It’s flown by, but it’s certainly been another huge year for us at Isuzu Australia.

We kicked off 2015 with our annual National Dealer Meeting in Melbourne, bringing together the frontline of our nation-wide business. It was a fantastic opportunity to share ideas, experiences and strategy for the year ahead.

A few months later we were busy preparing for one of the pre-eminent events on the transport calendar, the international Brisbane Truck Show, commencing in May.

Not only did Isuzu Trucks have a huge footprint at the event as always, we also previewed the future of light trucking in Australia, the intelligent new Isuzu N Series.

With impressive new safety features, more power and a slick new look, the new N Series was a popular exhibit on the Isuzu stand and had tongues wagging, especially amongst the attending media contingent.

Speaking of media, more recently we hosted the industry’s most respected motoring journalists on our N Series test drive through regional Victoria in September.

Attendees were offered an invaluable driving experience behind the wheel of our new trucks, touring urban environments and rural highways.

The feedback we’ve received since has been overwhelmingly positive, and the drive itself a massive success.

We wrap-up 2015 with a bumper edition of Truck Power, including an article on V2X, the transport communication technology likely to shape the future of our road networks in Australia.

Chief Operating Officer and Director, Phil Taylor, takes a look at fallout from the recent Volkswagen crisis and flow-on implications for the truck industry.

In our Application Features section we cover-off on no less than two exciting fire truck examples.

The first hailing from Tasmania and equipped with a CAFS or compressed air foam system, as well as the newest edition to Hancock Victorian Plantation’s fire fleet.

And last but not least, we bring you the year’s final entrants and quarterly winners in our popular 2015 Truck of the Year competition.

We hope you enjoy this edition of Truck Power and from all of us here at Isuzu Australia, have a safe and relaxing festive season!

L ife Education takes their mobile learning centres – and mascot ‘Harold’ the giraffe – on the road to preschools, primary schools and secondary schools.

IAL, who has a long-standing relationship with Life Education’s parent organisation, Variety Club, took the opportunity at this year’s 2015 Gala Dinner to present the organisation with the brand new Isuzu F Series.

Michelle Wood, CEO of Life Education in Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia said Life Education was extremely grateful for the generosity shown by IAL in the loaning of this important piece of equipment.

“Our mobile learning centres are very large – they weigh almost 3,500 kg, and are up to 2.5 m x 10 m in width and length,” Ms Wood said.

“Towing these units from school to school within our states is complex and costly.

“Having the FRR, which has the combination of power to tow our heavy load, and agility to access our sites smoothly and safely, enables us to reinvest saved towing costs into schools which are in low socio-economic regions.

“This allows more children access to vital health messages, so therefore, this donation from IAL is making a real difference.”

IAL’s National Fleet Sales Manager, Les Spaltman, said Isuzu is honoured to give something back to an organisation that has helped millions of Aussie kids to lead healthier lives.

“It doesn’t get more important than providing access to engaging, positive education messages for our kids, and we’re extremely proud that Isuzu can be part of this,” Mr Spaltman said.

“What’s fantastic about Life Education is that they’ve taken their message on the road to ensure all kids – regardless of their location – will have the opportunity to lead a brighter, healthier future.”

Isuzu Australia Limited recently handed over the keys for a brand new Isuzu FRR 500 to Life Education – an organisation that’s been sharing positive health education with Aussie kids for over 35 years

Travelling across regional and urban landscape on Melbourne’s fringe from Derrimut, in Melbourne’s west, to Ballarat via Werribee, Bacchus Marsh

and Daylesford, the Aussie journos were in the best seat possible to comment on the comfort, handling and performance of the new N Series.

Unveiled at the Brisbane Truck Show in May, the new N Series offerings had already received rave reviews, although the Melbourne test was the first opportunity for a genuine driving experience across varied terrain.

A wrap video has also been prepared so you can watch the test drive in action and hear from critics first-hand.

Isuzu Australia Limited’s (IAL) Chief Operating Officer, Phil Taylor said “The drive day was a fantastic success and I’m confident the nation’s transport media had a genuine opportunity to experience the intelligent N Series in its natural habitat.

“Feedback we had on the day, as well as the subsequent media coverage has been nothing but positive… we couldn’t be happier with the way the trucks have been received.

“It’s vital that the underpinnings of the new N series are conveyed in the best possible terms and wrapped in the most relevant information. I think we’ve achieved that.”

The N Series is sold in over 100 countries and is the best seller in 19 of them, including Australia.

Mr Taylor added: “The new N series is the bona-fide intelligent truck. As the media witnessed on the day, the combination of the truck, telematics and our strong after sales push places us in good stead to continue to serve the needs of the astute Australian market.”

Along with the new look and nomenclature, the N Series boasts increased power in several models, interior updates and a comprehensive suite of safety features.

Critics are also in agreement that Isuzu’s N Series ticks every box on the safety front, as Isuzu Electronic Stability Control (IESC) applies to all Isuzu NLR, NNR, and NPR models – building on an already commanding set of safety credentials within the range.

Isuzu called on the nation’s leading transport journalists to test drive the new 2015 intelligent N Series. Taking place over two days in Victoria, six different 2015 N Series models were put through their paces by the country’s toughest critics.

DRIVE, SYDNEY MORNING HERALD ‘MASS APPEAL’ SAM CHARLWOOD

“The most striking attribute of the N-Series on the road is how car-like the driving experience has become. Road noise is well suppressed, there are no prominent rattles or vibrations and the diesel engine emits only a soft oil-burning clatter in the background as it sequences through its ratios.”

