As you kneel to speak with your Lord, it seems as though

everything you have to do appears vividly before your minds

eye. You see especially how much there is to do, and how

urgent it is that it be done, at least some of it. As these

thoughts occur, you become more and more restless. You try to

keep your thoughts collected and to speak with God but you

succeed only for a moment now and then, The time on your

knees is just that much time wasted, Then you stop praying.

The enemy has won a very neat victory! (Hallesby 1931)

It was Roland Bainton who suggested the motto

for the Meditation Library at the retreat center,

Holden Village. The motto is Read as slowly as

you can. The sin of impatient haste breaks down

our communication line with one another, with

ourselves, with the books we read, and certainly

with the Scriptures and with God in prayer.

As slowly as you can. Think about this when you

take your time for prayer. How incongruous to use

such a phrase when we all know how organized

and busy our lives are! We decide to take specific

hour in our day, or part of it, for prayer. What

happens? Hallesby had experienced this and

    described it well.

How can we recapture our prayer post so

obviously under the enemys attacks? We need to

learn, little by little, to let every thought be captive

to Christ; let it happen! In Philippians Paus has

this strong conclusion to his advice on the attitude

for prayer. Halleby reminds us of this verse. And

the peace of God, which passes all understanding,

will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ

    Jesus (Phil 4:7).

When we read the Scripture as an entrance to

prayer, communication begins again. For Anselm,

the medieval bishop of Canterbury, reading

Scripture meant absorbing a text until it becomes a

prayer. This meant for Anselm that prayer was

simple in style for all believers, but costing not less

    than everything.

For this old medieval saint, prayer happens when

we know inwardly as well as objectively that we are

helpless, needing God: Come now, little man,

turn aside for a while from your daily employment,

escape for a moment the tumult of your thoughts,

put aside your weighty cares, let your burdensome

distractions wait, free yourself awhile f o rGod and rest awhile

    in Him (Anslem,

    1973)

    May our good God

    bless you all,

    With prayerful regards,

    Mothy Achen
