Dear Reader,

Welcome to the Early Spring Edition of Your Local Journal. It may not

seem like it with our recent weather, but Spring really is only just

around the corner. The mornings are getting lighter and the evenings

are getting just that little bit longer. The first snowdrops are popping up

in our park and I’ve spotted a lovely cluster of yellow crocuses too! I

wish the same could be said of my own garden but with two cats and

Daisy dog marauding around, it has become rather untidy!

I’m sure you will agree that the picture on the front cover is adorable!

We have a great article about National Pet Month (page 6) which is an

annual event promoting responsible pet ownership and to make the

public aware of the benefits of pets and the contribution they make to

our society. I know first hand how positively life changing owning a pet

can be and how much we need to look after them too. You can read all

about the event and how to get involved in the fun and perhaps even

organise an event of your own!

Another interesting feature this month is all about Waterloo Seafront

Gardens. Local group “The Friends of Waterloo Seafront Gardens” are

currently conducting a major consultation exercise in order to gather

ideas for a Heritage Lottery Fund bid and they want your help. They

would like you to share your memories of the gardens over the last 80

years! You can read all about it on Page 8 and find out why this could

be invaluable to the group and the future of the area.

Lois on the Allotment makes a return in this edition and after being out

of action for several months it sounds like she has a lot to do! You can

catch up with her on Page 20. Welcome back Lois!

And finally to our local “Bump-A-Thon”! Local face and body painter

Beccie Baxendale will be teaming up with other professionals and

painting as many pregnant ladies tummies 'bumps' as they can on Red

Nose Day in March for Comic Relief. The event is known as the

“National Bump-A-Thon” but Beccie and her team will be bringing the

Bump-A-Thon to Waterloo! Everyone is welcome to get involved either

as a “bump” or a painter and of course non-bumps and non-painters

are more than welcome! Find out how to get involved on Page 27.

So that’s about all from me, please don’t forget to let me know about

any events you may have planned over the next few months. You can

call me on 07531 156758 or e-mail [email protected] and as

always, please don’t forget to mention the Journal when

contacting anyone featured as without our advertisers

there wouldn’t be a Journal. Happy Reading!

Pets can play a key role in a person’s life, providingcompanionship, affection and even protection.Children who keep a pet get the opportunity tolearn how to love, care about and be responsiblefor another living creature. Caring for their pethelps in the development of self discipline. They say that a dog is a man’s best friend and neveris this truer than in the case of working andassistance companion animals. Chosen for theirsocial nature, dogs work closely with people in avariety of roles including law enforcement, searchand rescue, and farming. As assistance animals, dogs provide help for the visually and hearingimpaired, serve as an alert system for impendingseizures, and offer additional strength and mobilityfor the physically disabled. Dogs also providecomfort for some people suffering emotionaldifficulties. As a child I remember the Blue Peter team showingme and thousands of others how to prepare mytortoise for hibernation during the winter months.Nowadays there are a myriad of professionalservices available to help us care for our preciouspets. From pet sitting to microchipping, there issomebody out there who can do it all! From 1st April to 6th May it's National Pet Month, your chance to show the special creature in yourlife just how much you love them! The charityholds the event eachyear. The aim is topromote

responsible pet ownership, make the public awareof the benefits of pets and the contribution theymake to our society, as well as letting owners knowabout the pet services available to them. Each year a whole host of pet-tastic events are held, from dog shows to fairs and perfect petcompetitions! So why not get involved? At theNational Pet Month website you can find out abouteverything happening in your area, and you caneven register to put on an event of your own!You can also find out more about the great work ofthe charity at the site and make a donation orbecome a sponsor. All the money goes towardsbringing together animal welfare charities, petbusinesses, youth groups and simply pet owners, toimprove the welfare of pets. Last year’s campaignraised around £12,000 for local charities.

Of course, two of the main ways we can keep ourfurry friends healthy, happy and safe is by gettingthem regularly vaccinated against infectiousdiseases and having them microchipped. UseNational Pet Month as a reminder to make sure youdo both of these. Many diseases are now thankfullyvery rare, but if an animal does catch one, they canbe difficult and expensive to cure, or even fatal. Some can also be transmitted to humans. Your vetwill give you a card to record when vaccinations aregiven. Going to the vet on a regular basis, alsomeans that they can keep an eye on your pet’sgeneral health and spot any potential problemsearly on. Remember – prevention is better thancure!