“First and foremost, they’re all incredibly easy to drive. Isuzu acknowledges that in the 4500kg GVM bracket it’s often dealing with business owners rather than truck specialists, and as such it’s put plenty of effort into making the driving experience and environment as car-like as possible.”

“The appeal of Isuzu’s N Series is plain to see. These are compact but comfortable and capable workhorses, and the many updates and refinements build on an already solid platform.”

Isuzu is proud to have been a part of the 2015 Australasian Fire and Emergency Services Authorities Council (AFAC) conference and exhibition.

Isuzu Trucks showcased a number of vehicles from its 4x4 range suited to emergency services applications, while the Isuzu Engines product was well supported with a selection of key models from the off-highway engines range taking pride of place on a number of exhibitors’ stands.

“The theme of the conference was ‘New directions in emergency management’ which was very fitting given that a number of new products featuring Isuzu’s off-road engine range were launched during the event,” said Dean Whitford, Manager – Isuzu Engines, IAL.

“For example, it was fantastic to see so many months of collaboration come to fruition when GAAM Emergency Services launched their new MK300 water pump powered by the Isuzu water-cooled 4LE2 engine.

“We’ve been working extremely hard to develop the quietest, most compact engine we can, and AFAC 15 has been proof that our ongoing refinements are being welcomed by the industry,” Mr Whitford said.

Isuzu Trucks also showcased an extensive range of emergency services specific 4x4 models including an impressive NPS 300 4x4, featuring the brand new compressed air foam system (CAFS).

The NPS, belonging to the Tasmania Fire Service, is the first of its kind to feature such as system making it unique to the Isuzu platform at 7.5 tonne GVM.

“Reliability is everything when lives are on the line and our trucks and engines deliver that every time for the emergency services,” said Les Spaltman, National Fleet Sales Manager IAL.

“The AFAC conference is designed to showcase and share the combined experience from emergency services organisations, research and analysis from across the industry,” Mr Spaltman said.

“Each year this gathering of minds and expertise gives a deeper understanding of what Isuzu can bring to the table.

“We’re proud to be associated with such a crucial Australian industry and we look forward to the relationship continuing to grow in the years ahead.”

Fresh research into the representation of women and young people in the Australian transport industry has revealed career barriers continue to be a major issue.

The South Australian Freight Council’s report, ‘Gender and Equality in Transport and Logistics,’ has highlighted the continued decline of women employed in the transport and logistics industries.

Transport and Logistics Industry Skills Council statistics confirm that women represented only approximately 23 per cent of Australia’s transport and logistics workforce.

However, according to the Australian Government’s Workplace Gender Equality Agency statistics of May 2015, over 45 per cent of the total Australian workforce is female, which presents extensive staffing potential.

Association President of the South Australian Road Transport Association (SARTA) and Director of Whiteline Transport, Sharon Middleton, told Truck Power staff that diversity benefits business more generally.

“Transport and Logistics are industries that, like several others, face growing staffing pressures as a result of an ageing workforce. This presents major difficulties in attracting skilled workers, including women.

“We need to examine the industry more broadly, and make changes which assist, not just women, but also younger people who may be considering working in transport,” Ms Middleton added.

“A part of the industry’s overall problem is that the general public has some preconceived notions about who a truck driver is, for example.

“The driver of a truck carrying hazardous goods, or millions of dollars’ worth of stock, is clearly a highly skilled worker.

“The same goes for drivers who cart livestock and who have a very detailed understanding of animal welfare, as well as specialised training.”

Ms Middleton joins a growing chorus of transport professionals who are calling for a whole of industry approach to redefining perceptions of the transport labour market.

“This is certainly not about being a steering-wheel attendant.

“Truck driving requires many skill-sets to operate these vehicles safely, professionally and to meet the rigours of regulation and accreditation.

“I don’t hear of too many kids, while discussing career paths with teachers or their family, being asked: ‘Hey, have you ever considered becoming a professional truck driver?’”

Ms Middleton believes demonstrating clearly defined career paths is one potential solution to growing staffing issues faced by the sector. The formalisation of different skill levels via training and accreditation programs is another practical approach she’s proposed recently.

To meet these needs, federal and state government investment in this area becomes crucial as it allows opportunities for industry training bodies to work more closely with industry to target skills shortages and training where it’s needed.

“Simply up-skilling your licence is not a means of delivering safer outcomes,” Ms Middleton said.

“If we’re truly serious about delivering trained employees, ‘buddy system’ training is vital to give drivers behind the wheel experience with the different trucks, different loads, different weather conditions, different traffic conditions, and so on.

“Fleet operators require the services of comprehensively coached and trained drivers to meet rigorous driver insurance clearances.”

According to Ms Middleton, shifting ingrained negative perceptions around the broader transport industry, coupled with a targeted approach to training is the key to attracting skilled workers to the sector, be they women, younger workers or mature-aged applicants.

“The public needs to know that truck drivers, whether they are male or female, are all covered by an award wage, with industrial relations laws to control this. It would be just ground-breaking however, if career paths in transport could be laid out more precisely.

“The public has trouble recognising that truck

driving has evolved into a profession, with many skill

and knowledge levels.”

