Talkabout April / May 2
I know I’ve said it before but time flies and Easter has already been and gone.. April and May are ahead and there‘s lots on the calendar. We are including a calendar of all the “happenings” at the Multiservice Hub so that you can see what is on for the next two months. I have had a sore leg after surgery and it makes you appreciate those people who make an effort to help you. My daughter came down from Cairns on Sunday and we went out and I had a roast dinner, which when you live alone you never have, and it was lovely. I also feel our weather is a joy to go out in—just nice! This issue we have pickle and chutney recipes for a change so I hope you enjoy these. Sincerely, Gwen

Join ‘The Snails’ Heart Foundation walking
group
Join The Snails walking group at Warrina Lakes Botanical Gardens every Friday morning starting at 7am. The Snails walking group is suitable for people of all abilities. It is for anyone who wants to be more active, have fun and socialise at the same time. Our aim is to help people be more active through gentle walking. With The Snails, you can walk at your own pace, be it with a wheelie walker, walking stick or without any aids. The group meets for about half an hour, and in that time there’s plenty of room for a chat. There’s bound to be someone who walks at the same speed as you, so you don’t need to worry about going slowly. We also stop and have a break for those who want to rest for a short time. If you’re wanting to get out of the house and move more, but need help to get motivated, joining a group is a great way to go about it. Research shows being regularly active throughout life is one of the most effective ways to improve health. Walking is a free and low impact exercise everyone can enjoy. Walking regularly can help you feel stronger, more energetic and happier with your quality of life. The Snails walking group is run by the Heart Foundation and Innisfail Primary Health. For more
Seniors Legal and Support Service
The Seniors Legal and Support Service provides free legal advice and support to seniors who are at risk of experiencing elder abuse or financial exploitation. Elder abuse is any act within a relationship of trust which results in harm to an older person. It includes physical, verbal, financial and emotional abuse, as well as neglect from trusted people such as family, friends, neighbours and informal carers. Funded by the Department of Communities, the Seniors Legal and Support Service is staffed by a solicitor and a social worker, providing a tailored and more holistic response to the needs of older people in difficult situations. Assistance that can be provided by the Service includes legal advice, some court support, short-term counselling and advocacy. The service provides face-to-face or phone appointments on the second Wednesday of every month at the Innisfail Community Support Centre. Appointments can be made by phoning 4031 7179 or 1800 650 931, Monday to Friday 9am – 4pm.

Nothing had prepared us for the reaction of orang-utans to the rain.
We were on the third day of our wonderful orang-utan adventure in the Tanjan Puting National Park in
Kalimantan and had already had one experience at the feeding platform at the Camp Leakey Research
Station on the previous day. We had spent the morning hiking through the rain forest with our guide, Muk.
The track had led us through a swamp on a disintegrating boardwalk so we both already had very wet feet
as the wooden planks had frequently just disappeared into the water and we had no option but to wade.
Luckily the temperature was in the low thirties so we felt soggy but warm and we had a most agreeable
day so far. We had seen lots of interesting plants and fungi, heard and seen the beautiful Asian Paradise
Flycatcher (snow white with a blue head and a long tail), and had been able to watch, from a distance, a
group of enchanting leaf-eating monkeys as they made their way through the trees. The most exciting
encounter had been with a large female orang-utan and her baby who was known to be aggressive. This
had necessitated a rapid and precarious retreat along the boardwalk while our guide discouraged her with
large stick until she had moved on and we could resume our walk.
Now it was afternoon feeding time and the monsoon rains were threatening to move in. Having lived in
West Papua and then Innisfail for ten years we were not particularly concerned, so we grabbed our rain
jackets and set off barefoot for the fifteen minute walk to the feeding station as we already knew what the
track was like. Our guide had warned us that the orang-utans hate rain and they might not make an
appearance if it was raining as there was plenty of other food for them in the forest. When we arrived at
the feeding station there was already quite a gathering of other tourists, including a chap with a huge
camera lens, most of whom obviously had no idea how sudden and heavy a tropical downpour could be. We

soon heard the sound of orang-utans moving through the trees behind us and a couple of females, carrying
young, arrived and moved into the trees near the platform. Shortly afterwards the rangers from the
research station arrived with their load of rambutans and bananas, calling loudly as they came to let the
animals know that lunch was on its way. They swept the old fruit skins from the platform and deposited the
new feast.
There was a flurry of excited whispers and camera activity from the awed tourists as we watched two adult
females (actually a mother and daughter), each with a baby, climb on to the platform and start tucking into
the fruit with great relish. We were further entertained by the antics of a long-limbed gibbon, stealing
bananas from under the great apes’ noses and a beautiful white-striped squirrel doing the same. Then we
heard a familiar noise, the train-like approach through the forest of a monsoon downpour. As the rain
poured down, the younger adult retreated up a tree with her infant, gathering branches on the way, which
she proceeded to hold over her head as a somewhat ineffectual umbrella. The older female was obviously
miserable in the rain but could not bear to leave the table until she had finished eating and she sat there,
with her baby, getting wetter and wetter. Then I noticed that one of the rangers, ignoring the rain himself,
had started to gather a bunch of leafy branches. He proceeded to pass them to the mother like a large
green bouquet and she nonchalantly took it from him and deposited the whole bunch on her head. She
placidly continued with her meal, stopping every now and then to readjust her “rain-hat” as the baby
peered out from between the dripping leaves. I was almost moved to tears and now I know what orang-
utans do in the rain.

