What is the significance of

the poppy?

Learning Opportunity Learning Intention/Success Criteria

Learners explore and discover how a poppy is constructed.

Through observation and discussion, learners examine the different parts for colour, texture, transparency, etc. Learners can then re-create flowers choosing from a range of materials.

Finished work can be mounted, framed and displayed as part of an art exhibition then auctioned to raise funds for Poppyscotland.

Finished work becomes part of a collage. Learners decide where they would like the collage to be displayed and then arrange their poppies to build the collage.

Learning Opportunity Learning Intention/Success Criteria

Learners design and create a new product for Poppyscotland, e.g. jewellery, wrapping paper, t-shirts, cards, bookmarks, calendars (showing local people and places) etc.

Design and create Remembrance cards. Using outdoors as a stimulus for learning, create a sense poem to be included in their card.

Design and create a new flag, representing Peace, which could be flown at all Remembrance Parades throughout Scotland.

Learning Opportunity Learning Intention/Success Criteria

Learners prepare the soil for planting seeds and discuss what the plant will need to grow and where the seeds should be positioned to help with this process.

Learners record the growth of their poppy using a range of methods, e.g. use of digital camera, drawing.

Learning Opportunity Learning Intention/Success Criteria

Learners adopt a role during a ‘Poppy Tea’ for those who live locally and/or those who may have been affected by conflicts. This will provide opportunities to display work about Poppyscotland, sell products and refreshments and entertain.