ISUZU TRUCK BUYERS REAP THE BENEFITS OF ISIS 8.1

ISIS has become an essential part of the sales process for every new Isuzu truck customer. The dealer utilises customer requirements to provide a superior, fit-for-application trucking solution.

This enables Isuzu truck dealers to ‘build’ the customer their own Isuzu truck in front of them – in any location.

The ISIS 8.1 has full touch screen functionality on tablets and laptops and will also work on older desktop PCs and laptops without touch screens.

The updated ISIS now boasts enriched vehicle graphics, and content updates including the new 2015 N Series models.

Isuzu Australia Limited (IAL) Chief Engineer, Prod-uct Strategy Simon Humphries said that ISIS 8.1 utilises smart technology to provide customers with an electronic report on a truck’s characteris-tics and performance.

“The best truck you can buy is always going to be the one that is best suited to your needs, and that

is exactly what ISIS 8.1 enables you to do,” Mr Humphries said.

“All ISIS solutions generated at Isuzu truck dealerships can be stored into a ‘cloud’ server for access by customers operating on any compatible device around the country.

“It also means Isuzu Australia can study what our customers are looking for and continue to fine tune our product and service offerings into the future.

“Not only can ISIS provide you with detailed whole-of-life costing, we can also provide you with a full analysis of how that truck will perform once loaded and over varying road conditions.

“Working with the information you provide, our dealers will use ISIS 8.1 to find you the Isuzu truck model best suited to your every requirement.”

To ensure customers are in line with current statutory regulations and limitations, ISIS 8.1 has been updated with the new National Code of Practice for Heavy Vehicle Modifications checklist which can be completed within an ISIS ‘workout’.

Isuzu Trucks continue to redefine the customer experience with the release of the newly updated Isuzu Sales Information System 8.1 (ISIS 8.1)

INTERCONNECTED: THE FUTURE OF ROAD TRANSPORTIn this edition of Truck Power we continue our coverage of the emerging technologies set to shape the future of road transport as we know it. This instalment looks at ‘vehicle-to-everything’ (V2X) communication, which combines vehicle to vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure systems to create the ultimate, connected_ vehicle.

TRUCKPOWER

EDITION 3 2015

10

Page 11: EDITION 3 2015 - Isuzu Australiaisuzu.com.au › media › 123248 › 0149ar_winter2015_tp_v08... · australia’s top selling truck brand since 1989 - t-mark 2014 edition 3 2015

In the last edition of Truck Power we discussed the three modes of communication that come under the umbrella of Intelligent Transport Technologies or ITS: vehicle-to-

vehicle (V2V), vehicle-to- infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle-to-everything (V2X). In this edition we discuss the potential of V2X technology to create a road experience which is safer, less congested, and more user-friendly for all.

Isuzu is already fully engaged with offering greater vehicle and driver visibility to customers with their current telematics offerings, Isuzu Connect and Isuzu Connect Plus.

Using on-board vehicle sensors, vehicle positioning and management software, Isuzu Telematics provides real-time, 24/7 data for drivers, operators and fleet managers to access from anywhere on the web.

TELEMATICS: THE BENEFITS The benefits are many, and include opportunities to significantly optimise driver safety, improve fuel efficiency and keep better informed about your vehicle’s health and servicing requirements.

One key benefit is Isuzu’s two-way messaging system, which has been added to the Isuzu Telematics package - for release with the new 2016 Isuzu F Series range. The technology enables two-way communication between fleet controllers (home base) and vehicles out on the road.

Additionally, Isuzu is also anticipating the introduction of electronic work diaries (EWDs) as part of its intelligent truck platform.

Currently, Australian drivers are required to keep written work diaries if operating more than 100 kilometres from home base. The up-keep and accuracy of these diaries are a constant source of angst within the industry, although an electronic format is expected to eliminate human error, reduce fatigue and increase overall road safety.

Due to government process and specifications,

wholesale take-up of EWDs is not expected until well into 2017, although Isuzu will have the technology and hardware in place when these arrangements become finalised.

V2I technology will help further improve road safety by enabling vehicles to communicate with other elements in the road infrastructure network such as traffic lights and on-ramp meters.

Put into practice, V2I technology could inform a driver of an upcoming red light and indicate the speed they will need to take to hit the intersection in perfect time to get the green light.

V2X

V2X encompasses both V2I and V2V technology, to create a comprehensive road communication technology that offers all road users more control over their vehicles and their own safety.

Although still in its infancy, V2X is considered the technology which could eventually create a safe framework for autonomous vehicles to operate within.

For most consumers, self-driving vehicles are still stuff of the future, however, commentators are now saying with undivided attention and efforts by the industry, the technology could be rolled out in the next ten years.

In terms of safety, V2X technology could also alert pedestrians and drivers of danger before any incident occurs. Bluetooth is set to become increasingly important in V2X communications, in terms of the vehicle’s communication to everything around them, including people.

Through Bluetooth, every pedestrian who carries a smart phone becomes part of the connectivity network.

The technology can also issue a warning to drivers of unseen dangers such as collision risks or a car approaching which is speeding.

Eventually the technology will also be able to inform drivers if the car next to them has worn breaks, or warn about a driver who is braking unexpectedly up ahead.

V2X could significantly reduce traffic congestion by alerting drivers to rush hour traffic, accidents, and suggest alternate routes before they set off on their journey. This in turn would improve fuel economy and save drivers money in the long term.

