IF there’s one car maker whichhas blossomed in recent yearsit has to be Hyundai. TheKorean brand has maturedfrom a limited frills, high on

value manufacturer into a seriousplayer.

Its latest batch of small cars suchas the i10 city model, the larger i30hatch and the ix35 SUV have helpedsales in Britain surge from 28,000units in 2008 to an anticipated 65,000this year – and that’s despite theeconomic gloom.

The key has been a modernapproach to styling, better buildquality and improved engines nowbacked up with a five year

unlimited mileage guarantee.But what we have seen over the

past couple of years is just the tip ofthe iceberg.

Come next month, a new flagshipmodel is being launched which willtake Hyundai into a higher league.

The i40 Tourer will be going headto head with thelikes of the FordMondeo and VWPassat estates – andit is good enough inevery way to givethem a run fortheir money.

Not only does thei40 haverefreshinglymodern lines, it’swell appointed andfeatures decentengines which offermore than adequateperformance whilebeing economical.

Only one model –the 2.0-litre petrol – falls outside ofthe 160g/km CO2 company car taxthreshold and the i40 looks set to bea keen competitor in the fleetmarket as well as the private scene.

The other nine versions of the i40Tourer – and that includes therange topping 1.7-litre dieselautomatic – all come in below the160 mark, and one is among the

greenest estates aroundwith emissions of just 113g/km.

Priced from £19,395, the i40 1.7CRDi fitted with Hyundai’s BlueDrive eco system can averagealmost 66mpg and escapes car tax inits first year.

The i40 Tourer range costs from£18,395 for a 1.6-litre petrol versionto £25,895 for the diesel automaticand standard equipment includes

air conditioning, stability controlsand a sophisticated electronicparking brake which activatesautomatically as the car comes torest – a feature similar to that foundon BMWs.

There is also a voice-controlledBluetooth system fitted to allmodels while sat nav and a rearview camera come as standard onthe mid and top range versionspriced from £20,195.

Automatic parking, lanedeparture warning, a heatedsteering wheel and a humiditysensor which keeps the cabincomfortable – and the windowsunfogged – are other top features.

It all adds up to a verycompetitive package with prices

undercutting the rivals by somemargin.

Inside, the i40 is exceptionallyroomy, especially with the amountof head and leg room in the rear.The back seats also recline – andthat’s something not normallyfound in cars of this class.

The quality of finish inside isimpressive and sets new standardsfor the brand – and as estates go itis very user-friendly.

Cargo capacity ranges from 553 to1,719 litres and the boot floor lip islow to help loading.

On the road the i40 is wellmannered, quiet inside and even theeconomical Blue Drive can manage0 to 60 in a respectable fashion (12.9seconds) with a top speed close to

120mph. The higher powered 1.7diesel versions develop 136ps asopposed to 115 in the Blue Drivewhich improves performance givinga 0 to 60 time of around 10.5 secondsalthough fuel economy is not quiteas impressive at 55.4mpg withemissions up to 134g/km.

Gearboxes, both six speed manualand auto, are good and the paddleshift system on the auto works well.

As sports tourers go the i40 is abreath of fresh air. It looks good,drives well, is highly practical andwith its five year warranty istremendous value for money.

No longer can Hyundai beconsidered as a cheap alternative tothe mainstream brands. With thei40 it is up there with the best.

THE theme parks of Floridamay still be beyond thereach of most cost-consciousfamilies. But American iconChevrolet has brought its

own taste of Orlando to the compactMPV scene – at a price many folkwill be able to afford.

Orlando is the name the carmaker has given to its newseven-seater that occupies the samesection of the market as establishedpeople shifters like the VolkswagenTouran, Mazda5 and Ford GrandC-MAX.

Where the Chevy differs is withits styling and price. Conservativelooks were never on the agenda forthis bruiser of a vehicle – with itstriple honeycomb front grille theOrlando is an aggressive sight toclock in your rear view mirror.

Forget the styling for a minutethough, and the practicality of thiscar is first class.

Space for five adults is ample –

even with the front seats slid wellback – the only inconvenience beinga folding rear armrest that makesthings a little uncomfortable for acentre passenger.

Hidey holes and cubbies areeverywhere while a couple of cleverinnovations come in the shape of anextra rear view mirror allowingboth driver and front passenger tosee all the car’s occupants, and acompartment for the likes of phonesand iPods hidden behind the audiofacia.

If you need to shift seven then thetwo individual third row seats

couldn’t be easier to lift or fold backdown, and they are large enough fora couple of teenagers.

Boot space is terrific unless allthe seats are in use, in which casethere’s precious little room at all,though you do get a deep, sunkenstorage area

Orlando comes in three trimlevels and the same number ofengines, including a pair of diesels,with prices from £16,410 for a1.8-litre petrol LS version.

The tested model featured themore powerful 163PS diesel, astrong engine which providedplenty of pace but at an average 35.1miles per gallon, returned wellbelow the official Combined figure.And though it was an enjoyable,lively car to drive with its six-speedmanual transmission, the ride wasjuddery.

Chevrolet is confident it offersthe best value for money compactMPV in the business and even the

entry grade Orlando LS featuresair-con, electronic stability control,follow-me-home lights, electricwindows and mirrors, remotecentral locking, six airbags, three12v power sockets, tinted glass andan adjustable steering wheel.

Buyers of the flagship LTZ gradecars also get in larger alloys,automatic cruise control, an

electro-chromatic rear view mirror,automatic headlights and wipers,blue ambient panel lighting, a glossblack centre console, power foldingdoor mirrors and a rear cargo net.

Pound for pound the Orlandocertainly punches above its weightand certainly has the pricing andkit to make it a big hit withfamilies.

Mercedes addsdiesel power to SLK roadsterA DIESEL version of theMercedes SLK roadster will begoing on in the next few monthswith fuel economy of almost 60miles per gallon.

Powered by a 2.1-litre engineturbo charged to deliver 204bhp,the SLK 250 CDI is said to becapable of accelerating from 0 to

on sale before the end of theyear.