Perhaps you had your first kiss there? Or took yourchild for their first steps. You might remember theweather, the person you were with, theconversation you had and the flavour of the icecream you ate. The Friends of Waterloo Seafront Gardens arecurrently conducting a major consultation exercisein order to gather ideas for a Heritage Lottery Fundbid of £100,000 and want your help. The friends group has been in existence for over 3years now, and has gone from strength to strength. The work they have done together with pupils fromCrosby High School to renew the fantastic rockery inMarine Gardens is a great example of what hasalready been achieved.Volunteers and pupils have spent hours strippingback turf and soil that had over the years buried

virtually all the rocks. With the help of SeftonCouncil lots of planting has taken place and thevolunteers are now responsible for the regularmaintenance of this particular part of the park.Last year the group completed another excitingproject. This time with the involvement of MerseyFire Brigade, Olsen House school and SeftonCouncil, the pond in Marine Crescent Gardens wascompletely cleaned out repainted and a whole newrockery created on the island plinth, which was, until 1984, adorned with Thetis the goddess of war. Most importantly The Friends group have been verycommitted to their monthly “litter pick”. NickThompson founder of the group said, “We have being doing our monthly litter pick forover three years and have had more than 50 peoplecome and help us over that time with a hardcore ofaround 10! We have proved that volunteers can bereally very effective. Helping in the gardens has leadon to people seeing how lovely they are and hasgiven them a real passion for wanting to dosomething about bringing the gardens back to theirformer glory. There are many people who live nearthe gardens that don’t have a garden themselves sothis is an ideal way to help and encourage them togarden here. People coming together and creatingchange”.With the resident Iron Men down on the beachmany people regularly walk past the gardens tryingto find them. Restoring them to their original

beauty would go a long way in helping the localarea to become a more recognised touristattraction. With the fabulous Lakeside Centre andthe beach so close by, the potential for this area ishuge. Nick continues, “We are only just scratching the surface, big moneyis needed to really make a difference. The Lotterybid is our first starting point. The grant is tied tolocal heritage and history so we must engage asmany people as we can to show that people areinterested and that we are a strong organisation, which hopefully will lead on to going for a muchbigger grant in the future. Although most people between the ages of 17 and65 can become blood donors, only 4% give blood, generally each donating two or three times a year.It is usually recommended that women leave 16weeks and men 12 weeks between donations.Regular donors can continue to donate as long asthey are in good health. The generosity of ourdonors has enabled many people to be alive todaywho wouldn’t otherwise be here.During the winter, blood banks tend to runextremely low as more blood is needed and theproblem is compounded by regular donors beingstruck down with colds and influenza. Could youbecome a donor? The actual donation takes 5-10minutes and the whole visit will usually be donewithin 30 minutes. There is little discomfort; youmay feel slightly light-headed afterwards but thiscan be minimised by eating a low-fat mealbeforehand. After donation you will be encouragedto remain seated and have some refreshments.

Not everyone can donate blood; this is to preventrisk to the health of the donor or the recipient. Youcannot donate if you have received blood duringthe course of a medical treatment or proceduresince 1st Jan 1980; weigh under 110lbs; have hadhepatitis or jaundice in the last 12 months; have anactive cold sore, chesty cough or sore throat; havetaken antibiotics within the last 7 days; have had atattoo, semi permanent make-up or any skinpiercing cosmetic treatment during the last 4months; have had acupuncture within the last 4months unless this was done within the NHS or by aqualified Healthcare Professional registered with astatutory body; a member of your family hassuffered with CJD; have ever received human pituitary extract; are pregnant or have had a babyin the last 6 months; have visited a part of theworld where malaria is common in the last sixmonths. After a long cold winter, I for one will beembracing the exciting new spring fashion trendsand I’m longing for some warmer weather to makethe most of them!Bold graphic prints will be popular this season:symmetrical swirls or squares worn with minimalaccessories really hit the spot. Daredevils can matchtheir prints with clashing ones. Prefer to lookdemure and sophisticated? The pencil is back, either as a skirt or dress, and looks great withclashing colourways and patterns. For a softer spring look, choose gorgeous iridescentfabrics. At night match them with more sheen orsolid colour; by day they look great worn withneutrals. Fluorescents are also big news – neon, punchy pink, acid lemon; bright jeans look fabulousteamed with a sheer blouse. White is ever popular, worn as layers to create a fluid silhouette or justworn as separates if you prefer to keep it crisp andclean. And candy stripes will be everywhere thisseason – horizontal, vertical or diagonal, not just inblack and white but with cherry, grass green andnavy thrown into the mix. The bomber jacket is back, curved around theshoulders with plenty of volume or worn croppedand chic. Bermuda shorts return: easy to wear atany age, slouchy and cool. Also bang on trend aresporty dresses, shorts suits and luxe leather. 90’s nostalgia brings back grunge with a shiny twist;simple slip dresses, baggy jeans and high waistedtrousers – you’ll either love or hate the revival! Orhow about a nod to the 60’s with high hemmedshift dresses in funky prints and Broderie Anglaiseor appliquéd daisies?Footwear follows similar trends; strong prints, iridescence, embroidered detail and embellishedmesh. Complete your spring look with zanysunglasses (any size, shape and colour goes, thewilder the better!) and Perspex accessories. This isnot a spring for the faint-hearted! Enjoy the fun offashion...Sarah Hughes