The issues innovators in V2X face is that in order for V2X to work, all infrastructures involved will have to be V2X optimised and there’ll need to be a widespread take-up of the technology by individuals and fleets across the industry for the results to prove really beneficial.

Australia is already well positioned to stay on the crest of global developments in areas of V2X developments and related technologies.

Adelaide hosted the recent International Driverless Cars Conference, which explored issues such as the research, work and regulations that need to be taken up before a safe roll-out of connected, automated vehicles in this country.

In an Australian first, South Australian Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Stephen Mullighan introduced a bill to parliament in September which will allow ‘real life’ testing of the automated technology on public roads.

This move could jumpstart the market towards the goal of using V2X technology to improve road and vehicle safety, enhance collision avoidance systems, fuel economy and develop smarter traffic management systems.

South Australian based company Cohda Wireless are also playing their part in forging the way, with their hardware and software being used in 60 per cent of all Vehicle to Infrastructure and Vehicle to Vehicle field trials worldwide.

As companies like Cohda lead the way, intelligent, V2X technology looks certain to be an inevitable part of our transport future.

Autonomous trucks may also one day become a reality but it will depend on highly optimised road networks and a massive uptake across the board.

Across Australia this fire season, dedicated fire crews will potentially devote their lives to tackling some of Australia’s most dangerous urban and regional blazes.

It’s a testing time for fire fighters all over the country and the Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) is no exception. Only a few months ago the service tackled about 20 fires burning out of control across the island state, mostly in remote bush areas, off the back of unseasonably high temperatures.

With decades of experience fighting fires, it’s still always at the back of Tasmania Fire Service Fleet Manager, Leon ‘Alfie’ Smith’s mind come summer holiday time.

This summer Isuzu’s innovation teamed with Alfie’s industry experience, producing an exciting development that puts TFS at the forefront of industry innovation and in the best position possible to tackle whatever the hot season brings their way.

With a long history of using Isuzu 4x4s, it seemed

only natural the TFS would work with Isuzu to optimise the NPS 300 4x4 Crew’s firefighting capacity even further - introducing the nation’s first integrated compressed air foam system (CAFS).

Presented at the 2015 Australasian Fire and Emergency Services Authorities Council (AFAC) conference and exhibition, the customised NPS and brand new CAFS marked a ground-breaking moment for Australian fire service fleets.

On site at AFAC 2015, Alfie spoke about the Isuzu and the optimised NPS 300 4x4.

Summer is a challenging time for firefighters all across the country as they prepare to battle some of the nation’s toughest blazes. This time around, Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) will have a brand new Isuzu NPS 300 4x4 in their corner, delivering superior safety and the nation’s first integrated compressed air foam system

“Traditionally it has been a 10,000 kg chassis with the same amount of water, without compressed air foam on it. Being able to have a smaller vehicle with a big water capacity gives significantly more flexibility in the off-road firefighting application.”

In 2014 Isuzu increased the GVM rating from 6,500 kg to 7,500 kg for Fire and Emergency Services working with the NPS 4x4 single or crew models, paving the way for the TFS’ future innovations.

“With an Isuzu 4HK1-TCN engine and a maximum power output of 118 kW (158 HP) @ 2,600 RPM, the additional 1,000 kg payload meant practical benefits for the emergency services industry, and ultimately a safer fire service for everyone,” Alfie said.

“When we set out to actually scope the defined role and capabilities at 7.5 tonne compared to the previous 6.5 we had, there was clearly an opportunity to look at what could be achieved with that extra 1,000 kg of available mass.

“We wanted to increase water capacity and to bring along some of the value-add components, like embracing the compressed air foam

capabilities onto the platform.”

In tangible terms, the extra 1,000 kg payload capacity allowed the TFS to add an additional 500 L of water to the NPS and a complete CAFS powered by an Isuzu engine.

As Tasmania Fire Service deal with rural as well as urban fires, the service has to consider an increased number of safety factors in terms of off-road and vegetation firefighting.

The Isuzu NPS provides driver and passenger airbags, with seatbelt pretensions, double acting hydraulic shock absorbers, and a Hill Start Aid to ensure top class performance in off-road rural bush fires.

“One of the key considerations in appliance development is firefighter safety and we have to consider everything from ergonomics to access and egress from the passenger cell.

“With the NPS 300 4x4 we haven’t had to modify the grab rails or the steps, as they were already ideal for what we needed – that is something that’s been achieved through liaison with the industry previously and that’s a credit to Isuzu.”

TFS has also implemented their own advanced safety communication systems which ensure the dedicated crew are kept as safe as possible while battling some of Tassie’s fiercest blazes.

“We have a crew detection system activated in this vehicle which enables us to see who the occupants of the truck are, where it’s located, how much water and foam is on board, how and how much they’re using during a fire.

“From there we can make tactical decisions about how long the duration will be before they’ll need additional help,” Alfie said.

“With the added safety systems that we’ve automated now, we’ve eliminated the need for individuals to rely on conveying messages when they’re under duress.

“As a package, considering the ergonomics, what it can achieve for firefighting effectiveness, and the enhanced crew safety systems; our new NPS set-up is absolutely a ground breaker.”

ISUZU F SERIES DELIVERS RELIABILITY FOR TASSIE MANUFACTURERA bespoke build solution for Steeline’s two FVD 1000s allowed this trusty Tassie manufacturer to optimise their carrying capacity and stand apart from competitors

John Erends, owner of Tasmania’s Steeline Roofing, is willing to share the perfect recipe for growing your business in a small market: top notch customer

service, quality Australian-made products, and trucks that won’t let you down.