Beside the railway station near where my daughter lives in Yeronga there was an old
derelict shop that nobody seemed able to make good use of. It was rather cute and old
fashioned, reminding me of other times, and I wished someone would do it up and give it
some tender loving care. Occasionally, when I was visiting my daughter, I would see something in the window that somebody was trying to sell and at other times there might
be graffiti or signs that someone had broken into the building.
Imagine my surprise and delight when I visited my daughter in the middle of last year, to
find the shop beautifully painted and very much in use. Adding to my delight was a sign announcing that the old shop is now the Yeronga Community Centre. Of course I had to
pay a visit and was warmly welcomed by a group participating in painting and handcrafts
activities.
I was told that the need for the Centre grew out of the 2011 Brisbane floods that had
destroyed so much and caused hardship for those living in the Yeronga area. Hanging on the wall was a quilt made by those who had suffered in the event.
I was able to share some of the experiences of our Support Centre with a view to
encouraging those participating in this new community centre about the future
possibilities for their brand new Community Centre. They told me of the support they receive from their parent centre in West End and their plans for expanding activities to
include different age groups and a garden in the area behind the shop.
When I visited again in December the participants had been busy making Christmas gifts
and the garden had been started. There is a playgroup running as well as the craft group
and a weekly morning tea for seniors.
If any readers who have friends or relations living in that part of Brisbane please tell them
about the Yeronga Community Centre where they should contact Fiona or Melinda. The
Centre is at 4 Killarney Street. The phone number is 3848 2285 and their email address is

Talkabout April / May 8
Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month began in 1992 and is held during the month of May each year to raise community awareness and promote a clear message that domestic and family violence will not be tolerated in our communities. Fact: Women are more likely to be killed in their own home by their partner than anywhere else or by anyone else. (Taken from Domestic Violence in Australia – An overview of the issues – Parliament of Australia) All people have the right to be free from violence and to be safe in their relationships. Reducing domestic and family violence will take ongoing commitment by government, the non government sector, private industry, communities and you the individual.
Within My Wildest DreamsWithin My Wildest Dreams
A child makes a statement, in shock you turn your backs.
I don’t want to hear it – that child needs some smacks.
You can’t listen nor can you see the bruises deep inside.
If you would just listen you’d hear the horrors that they hide.
They have no one to run to; they have no place to go.
This is all they’ve ever had, this is all they know.
That is Mum and Dad, they love them with all their heart.
They don’t want to be scared but they don’t want to part.
Oh Yeah! They have the help line, they have child safety teams.
Yes it’s all so damn easy, within their wildest dreams…
A sound comes to your ears; it’s that woman down the street.
You just turn your music up and you listen to the beat.
Thinking surely to yourself, ‘She’s mad, she chooses to stay.’
She always smiles and says, “Hello”; well she did the other day.
I hear she got an order from the men in blue.
She’ll be right, she’s got paper, and she can waive it too.
He doesn’t want to hit her but he does again and again
Until there is no more inside, the anger has an end..
Then in the news I see she’s broken, yet all I heard was screams
The streets become all so peaceful, within your wildest dreams.
They say that 80% of murders in this country we hold so dear.
Are due to domestic violence – statistics each one of us should fear
Should we bury our heads, interfere or should we call the cops?
Maybe just sit here forever or at least until it stops.
Ask the men in town to say no, it’s enough; it’s time to get irate.
Scream out.. “It’s not on no more” to your son, brother and mate..
What do we do to help wipe out these horrible and ugly scenes?
Or is this just a fantasy within my wildest dreams….

Talkabout April / May 9
In Your Honour
Unselfishly, you left your fathers and your mothers, You left behind your sisters and your brothers.
Leaving your beloved children and wives, You put on hold, your dreams—your lives.
On foreign soil, you found yourself planted To fight for those whose freedom you granted.
Without your sacrifice, their cause would be lost But you carried onward, no matter the cost. Many horrors you had endured and seen.
Many faces had haunted your dreams. You cheered as your enemies littered the ground;
You cried as your brothers fell all around. When it was over, you all came back home,
Some were left with memories to face all alone; Some found themselves in the company of friends
As their crosses cast shadows across the land. Those who survived were forever scarred
Emotionally, physically, permanently marred. Those who did not now sleep eternally
‘Neath the ground they had given their lives to keep free. With a hand upon my heart, I feel The pride and respect;
My reverence is revealed in the tears that now Stream down my upturned face
As our flag waves above you, in her glory and grace. Freedom was the gift that you unselfishly gave
Pain and death was the price that you ultimately paid. Every day, I give my utmost admiration
To those who had fought to defend our nation.