If your radiators feelcold at the top andwarm at the bottom, itis likely that air istrapped inside them – acommon problem thatcan be fixed quite easilyby bleeding them.First, determine which radiators are affected. Switchyour central heating on, and then check that eachradiator is heated uniformly. Any with cold spotswill need bleeding. Before bleeding, turn off thecentral heating to prevent more air entering thesystem. Bleed the radiator by inserting a bleed key (suppliedwith your radiator and available at DIY stores) in thebleed valve at the top of the radiator, whilst holdinga cloth or small bowl underneath to catch anyleaking water. With your hand wrapped in a clothfor protection, slowly turn the key anticlockwiseuntil a hissing sound occurs. This is the trapped airescaping. Once the hissing stops and water starts todrip out (usually after a few seconds), close thevalve back up. Repeat this process for all affected radiators. Turnthe central heating back on once finished, andcheck your radiators after a couple of hours toensure they have a uniform temperature, and thatno water is leaking from the bleed valve. Do this once a year to keep your central heating intip-top condition. Debbie Singh-Bhatti

Sudoku

How to play Sudoku It’s simple! Fill in the grid so that each row, column and 3x3 box, contains the numbers 1 through to 9 with no repetition. You don’t need to be a genius. These puzzles use logic alone. Watch out! Sudoku is highly addictive.

aving seen the adverts for the GT86where a virtual man drives a virtualcar and escapes from a virtual worldinto reality, I was expecting some rip-snorting hi tech machine along the

lines of a Nissan Skyline, the kind of car that mightappear in the latest incarnation of The Fast andthe Furious. But actually it is not like that; it isToyota’s idea of a back to basics sports coupe withthe emphasis on driving pleasure, rather thanperformance derived from power and technology. It certainly looks the part with its curving roofline, muscular wheel arches and super stylish headlights. It isn’t quite drop dead gorgeous but it certainlyturns heads; sporty Toyotas tend to look distinctlyungainly so it’s good to see that the stylists havepushed the boat out on this one. Inside it’s adifferent story, unfortunately; thanks to the curvingroofline the back seats are as good as useless unlessyou have a small child sitting behind a short adult. As you would expect from Toyota, the fit and finishare good but many of the materials are cheap andnasty. Leather seats are a cost option and the clothon the version I drove was the kind of thing youwould expect to find on a cheap hatchback. Still, atleast the boot is a decent size and the drivingposition and ergonomics are both spot on. This car is all about the driving experience and thatis what the designers’ efforts have been focussedon. It is front engine, rear wheel drive with a limitedslip diff and near perfect 50/50 weight distribution. It is also very light, weighing in at under 1200kg.The engine is a bespoke version of Subaru’s well-proven 2.0 litre flat four, tuned to produce 197bhpand the quoted performance figures are 0-62mph in7.6 seconds with a 140mph top speed. This allsounds very impressive, but does the GT86 deliveron all that promise?

Settle yourself behind the wheel and everything isas it should be. You sit low to the ground and thecar feels like it pivots around you. The engine emitsa satisfying growl when you fire it up. When I firstdrove the GT86 it felt disappointingly gutless and Iwondered if Toyota had made up thoseperformance figures. They hadn’t; maximum poweris delivered at 7000rpm and the car only reallycomes alive as the revs build and the growl turnsinto a roar. It is well worth while working the enginehard because the handling is a revelation. Thesteering feels alive in your hands and is pinpointaccurate. You can sense what the car is doingthrough the seat; you can literally drive by the seatof your pants. The standard tyres are the sameskinny items that can be found on a Prius whichmeans that there is only a limited amount of gripbut this is a good thing; the handling is sopredictable that you can effortlessly control a slide.Turn off the ESP and you can drift the back end outlike a touring car driver. There is hardly any bodyroll and the ride is firm, but by no meansuncomfortable. The GT86 costs a very reasonable £24,995 whichmakes it a viable alternative to many hot hatchesfor a young professional who still wants to havesome fun in his (or her) car. It is by no means thefastest coupe on the roads but, for sheer drivingpleasure, there is nothing to beat it this side of aPorsche. Twenty four years ago the Japanesereinvented the affordable British roadster with theMazda MX5. Could they have just done the samething for the affordable sports coupe with ToyotaGT86?Kit JohnsonCar as tested Toyota GT86 manual £24,995 RRP