In the past decade, John has put 40 years of industry experience to good use, growing Steeline from $1.8 million per annum to a team of 23 staff with a substantial $9 million turnover.

It’s no mean feat when the competition is fierce and your customers are some of Tassie’s most discerning tradies.

“This business took a while to kick off, it didn’t get to where it was overnight,” John said.

“In the building industry you’ve got to keep bobbing your head up and making yourself available, and try to meet the needs of the potential customer.

“In a small market, there’s no heading across town to try and take the trade from someone else –because there is no ‘across town’. You have to deal with the area you’ve got and just be the very best you can.”

Steeline is a nationwide group of roofing independents that specialise in manufacturing and delivering customised building product supplies

roll formed from Bluescope Australian-made steel.

“Steeline is a buying group as such, not a franchise. There are 30 of us across the country, operating from Perth and as far north as Cairns,” John said.

“Our biggest supplier is Bluescope Steel Australia. They supply us the flat roofing sheeting and we put it through our machines to produce everything from customised roofing sheets through to structural beams for sheds, garages and patios.”

Five years ago, John’s Tasmanian operation was going from strength to strength and demand for deliveries had increased.

“Before we had the Isuzus, breakdowns were one of the first things on our mind every

day and now it’s one of the last – the Isuzus have taken the worry out of the equation.”

FEATURE

When John was keen to put the headaches of unreliable trucks behind him, he purchased his first Isuzu FVD 1000. It proved such an asset that Steeline added a second FVD to their small fleet earlier this year.

“I definitely think having reliable trucks has been one of the secrets to keeping our customers happy and growing the business.

“Before we had the Isuzus, breakdowns were one of the first things on our mind every day and now it’s one of the last – the Isuzus have taken the worry out of the equation.

“A customer of ours might have tradies waiting on site for the roofing material to arrive so we just can’t afford to have trucks breaking down as we’ll be costing them money.”

When John purchased his first Isuzu, a close collaboration was formed with Shane Hilder and the team from Webster Trucks to develop a bespoke build solution that could efficiently transport lengthy pieces of roofing equipment.

“Initially we thought we’d have to buy a semi to carry the lengths of material we needed to, but after talking to Webster Trucks we realised we could make a fixed tray work for 95 per cent of the job requirements we had.

“But to do that we needed the trucks to be able to carry the absolute maximum lengths that are allowed on Tasmanian roads.

“Webster Trucks listened to what we needed and took care of the whole build, lengthening the chassis to give us the longest tray we could and designing a racking system that could run over the cab.”

When the second Isuzu was purchased, Websters and Steeline were given an opportunity to perfect their initial design and maximise the FVD’s carrying capacity even further.

“On our first truck we could carry 11 metre sheets on top, and with our newest FVD we can carry 12.5 metres over the cab and eight metres on the flat bed.

“The racking system which runs over the cab was signed off by an engineer as we had to make sure we adhered to regulations and weren’t putting anyone at risk. We strictly follow the weight restrictions of not putting any more than 750 kg on top.

“Most of our sales are for roofing sheets of up to 12.5 metres and for the very small percentage that is bigger than that, we’re happy to get a contractor in with a semi to deliver those.”

Both trucks were also built to accommodate a Fassi loader crane with an outreach of 15 metres that tucked in neatly behind the cab.

“We needed the trucks to have a crane that could lift up to 1.5 tonne, and the FVD 1000 had enough power to operate that level of auxiliary equipment,” John said.

The unique racking system on Steeline’s FVDs has allowed Steeline to provide a service that many of their competitors aren’t equipped to do.

“You need to be friendlier and very customer-focused when you’re operating in Tasmania. We need people to come and

see us and enjoy the experience. Relationships are much more

important here than they are in the big smoke.”

“Other roofing manufacturers here use quite a different set up and most don’t use a racking system, so they do have issues with delivering the longer length building products,” John said.

“Ticking off our wish list for the Isuzu trucks was made that much easier because the guys at Websters just took hold of requirements and said ‘we can do this for you’.”

Aside from a friendly rivalry between competitors, John said it’s vital to maintain a good relationship with your customers and suppliers when you’re operating in such a small market.

“I treat my suppliers the same way I treat my customers, each and every one of us has to help each other,” John said.

“The suppliers are just as important as the customers, because without a continuing reliable supply chain, you can’t provide the service to your customers and that’s a really important link that some people forget about.

As well as keeping his customers happy, John’s two Isuzu F Series trucks are keeping his drivers smiling when out on the job.

“Because of Tasmania’s landscape, 70 per cent of the time our drivers are going to building sites on a hill and the feedback has been that the trucks handle the sloping sites beautifully.

“The drivers are more than happy with the comfort, ease of operation with the crane and the great lifting capacity.”

John and his team are already looking at purchasing a new long bed tray truck, and Isuzu is currently looking the firm favourite.

“I tell my staff that it isn’t me the owner that pays their wages, it’s the customer. So whatever we can do to make them come back, we need to do it.

“It’s important to me that our trucks look good out there and it’s important that the whole process and delivery is done in a timely and professional manner and that’s what Isuzu has helped us achieve.”

With responsibility for over 600,000 acres of valuable (not to mention highly flammable) plantation land, it’s understandable that Hancock

Victoria Plantations (HVP) takes its management of fire risk very seriously indeed.

