SOMETIMES THE SIMPLEST THINGS IN

life can bring us the most happiness. The cold side of the pillow, finding money in your coat pocket, and snow days are only a few of the things Neil Pasricha thinks are awesome. He wants to share all of them with the world. Pasricha's blog 1000 Awesome Things is an award winning celebration of the little moments we often overlook but can brighten our days and reads "like a snappy Jerry Seinfeld monologue by way of Maria Von Trapp" (The Vancouver Sun). What started as a hobby to try and help Pasricha feel better about life is now an internet

phenomenon and has gathered over 40 million views. Pasricha's goal is to post one awesome thing every weekday for 1000 consecutive weekdays over four years. His book, The Book of Awesome is a #1 international bestseller currently being released in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Holland, India, Korea, New Zealand, the UK, and United States. 1000 Awesome Things and The Book of Awesome point out universal feel-good signposts that help us stay afloat in troubling times. Pasricha's uplifting lists serve not as fluffy distractions or placating gimmicks, but as reminders of why "life really is awesome after all" (The Guardian)

JANUARY’S BROWN BAG LUNCH Maintaining Mental

Fitness for Life Virtually everyone can develop and enhance their memory and cognitive skills as well as emotional and social intelligence - allowing us to live with greater ease, resilience and well-being, especially in stressful times. The exciting news is these are learnable skills and with practice, can actually change the physical structure of the brain.

Focus will be on practical, every day activities at work and at home that can lead to increased mental fitness, regardless of age (the younger the better) ability or life circumstances. Marilyn will give us existing resources as well as brainstorm for new ideas for university based resources. The session will be interactive with an opportunity to experiment with a few ‘mental games’. You will have access to the mental fitness life-style assessment tool.

Our speakers both work on Waterloo’s campus in Counselling Services: Marilyn Perdue, MSW Marilyn currently co-leads Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction groups for staff, faculty and students at the University of Waterloo. Marilyn graduated from the University of Waterloo in psychology, and Wilfrid Laurier University with a Masters in Clinical Social Work. She has worked at both universities for over 20 years. Dave Logan, MSW Dave currently works with students, staff and faculty members developing success strategies, personal relationships, and mental health challenges. Dave graduated from Mohawk College in Child & Youth Care, completed his undergraduate degree in Social Developmental Studies at the University of Waterloo and completed his Masters in Clinical Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier University.

habits that may hold you back, these include a) Starting sentences with “No,” “But,” or “However” or b) An excessive need to be “Me” (or, “I can’t change, that’s just how I am”). The author seeks to identify those habits and then helps the reader by identifying strategies to overcome and recover from the habits. While this book is aligned towards supervisors and managers, there is a lot of application for all people who are building relationships within the work and home environment. THE BOOKSHOP “ ” For the Winter term, OHD will be offering a “Bookshop” on What Got You Here Won’t Get You There: How Successful People Become Even More Successful by Marshall Goldsmith and Mark Reiter. This will be a blended program offering components of a book club and workshop. Here’s how it will work: • Participants meet three times during the term (9-12pm, Jan 24th, Feb 28th, and March 20th). • A copy of the book will be distributed the first meeting along with guided questions. • Participants READ the book on their own time (really – this is important…). • We meet two additional times to discuss content and share how ideas can be applied. • This book is for anyone who seeks to understand how they are perceived by others in your work environments and at home --and how to change for the better.

About the Book: Marshall Goldsmith’s and Mark Reiter’s What Got You Here Won’t Get You There identifies and discusses 20 workplace

The uWaterloo Cookbook project is funded by a Special Initiatives grant through the Staff Excellence Fund and the UW Recreation Committee (a group of 6 volunteer employees) will administer this project. Our goal is to bring together ideas from across campus on a topic of interest to all – FOOD. This project will culminate in a “bring your lunch to work” cookbook based on recipes submitted from staff members campus wide. It will present one new recipe for each week of the year (52) including ingredients lists, preparation and storage information as well as dietary notes. (We will have a dietitian working with us to review the recipes.)

It is our hope that this initiative will motivate staff to try new recipes, to promote conversation with their colleagues (about recipes they have tried and variations they tested), to make and bring their lunches more frequently thereby saving money and eating healthier and to introduce others to alternate ingredients or unique food combinations.

The contents of the cookbook itself will include a brief tidbit about each contributor (their name, where they work on campus, their favourite U of W memory and their favourite place to eat on or near campus) which will serve as a stepping stone in achieving the “getting-to–know-one-another” mandate of the UWRC. Successful contributors will be announced using the UWRC mailing list, through a posting on the Daily Bulletin and on the UWRC web page. The final culminating event will be the Cookbook launch to be held in the early spring.