Amsterdam – that’s the place you go to onstag weekends, isn’t it? You know theroutine, indulge in some legal wacky baccyin one of the coffee shops, ship in a gallonof Amstel and then go window shopping inthe red light district. That’s the take mostmen have on Amsterdam and, I have toadmit, it’s something I’ve done myself on acouple of occasions. It’s a shame becausethere’s much more to Amsterdam than thecouple of streets and handful of alleys thatmake up the red light district.I have a group of long-time friends from universityand every year or two we get together for a longweekend. Over the years we’ve done Barcelona,Berlin and Newquay in Cornwall but I was a bittaken aback when someone suggested Amsterdam;two of my friends are girls after all. I decided a goodstarting point would be to do some research; mynormal preparations for a trip to Amsterdam consistof packing a wallet full of Euros and someparacetamol. Doing my homework paid off straightaway; I found some cheap flights to Schipol withKLM and booked some rooms in a nice old hotelclose to the station for around £70 per night. We went in late April and found it unseasonablywarm with glorious spring sunshine. After checkingin to the hotel we decided to have a chilledafternoon and wandered over into Jordaan, aworking class district that has been transformed intoAmsterdam’s equivalent of Soho in New York. Lunchin an amazingly trendy restaurant was followed by acouple of beers for the boys while the ladiesbrowsed in the boutiques which throng the district. As the weather was so pleasant we decided to tryout one of the activities I had researchedbeforehand, a boat trip around the Canal Ring andinto the Old Centre. There were no boring guidedtours for us, though; we rented our own boat. Before you start they give you a brief lesson inboating etiquette and provide you with a map of thecanals, then away you go. The Canal Ring is lined by

some truly gorgeous 17th Century houses and ourjourney into the Old Centre inadvertently took usinto the red light district which must be the mostpicturesque in the whole world. Sadly, the boat waselectrically powered with a top speed of 5mph, notreally a white knuckle ride. That evening we ate in the hotel restaurant beforeheading out on the town. One of our group insistedon reliving his youth by having a toot on a bong inone of the coffee shops but mainly it was a leisurelyand enjoyable bar crawl. If you keep away from thered light district with its touts, drug pushers anddrunken youths, Amsterdam is a very civilised andfriendly city for a night out.The next day we hired bikes and set off to see thetulip fields. Unfortunately, we got lost and wound upin a park next to Schipol Airport. A word of warning;for a native of Amsterdam riding a bike is as naturalas breathing and they find idiotic Brits wobblingaround and getting in the way intensely annoying. That afternoon we visited the Rembrandt Museum(everybody likes a bit of Rembrandt) and then thegirls wanted to see the Anne Frank museum. It allsounded a bit maudlin to me so I enjoyed a beer ina nearby bar while they went and depressedthemselves. Both the girls had to fly back that evening, thepressures of being a mother, but we boys hadanother night to enjoy in Amsterdam. I’m afraid tosay that it all turned into a beer fuelled adventureand we wound up in the infamous Banana Bar. Thenext day we caught the morning flight home, shamefaced and with thumping hangovers.Amsterdam, you’ve got to love it.John Grange

fter a long breakI am back andraring to go(well, sort of!).

I haven’t been to the allotmentsmuch in the last 4 months due tobad health, so when I went down

last week to fix the shed door, which had swollenwith the damp, I have to admit my heart sank when Isaw our plot. There is so much work to be done.Thank goodness I managed to cover up at least halfof the raised beds last September, so at least theyare weed free. The biggest problem is in betweenthe raised beds as the weed repressant and barkchippings seem to have gone on strike and theweeds are pushing there way up!I have to admit I have not sown one seed yet andhave, just today, bought my seed potatoes and seedcompost, so now I am ready for the off!The seed potatoes are now ‘chitting’ in front of awindow in old orange boxes. Leaving them there fora few weeks will allow them to produce shoots or‘chits’, thereby guaranteeing a quick start after theyhave been put in the ground. When they are aboutan inch long I can plant them out – probably mid tolate March. This year I have bought Charlotte as myearly crop, we had a great yield last year of thisvariety. They are lovely boiled with a dollop of butteron top, and they are also good served cold in salads. For the main crop I have chosen King Edwards andDesiree, these are usually pretty reliable and cropwell, although the King Edwards were a little smalllast year. I am just finishing off last years potatoes, soI am looking forward to some new ones. I alwaysgrow some at home too - there’s nothing nicer thanpopping to the bottom of the garden to delve forsome for dinner!I wonder what this years weather will be like... it wasa complete washout last year. I was glad to haveraised beds so at least our crops were not lying inwater for any period of time. This may be a good tipfor anyone starting off if our weather continues likethis!Home grown food has never been so popular, andwith good reason, not only is gardening a good formof gentle exercise, but your own vegetables shouldalways be fresher and tastier than any shop boughtproduce. It shouldn’t cost a fortune either as long asyou follow these helpful tips.A greenhouse is a good investment, but a cold framecan be just as good. If you are handy with a hammer