So much so, the Melbourne based company has developed seven Forest Industry Brigades, or FIBs, which come under the umbrella of the Victorian Country Fire Authority.

These trained brigades are dotted strategically across Victoria and provide joint fire suppression and prevention activities, training and safety management.

Their main aim is managing fire risk facing not only their plantation assets, but also surrounding communities and private land holdings. To do so effectively, the FIBs need trusted, specialised equipment that gets the job done and keeps the crew safe.

That’s a big part of the reason HVP’s Gippsland Fire Coordinator, Maarty Krygsman, looked no further than Isuzu Trucks when searching for a tough 4x4 tanker to complement existing Toyota LandCruiser ‘slip-on’ units.

“Traditionally, we used the bigger tanker trucks that carry between 3,000 and 6,000 litres on the back, but their abilities in certain terrain were limited,” Maarty said.

“We then moved to 400 litre slip-ons that went onto the back of Toyota LandCruisers, before we recently acquired the Isuzu NPS 300 4x4 and the boys absolutely love it.

“It’s extremely versatile and it holds a huge 1,800 litres on the back, but it can go anywhere where the smaller 4x4s can go, which makes it so valuable. It carries a lot of water for its size, so it’s the first out the door these days…very popular with the guys.”

HVP is Australia’s largest private timber plantation company, owned jointly by superannuation and investment funds both in the United States and at home in Australia.

Directly employing some 450 people, their plantations supply approximately three million tonnes of hardwood, namely eucalyptus, and softwood (pine) to pulp paper mills, sawmills and panel producers across Australia and internationally.

Needless to say, HVP replaces half a billion dollars of potential forest product imports into Australia every year, so it’s very big business with plenty at stake.

Truck Power recently joined HVP and the CFA on a fuel reduction burn just outside the town of Tyers in the Gippsland region in of Victoria’s south east.

With only a few outings under its belt, the NPS was in for a solid test for the reduction burn, with an area of 50-odd acres of native bush to be managed.

“What we’re doing here today not only protects the plantation itself, but also the surrounding properties, townships and houses, so it’s about defending all of those assets from the effects of wildfire should it come through in future,” Maarty said.

“It’s not easy terrain, and we’ve got some steep unmade trails, but the Isuzu has performed fantastically.

“It’s been on patrol across the whole site today, so it really pays for itself in these situations.”

And it’s little wonder too, with a 5.2 litre, four cylinder, turbo-intercooled diesel engine supplying a handy 114 kW @ 2,600 RPM and 419 Nm in the 1,600 - 2,600 RPM band.

Abundant power at all four wheels means the HVP tanker can forge further into a fire front whilst carrying all the safety and fire suppression gear of a larger truck.

Be it on the fire front or out on the highway, the Isuzu NPS 300 has obviously earned the trust of Maarty and his crew, no doubt due to such a comprehensive suite of safety credentials.

Driver and passenger airbags, ABS and Hill Start Aid coupled with an ECE-R29 compliant cabin make for safe and reliable commuting both on the bitumen and the fire trails.

Maarty’s also had some specialised safety equipment added to Isuzu’s standard offering too.

“We installed fire curtains that drop down in the event of a burn over. We’ve got a sprinkler system in place as well, so the whole cabin is flushed with water if a fire comes over the top, and we’ve installed fire blankets in the cab that the boys can get under too, so we’re well covered in a fire safety sense.”

And it’s precisely that coverage and peace of mind that’s critical when lives and property are on the line.

Indeed, for Maarty and HVP, it’s their trust in proven, reliable and dependable capital equipment that’ll see their assets protected and their people safe.

“Simply speaking, Isuzu puts out a fantastic truck and, importantly, it meets all the standards for firefighting that we require. For the guys, it is the first truck they jump into every time, so that’s saying a lot.”

“In the past we’ve had a lot of clutch problems,

but with the smaller Isuzu, it handles just like

For decades, Victoria’s Lindsay Park Stables has been one of the biggest names in racing.

Founded by racing icon Colin Hayes, and more recently run by his son David, Lindsay Park Stables is now a renowned name worldwide and a giant in the ‘sport of kings’ – training horses for Her Majesty the Queen, and Sheikh Mandan of Dubai, to name just a few of their high profile clients.

In the weeks running up to the Melbourne Cup we spoke to Bruno Rouge-Serret (title image), Lindsay Park’s Stable Representative, about Lindsay Park racing and how important their trucks are for getting horses safely to the next big race.

“We keep everything in house. We do our own transporting; our own veterinary work, and we employ our own vets and drivers. In doing it that way you can control it to some degree, and you’ve got your finger on the pulse for just about everything,” Bruno said.

Controlling almost every aspect of the business in-house means that Lindsay Park Stables is totally self-reliant, and depend on top of the range equipment for top of the range horses.

“The transport operation in the company itself is a very good money earner. If we’re not doing it, we’re getting an outsider to do it, and that’s money that can be kept within the company,” Bruno said.

After researching the models available, Bruno and his team decided on Isuzu after finding they could opt for a dual cab without compromising on length.

“We found that the competitors couldn’t offer what we needed. We needed an eight horse back-loader with a dual cab, as we take so many staff to the races,” Bruno said.

“The horsebox has a fibreglass body, and it’s so much lighter. For a big truck like the FTR it’s also quite light at only nine tonne, so that’s a great asset to have.”

