How the Tour Inspired Me to Pursue My Dream

What is my definition of a dream? A dream is something a person longs to achieve and attain by any means necessary. From the time I was in third grade, I was certain in my decision to become a lawyer. By seventh grade, I was satisfied with my determination to become a defense attorney after what seems like an endless number of years in college. I chose this distinct field because, even at a younger age, I have always evidently been committed to helping those around me. Each and every year of my academic career, I have become more mesmerized with my dream, however nothing really prompted me to want to actually pursue my dream. Thankful-ly, the week of March 25th through March 29th, 2018 changed that for me. During the college tour, we visited nine reputable historically Black colleges or universi-ties. Each unique college was embedded with its own rich history and interesting campus. As soon as I was aware of the college tour, I was extremely excited that we would be touring Spelman College because it has always been my dream school. I was able to learn that Spelman has a notable law program, in addition to North Carolina A&T University and Clark-Atlanta University. Also, I was given the opportunity to speak to college admission counselors and dig deeper into college acceptance and offered college courses. I can state that the tour has encour-aged me to pursue my dream career because I acquired information regarding my career path and different opportunities that may be at my disposal during and after college. Another opportunity the college tour gave me was communicating with real college stu-dents. Colleges could be seen from the outside as being prestigious and high-ranking, however I believe the actual college students have the final say in how college life truly is for them. At each of the nine colleges, I was able to personally speak with college students who lived on campus and learn more about the school and different events the school has to offer. Luckily, I spoke with several college students who currently major in my ideal major, which is criminal justice. I learned what to expect from each school and their criminal justice major, which will be truly helpful during my final college selection process. Meeting current college students has inspired me to chase my dream because I listened to their campus and college stories, motivating me to push forward and delve into my established goals. Moreover, the most important part of the tour that inspired me to pursue my dream was learning at each college or university that building connections is an essential part of college and everything that happens after it. Interacting and creating friendships with people along the tour has taught me that the anonymous quote, “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know”, is an evident factor in today’s society. I have exchanged information with some of the college students I have met during the tour and they have been extremely helpful with giving me advice about almost everything during my last years in high school. In addition to that, I have still kept communication with the roommates that I have met during the tour. Founding connections during the tour has inspired me to want to go to college and pursue my dream because it has given me a sense of what college would be like in the future. From March 25th to March 29th, I had the incredible opportunity to visit nine amazing colleges and universities. This college tour has inspired me in an ample amount of ways to continue the pursuit of my career choice. Hearing different stories and experiences from students on campus has broadened my horizons regarding college and what to expect. As a result of the college tour, I am inspired to pursue my career dreams through college.
