Why do students take online classes? Students enroll and participate in eCampus courses for a variety of reasons. Some of the more frequently reported reasons center upon the fact that taking a course online can significantly resolve scheduling conflicts. Oftentimes students who are in the IB program, students who take a large load of AP classes, students in band, NCAPS, etc., find that moving one or more of their course choices to eCampus can free up space in the daily schedule. Another common reason for selecting online courses is to recover credit lost from past performances or from transferring in from another school system. In addition to the courses available at your high school, eCampus currently oers two courses only available online: Career Internship and Discover the Arts. And finally, eCampus allows hard working students the option to take additional courses over and above the daily schedule. If you are comfortable carrying an increased course load, choose to take an online course in addition to your daily schedule as opposed to in place of one of your daily blocks. Readiness for eLearning: A Self-Assessment I am technically capable of completing coursework on my MacBook Air. I am comfortable using my laptop on most days of the week to access my online course. I have a reliable Internet connection at home. I can access my NKCS email account and check it daily for updates. I understand that self motivation is a key component of online learning. I am comfortable with the fact that I will not likely have face-to-face contact with my eCampus teacher. I understand that establishing a plan for frequent study time away from distractions is important for success in an online course. eCampus is the online learning program in the North Kansas City Schools. Courses are taught by experienced district teachers and meet the national, state, and district standards. All courses can be accessed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, using any computer with internet access. Blackboard is the course management platform used for all fully online courses. Teachers communicate with students by using discussion boards, email, voicemail, and through the virtual classroom itself.