However, driving such expensive freight is a challenge, and it’s not just the horses that have to be trained.

“When you’re transporting horses, you can’t just hire any driver. You have to get someone behind the wheel that knows horses and teach them to drive, because there’s simply no freight like it.”

“The animal that we’re moving is trained to the minute, they are wound-up and full of protein, all they want to do is explode and burn off that protein.”

Bruno, who has transported many millions worth of precious horse cargo in one run, explains why keeping your drive as smooth as possible is absolutely essential.

“If he panics, he hurts himself, if he hurts himself you have to phone the boss and tell them what happened. That horse could have taken five or six months to get where it was, and because of your negligence or silly driving, you’ve got that horse injured.

“That wrong corner, that bit you take 10 kilometres an hour quicker than you should, can tip the load over and that can be disastrous.”

The Hill Start Aid and Anti-lock Braking System that come as standard in the FTR, have proved to be an unexpected benefit for Bruno and the drivers.

“This Isuzu ticked every box, the truck surprised me by how well it operates. Particularly things like the turning circle and added benefits like Brake Assist on slight ramps and hills.

“I’ve been driving nearly 30 years, and it’s really something to see how far trucks have come – it’s a pleasure to drive.”

“If for whatever reason, you take a corner wrong or you break too sharply or take off too quickly – you’ll upset that animal and the first thing it will do is panic,” Bruno said.

It’s the thorn in the side of every transport operator, but with a little bit of forward planning, anyone can make truck downtime a thing of the past

Thanks to continued advancements in technology, contemporary trucks are of a higher quality and more robust than ever before, and their engines

remarkably efficient.

Yet despite the best of intentions or the latest technology, truck downtime will always be a costly factor to contend with, and one feared by companies with large and small fleets alike.

Downtime can incur huge costs for a company, with truck repairs often incurring high costs, particularly when the repairs required are significant.

But the costs associated with downtime don’t begin and end in the workshop.

PRODUCTIVITY COSTSWhen your workhorse is undergoing repair, your productivity is automatically reduced. Without a working truck, a business’s day-to-day schedule is put on hold, automatically losing you money. This can lead to customer dissatisfaction, which can damage a business’s reputation and affect sales in the future.

DRIVER COSTSWhile downtime puts your truck out of action, it can do the same for your drivers. Without a workhorse, drivers can’t carry out their work and remain idle. This is a costly problem, particularly for small businesses, as most drivers are still entitled to receive their salary or wage.

REPLACEMENT COSTSKeen to keep customers happy and to reduce the productivity costs involved in downtime, many fleet operators choose to invest in a replacement truck. However, this is not cheap, especially when considered in conjunction with cost of repair.

REDUCING THE COST OF DOWNTIMEWhile there’s nothing you can do to guarantee your truck is on the road at all times, there are measures you can take to reduce your fleet’s chances of downtime.

PLAN ITA great way to ensure you’re prepared financially for truck downtime is to have a clear idea of how much it would cost your business.

It’s considered best-practice to overestimate the cost involved and to make provisions for hypothetical downtime scenarios. If you’re aware of the costs involved in downtime, you can save for a rainy day.

REGULAR SERVICINGA critical part of your plan must be regular, authorised truck servicing.

To help cater to customers’ needs in this area, Isuzu Trucks recently launched Isuzu Priority, a new, stress-free method of servicing Isuzu trucks. Taking out a Priority Service Agreement means that for one monthly price, repair and service will be taken care of, depending on the level of agreement entered into.

ISUZU PRIORITYIsuzu Priority ‘One’ offers sound scheduled cover, including all the essentials such as filter and lubricant replacement, valve adjustments and clearance as well as belts, hoses and more.

Meanwhile, Isuzu Priority ‘Total’ offers all of the benefits of ‘One’, with added coverage including in-house diagnostics, complete authorised servicing to all engine components, transmission, brakes, suspension and all electrical componentry.

Lastly, Isuzu Priority ‘Heritage’ offers cover to owners with older Isuzu trucks (model years 2000-11), covering lubricants, valve adjustments, all labour, fault code checks and much more.

Most Australian fleet managers and drivers for that matter can give you a pretty comprehensive run-down of their vehicles’ safety features,

engine power stats, transmissions, GVMs, even tare weights.

Very few though can wax lyrical on the amount of NOx (oxides of nitrogen) emitted by individual models in their fleet, not to mention nasties like the highly toxic Carbon Monoxide.

Of course, that’s not to say fleet managers or their drivers are careless, it’s understandably something that’s not on everyone’s radar in and amongst the fray of managing a vast or even a small transport fleet.

THE VW EFFECT Unless you’ve been living under a very large rock, you couldn’t have missed the recent international media surrounding Volkswagen and the falsifying of emissions tests in the Unites States.

Essentially, VW had developed software that meant an engine could detect an emissions test, and enter a “temperature conditioning” mode that limited the output of NOx, when the engine believed the test was over the engine reverted to its original emission output.

This means since 2009, the tests reflected results that simply couldn’t be achieved in ‘real-world’ driving situations.

Aside from trust now lost in a respected brand that’s been a staple around the world for many decades, VW’s practices have certainly cost them significantly.

VW are now facing massive fines, lawsuits and a plummeting share price. The final price of which is still unknown.

Here in Australia, some 91,000 models are said to be affected, including 14,000 Audi models, the fallout of which has yet to be fully felt.

