Those that are brought in are usually made as gifts for weddings, going to university, grandchildren (Roxanna and her Nancy Crow projects aside). Of course, we have seen some spectacular gift bed quilts, nothing like an occasion to bring out the desire to try a more challenging design or use up some specially saved fabric (or buy some hot off the loom zingers), but does one grow tired of making bed quilts? Or maybe one simply doesn’t need any more. I have a collection of quilts made by my grandmother, most of which have seen long service on beds, keeping someone warm. They are used . Yet, I realize that I don’t sleep anymore in a house where, in the winter, it is cold when I get out of bed. Or at least, not really cold. Perhaps it was R-2000 insulation standards that were the death knell of bed quilts. Yet, I don’t stop making them, or versions of them in smaller forms which are less physically exhausting to handle while quilting. I can think of two right now, oddly enough that are gifts, that are banging on the door of “get me done” and in the hands of the recipients right now. As show and share proves, we continue to make “quilted items” in abundance and with tremendous artistry. Meanwhile, as the leaves are turning, I realize I need to get on it now and take down the spring wall- quilts, to get the fall ones up before they come down for the Christmas ones! Linda Van Lierde I am a humble quilter that enjoys collecting fabric and making quilts. I have been quilting close to 30 years and enjoy it more than when I first started. I had a short spurt of what I call fast track sewing trying to keep up with all the designers and patterns and realized that I needed to sit and enjoy the process. This is where I started doing more hand work such as appliqué. I also love to swap blocks with online groups and try to create quilts from the blocks I receive. I have also taught my mother the beginnings of quilting and she has caught the bug and flown with it as well. ETQG – October 2016 – Page 1 of 6

Looking at the pictures of what I

missed at last month’s meeting,

I realize that members rarely bring in

large bed quilts anymore. Those that

are brought in are usually made as

gifts for weddings, going to

university, grandchildren (Roxanna

and her Nancy Crow projects aside).

Of course, we have seen some

spectacular gift bed quilts, nothing like an occasion to

bring out the desire to try a more challenging design

or use up some specially saved fabric (or buy some

hot off the loom zingers), but does one grow tired of

making bed quilts?

Or maybe one simply doesn’t need any more. I have a

collection of quilts made by my grandmother, most of

which have seen long service on beds, keeping

someone warm. They are used. Yet, I realize that I

don’t sleep anymore in a house where, in the winter, it

is cold when I get out of bed. Or at least, not really

cold. Perhaps it was R-2000 insulation standards that

were the death knell of bed quilts.

Yet, I don’t stop making them, or versions of them in

smaller forms which are less physically exhausting to

handle while quilting. I can think of two right now,

oddly enough that are gifts, that are banging on the

door of “get me done” and in the hands of the

recipients right now.

As show and share proves, we continue to make

“quilted items” in abundance and with tremendous

artistry. Meanwhile, as the leaves are turning, I realize

I need to get on it now and take down the spring wall-

quilts, to get the fall ones up before they come down

for the Christmas ones! Linda Van Lierde

QUILT TOURS

Thursday, May 25, 2017 - Patchwork Mystery Tour in Canada September 11-19, 2017 - Piece together A QUILTERS DREAM

September Speaker – Bev Stevens – Disappearing Blocks

ETQG – October 2016 – Page 2 of 6

Bev had a Door Prize for us – a tote bag

containing a large variety of quilting

goodies. The winner was Diane D.

On September 28, 2016, Bev

Stevens presented us with an

array of disappearing blocks:

4-patches, 9-patches, pinwheels,

hourglasses, half-square

triangles, and pyramids, that

with just a bit of cutting and

rearranging resulted in some

very complicated looking

blocks.

Thank you Bev for such an

inspiring evening!

September Meeting -- Project Linus

Linus Update by Lynn M.

We had a bumper crop of Linus quilts in September.

Three from Del, three from Helen, one from Nina, two

from ? (one floral, one made up of tiny 9-patches), and

one from another ? (Olympic animals).

The last three were handed in as I was up front

showing the quilts, after which my brain batteries went

dead; I later realized I didn't remember who those

quilts were from.

We like to give credit to you wonderful Linus-makers,

so please either bring me your quilts at the beginning

of the meeting or at break so I can attach names to

them, or pin your name to your quilt(s) before handing

them over to such a memory-challenged person as

myself.

Thanks to all of you for your creative efforts. Diana,

our contact person, was delighted with the results;

there are some lucky little ones out there who will be

comforted by one of our lovely ETQG Linus quilts.

Ed.Note: Other Linus-makers were Jean, Bill & Raili.

Missing Photo of Quilt with pink hearts and green sashing. If anyone has a picture of this quilt please email it to the newsletter editor. Thank you.

New Fabric Shop in Our Neighbourhood

On October 1st a new shop opened up at 471 Cosburn

Ave, just south of O’Connor, between Coxwell and

Donlands: Fabric Spark and Country Clothesline.

Two online fabric enterprises joined forces and are

now offering their out-of-the-ordinary fabrics to the

public. They are open three days a week: Wednesday

and Saturday from 10:00 to 4:00 and Thursday from

10:00 to 8:00. The shop is bright and colourful and

surprisingly spacious-feeling for its small size. For a

look at what they have to offer, check out their

websites: http://countryclothesline.ca/ and

https://fabricspark.com/. Opening day was abuzz with

local quilters and beaming shop owners who were

thrilled to learn that there is a quilt guild in their own

back yard. I left them with one of our ETQG flyers.

At first glance the fabrics are not what I would

normally gravitate to, but I quickly realized what

gems they have among their more unusual selections

of patterns and colourways. A bit of this and a bit of

that would really spark up some of my tired at-home

languishing yardage! Needless to say, I did not leave

empty handed!
