus sacrificed to purchase for us?
The apostle Paul gives us insight into what we need to do after receiving the amazing
gift of salvation:
Therefore my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more
in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you,
both to will and to work for his good pleasure. (Philippians 2:12-13)
Life Plan:Design and Live an Abundant Life
Paul shows us that salvation is just the beginning of God’s work in our life. God desires for us to
partner with him in “working out” our salvation in everyday life. As God “works in you” his character
and truth, your life becomes more and more abundant. It possesses greater and greater obedience and
accomplishes his will “for his good pleasure.”
That’s what Life Planning is all about. It cooperates with the work God is doing in your
life and leadership.
Life MissionLife Planning is learning to live the abundant life
Jesus Christ gave to us. Life Planning leads to
living abundantly in our faith, priorities, health,
family, friends, finances, and service. It’s a pow-
erful process assisted by the Holy Spirit who em-
powers us to live our life mission of being “con-
formed to the image of his Son” (Romans 8:29)
and achieving the “good works, which God pre-
pared beforehand, that we should walk in them”
(Ephesians 2:10).

Phase 1: assessment
The purpose of Assessment is to awaken us to our current reality. Assessment helps us clearly see
the current condition of an area in our life so we can determine the best course to improve it.
Phase 2: alignment
Alignment works in our perspective, purpose, and priorities. Alignment brings to light the truth
of God’s Word in our thinking, helping us determine purpose and clearly decide our most critical
priorities. You’ll accomplish alignment by reading Scripture and answering application questions
that will increase your wisdom and prepare you for accurate action.
Alignment helps us to not walk in the counsel of the wicked but rather meditate on God’s
Word so that whatever we do prospers.
Life PlanningProcess
Phase 3: action
Action achieves implementation. In this phase we complete steps of action to obtain our
desired results. Your coach provides ongoing accountability to ensure that your action steps
become a reality in your life.
This phase is critical to experience results. It’s where biblical insight and understanding meet appro-
priate action, leading to life change. To ensure the best possible outcome, carefully consider actions that
you’ll commit to achieving consistently.

A CleAr, Compelling viSion is critical to the success of your leadership. A compelling vision
communicated to key leaders will ignite excitement and commitment. “Visionary leaders attract
followers because they’re able to capture the imagination and excite people to dreams that are
possible to achieve.”11
In any organization, vision creation and communication is one of the core tasks of an effective
leader. Not only is it a critical core task but a huge challenge to achieve.
Andy Stanley understands the vision challenge: “One of the greatest challenges of leadership
is making vision stick. Vision doesn’t have much adhesive.” That’s so true! In his book Making
Vision Stick he goes on to say, “There is not a season in which a leader can push autopilot and
expect the organization to remain vision-driven.”12
So how do we solve the vision challenge? I believe there’s one paramount answer to the vision
Ministry Vision:Build and Communicate a Compelling Vision
challenge and to making vision stick. We must own it! It’s our responsibility to create a clear,
compelling vision, and to ensure that people understand it and fully embrace it. We cannot trans-
fer responsibility to others when vision doesn’t stick.
Andy Stanley goes on to say, “When a leader blames the follower for not following, the leader
has ceased to lead. If the followers don’t get it, we probably haven’t delivered the vision in a way
that makes it get-able.”
The Ministry Vision ProcessThe Ministry Vision tool is designed to help you develop a clear, compelling vision so the people
you lead get it. Ministry Vision delivers the strategies needed to create and communicate your
Ministry Vision (the Ministry Vision process utilizes Making Vision Stick by Andy Stanley).
Onsite Coaching OpportunityYou can select to have a Professional Coach travel to your location and facilitate the entire
Ministry Vision process with you and your team. Your coach provides additional training

“SimPlE iS in. COmPlExity iS Out. Ironically people are hungry for the simple because the
world has become much more complex. The amount of information accessible to us is continually
increasing. The ability to interact with the entire world is now possible.
“The result is a complicated world with complex and busy lives. And, in the midst of the
complexity, people want to find simplicity. They long for it, seek it, pay for it, even dream of it.
The simple revolution has begun.”17
Simplicity and the ChurchGrowing and vibrant churches understand simplicity. In Simple Church, Thom S. Rainer and
Eric Geiger report their comparison of more than 400 growing and vibrant churches to non-

growing and struggling churches. Church leaders from both groups were surveyed to determine
the simplicity of their church discipleship process.
They discovered that the vibrant churches were much simpler than the comparison churches.
“In general the simple churches are growing and vibrant. Churches with a simple process for
reaching and maturing people are expanding the kingdom. Church leaders who have designed
a simple biblical process to make disciples are effectively advancing the movement of the gospel.
“Conversely, complex churches are struggling and anemic. Churches without a process or with
a complicated process for making disciples are floundering. Unfortunately, the over programmed
and busy church is the norm. The simple church is the exception, yet their research shows that
should not be the case.”18
Responding to the Simple RevolutionHow do you respond to the research findings discussed in Simple Church? Here are some actions
to consider in responding to the simple revolution.
Action 1: Please read Simple Church and seek to understand the research and recommendations.
Action 2: Reexamine your Ministry Vision and consider revisions to ensure a simple disciple-
ship process is embedded in your Ministry Vision.
The Ministry Plan ProcessMinistry Planning is about seeking wisdom, determining proper action, ensuring team involve-
ment, and building a plan that moves ministry forward. Ministry Planning eliminates confusion
and mobilizes people to action. Ministry Plan is a proven process that has assisted thousands of
leaders in focusing their teams and organizations for maximum results.

IS there A better wAy? Is there a better way to get more done and still have a life?
These are excellent questions. The answer is yes if you’re willing to practice some new Priority
Management strategies.
David Allen in Getting Things Done says, “If you’re like me, you like getting things done and
doing them well. Yet, you also want to savor life in ways that seem increasingly elusive. It is
possible to be effectively doing while also delightfully being in your ordinary workaday world.”23
Priority Management is about effectively managing our personal and professional priorities. It’s
about balancing life’s demands.
Priority Management:Practice Stress-Free Productivity
The Priority Management ProcessThe Priority Management tool is designed in a learn-then-practice format to build proficient Prior-
ity Management over the next six months. Each section of the Priority Management tool will have
a suggested Practice Period for you to complete before you move onto the next section.
The idea in the Priority Management process is to learn the process recommended by David
Allen, then practice it in your daily living until it’s a habit. We encourage you to be innovative
in customizing the priority strategies as needed to ensure maximum usability. Slowing the addi-
tion of new priority strategies allows greater opportunity for behavior changes to take place and
will help you achieve greater permanence from the Priority Management process. The Priority
Management process utilizes Getting Things Done as its resource.
