Mrs. Collins’s Corner “Teach by works, not just by words.”

St. Teresa of Avila “Preach the Gospel at all times, when necessary, use words.”

St. Francis of Assisi Dear Saint Raphael Parents and Friends: Words, words, words—especially in this season of elections and politics, we hear many words and promises. In the end, St. Francis and St. Teresa had it right: actions speak louder than words. Our students are studying the saints this month and asking, “what makes a person a ‘saint in the making’?” Without hesitation, they know that it is what someone does for others and not just talking about it. They know that it is not just empty promises but helping the poor, feeding the hungry, and visiting the sick. They know that it is doing what Christ would do in this world. We also need to teach our children that our words must be truthful and lift up those around us. It is so easy to be the coward who uses mean words to put down others. It takes courage to speak the truth, to stand up for those who are being picked on, and to say no to those who use words to have power over others. Our children can be courageous if we teach them the true power of their words. We are called to ACTION for the food pantry! The parish St. Vincent de Paul food pantry is desperately low in canned foods and dried goods. In this month where we are about to celebrate family and friends with a Thanksgiving feast, we need to remember those who have far less to eat. Please send canned goods, dried beans, rice, and cereal so that we might take action to “feed the hungry.” Thank you to all the teachers for their hours spent giving parents an update on each student’s progress. I am impressed with the care that is taken to give each child’s parents an accurate report on testing in reading and math, suggestions for improvement, and praise for class work. This is how you, as parents, get a glimpse of your child’s growth in academics, in their faith, and in their ability to interact with their peers. With so many hours spent at school, it is vital that parents and school partner in raising young people who will make a difference in our world. Saint Raphael School has a tradition of eating a meal to give thanks for our community. We invite preschool, the parish staff, and the older members of our parish to be our special guests. Our Feast will take place on Friday, November 18, at 11:30 am. Please consider helping set-up, cooking, serving, or with clean-up. May God help us to use words that bring hope and joy to others. May our words be supported by actions that are loving and Christ-like. Lydia Collins, Principal

Lydia Collins, Directora