It remains to be seen if a recall (likely to get underway in 2017) will get full take-up or not, and then there’s the issue of compensation – all questions left for VW to ponder.

SO WHAT’S SO IMPORTANT ABOUT ROAD TRANSPORT EMISSIONS?You can’t see them, but emissions like NOx do have an effect on our health and now (more than ever before), their management has morphed into a massive issue for car and truck manufacturers around the world. It’s not something we can ignore.

THE IMPACTSAccording to the Australian Government, transport emissions contribute to existing respiratory and cardiovascular conditions and can be directly linked to cancer.

That’s why, in the Australian truck industry at least, manufacturers are held to robust Euro 5 standards.

But whilst engine efficiency and emissions reduction are at the heart of Euro standards, they remain at the very cusp of what’s possible in an engineering sense, making adherence more and more difficult to attain.

DIESEL’S NOT THE BAD GUYWe shouldn’t ‘shoot the messenger’ in the wake of the VW fiasco either.

The issue isn’t so much the fuel source itself, which is where this debate is rapidly heading.

Diesel is here to stay, and for a long time. Like it or not, there simply isn’t an economically viable (in a refining sense), widely available alternative fuel on the horizon just yet.

Alternative fuels and their emissions, such as compressed natural gas (CNG), are gentler on health and the environment, but they’re expensive to extract, refine and distribute.

Meanwhile, the modern world still requires transport, energy and commerce.

ONE FOR THE ROADThere are vast differences between ‘real world’ and lab testing when it comes to emissions results and the claims of car and truck makers on the showroom floor.

In light of the worldwide response to the VW scandal, it looks certain the push for greater transparency around regulations and reporting is only to going increase in the years to come.

For manufacturers this will mean demonstrating strong leadership in the areas of transparency, and keeping our vehicles viable long-term participants of the greater road network.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT• The average age of trucks and cars on Australian

roads is far older than places like Europe and the US making the fleet far ‘dirtier’ too. If you were thinking about an upgrade, it’s probably time - especially if you’re truck or car is pre 1996.

• Research from Griffith University states Australian passenger car emission standards lag well behind EU and US standards - Australia’s current air pollutant standards are Euro 4, Europe is at 6. Our truck standards are higher at Euro 5.

• This means manufacturers, particularly car makers, can sell non-Euro 5 model cars in Australia. This drives up the overall pollution level per capita.

The back of this new NLR is set up as a mobile workshop with benches, racking equipment and a water jet machine for clearing drains. The truck is constantly in use and drivers love the AMT transmission and cruise control, which make for a smoother drive.

WATTLE GROVE PLUMBING – NNR 200 This brand new 2015 plumbing truck wide body NNR with a full body print by Bear Designs in Sydney, is a real head turner.

Proud owner Matt Hielman describes it as a great vehicle to drive and a ‘definite talking point’.

TRUCK OF THE YEAR

DUELL FURNITURE REMOVALS – FXD 1000Jason Duell of Duell’s Furniture Removal has entered his brand new FXD 1000.

Just recently delivered, the new truck has already become a star of the company fleet.

“The new FXD is a very powerful unit, the truck’s power output (257 kW @ 2,000 RPM) makes it ideal for carrying a large load and the GCM of 36,000 kg is ideal for the heavy deliveries,” Jason said.

“We transport everything from your standard home furniture, to boats, cars and even aeroplanes, so we need all the power we can get.”

SPECIALIZED TOWING – FYJ 2000 Leaders in the industry for heavy haulage and interstate towing, Specialized Towing operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With so much time spent on the road, the team need a truck they can trust.

Specialized Towing’s new addition to their Isuzu fleet, an FYJ 2000, was purchased from Canberra Isuzu and staff say the automatic transmission makes it a pleasure to drive and it handles the biggest of tasks with ease.

TOMMY THE TOY TRUCK – NPS 300 Tommy the Toy Truck is an Isuzu NPS 300, a go-anywhere motor home with plenty of power. Proud owners, the Myers, took Tommy on the Canning Stock Route, Jenkins, Oodnadatta and Birdsville Tracks. Stopped for a bath at the local bore, they noticed this photo opportunity.

ULTIMATE TOWING – FRD 600Steve Wilson and his business Ultimate Towing service Melbourne have entered Truck of the Year with their slick-looking FRD 600 Tilt Tray. The truck covers around 1,500 km a week and in Steve’s own words, “This is by far the best truck I have ever owned.

“I can’t believe how quiet it is and how comfortable it is as well.”

The FRD 600 is Steve’s third Isuzu.

VALE FAMILY – FRR 600 Naomi Vale has entered her Isuzu FRR 600 crew cab, with its demountable, slide-on motorhome. The slide-on lifts off via remote controlled electric legs, allowing the truck to be used both as a tray truck work vehicle and the ultimate massive, luxury motorhome.

“The truck has the perfect combination of power and comfort, allowing us to tow our boat and travel in style,” Naomi said.

OAC TRANSPORT – FSR 700 Leigh Campbell of OAC Transport purchased his first Isuzu, an FSR 700, in June 2015. The truck completes an approximate 800 km round trip, between Hamilton and Portland in Victoria, five to six days a week.

“I run the truck overnight hauling goods for Toll Priority,” Leigh said.

“The truck currently has 105,000 km on the clock and I’m extremely happy with its performance.”