and nails you can make one easily using an oldwindow frame, failing this, use a window sill to raiseyour seedlings. When growing crops in containers, position them toreceive maximum light, and also plan containercropping so all the available space is in constant use.Buying plants from nurseries can be costly - it ismuch cheaper to grow them yourself from seed. Ibuy a lot of my seeds off a well known auction site. Ibought some broccoli seeds a couple of weeks ago, they were nearly 50p cheaper than exactly the samepacket I saw in a shop (and it was free postage andpacking). Sometimes buying this way you may endup with thousands of seeds - but why not swap withlike-minded veggie growers. And don’t forget mostseeds last for a couple of years as long as they arekept cool and dry.Start seeds in cell trays in the greenhouse or indoors. If they are sown directly in the ground you willprobably only get one in four plants to mature. Ifthey are in cell trays the success rate is 80% better.Only grow as much as you need, this takes time tomaster, some people keep a record each season, butit can be difficult to assess sometimes, especiallywith our weather!Don’t forget to freeze as much of your surplus aspossible. Most vegetables will freeze well, and ifthey don’t, there are other methods of preserving.Once one crop has finished be ready to replace itwith another one. Remember to rotate your cropson a four year plan to reduce the risk of disease andto help soil fertility. Finally, talking of soil, keep it in good condition, dress it with compost each year and try not tocompact it by walking on it. If your soil is poor andheavy, build raised beds and fill them with a soil andcompost mix.Go on! Get out there! Get growing!

You’re never too old, toowacky or wild, to pick up abook and read to a child...This is taken from the USwebsite for ‘Read AcrossAmerica’ Day, which takesplace on March 2nd - theanniversary of Dr. Seuss’sdeath. The slogan caught myeye when I was looking forsomething else entirelybecause it was sounmistakeably Seuss-ish, andin our family Dr. Seuss isworshipped across thegenerations. In spite of being born in the UK, I was brought upon the works of Dr. Seuss. My mother was a traineeEnglish teacher who wrote her dissertation on him.She adored the way he played with language. Myown children could recite The Cat in the Hat word-for-word before they could ever read it forthemselves. Like all the best young-children’s authors, Seussnever talked down to them. His work is playful, silly, and anarchic, something which appeals to childrenthe world over, yet he never had any children of hisown. He was born Theodore Seuss Geisel. He startedusing Seuss while at university and added the ‘Dr.’as a joke; because his father always said he wantedhim to be a professor! He loved to write and drawcartoons, yet his first book, And to Think That I Sawit on Mulberry Street, was rejected by 27publishers - a lesson to aspiring authorseverywhere. It’s no understatement to say that he revolutionizedchildren’s literature. Prior to Seuss, US children hadbeen taught to read using the rather sterile Dickand Jane books. I can remember in the UK, agedfive, being taught using the English equivalent,Peter and Jane. I remember my mother rolling hereyes and saying, ‘I’m sure we can find somethingmore fun than this darling,’ before presenting mewith The Cat in the Hat. I was hooked.

Seuss published more than 40 books during hislifetime and they’ve sold over half a billion copies, more even than JK Rowling. We don’t celebrate Dr.Seuss in this country as they do in the US, butperhaps we should. Without him we might not havethe marvellous works of Julia Donaldson, LynleyDodd or Lauren Child. So Happy Dr Seuss Day! FASCINATING FACT One of Seuss’s most popularbooks, Green Eggs and Ham, was written as theresult of a bet that he could not write a book usingonly 50 words. The words are, in order ofappearance:“ I am Sam; that; do not like; you green eggs andham; them; would here or there; anywhere; in ahouse with mouse; eat box fox; car they; could; maywill see tree; let me be; train on; say the dark; rain;goat; boat; so try may; if; good; thank”Sarah Davey
