PROGRAM OVERVIEW: The 2015 Resident Boot Camp was a two-day course that addressed basic knowledge and skills needed for first-year fellows in adult or pediatric pulmonary and/or critical care medicine programs. The course focused on topics and procedures that internal medicine residents may have had little or some exposure to, but which are essential to success as a first-year fellow. The 2015 Boot Camp was attended by 140 in-coming fellows who had matched into a pulmonary or critical care fellowship program beginning July 2015 and featured over 85 faculty teachers!

The 2015 Boot Camp was supported by in-kind grants from Bryan Corporation, CareFusion Corporation, FUJIFILM SonoSite, Inc., Hamilton Medical, Inc., Micro Direct, Inc., Olympus Corporation of the Americas, ResMed, Richard Wolf Medical Instruments Corp., Teleflex Incorporated, University of Colorado Denver Department of Anesthesiology, and Verathon.

The DetailsOBJECTIVES: The ATS Resident Boot Camp was a two-day course for in-coming first-year adult and pediatric fellows, which includes large group lectures, small breakout sessions and skill-based workshops. Participation in the ATS Resident Boot Camp allowed new fellows to:• Acquire knowledge of basic techniques and principles of mechanical ventilation, airway management, and

bronchoscopy (indications, techniques, and limitations);• Attain skills in vascular, thoracic, and pleural ultrasound image acquisition for ultrasound guided procedures and

diagnosis (pneumothorax, thoracentesis, line placement, right ventricular dilation/dysfunction, volume status);• Improve knowledge base in cardiopulmonary physiology; and• Develop strategies to successfully manage common clinical emergencies encountered as a fellow.

OUTCOMES:• 100% of participants ranked the content of the course as “excellent or good”.• 100% of participants ranked adherence to course objectives as “excellent or good”.

QUICK FACTS• 140 attendees attended Boot Camp• 140 attendees received a travel stipend from the ATS to attend the Boot Camp • Over 85 faculty teachers participated to maximize individualized attention and small-group learning

“ATS Resident Boot Camp provided me with amazing experience to prepare me for fellowship. Being able to get hands-on experience during various workshops on ultrasound-guided procedures, airway management, reading PFT and performing bronchoscopy and EBUS prior to my fellowship was invaluable. I’m very thankful to the sponsors and teaching faculty for the opportunity.”

“I was very glad I had the chance to participate in the Boot Camp at the ATS meeting for residents who will start pulmonary and critical care fellowships. This gave me a very good introduction into pulmonary and critical care medicine. In particular, I enjoyed the workshops on bronchoscopy and using endobronchial ultrasound during bronchoscopic procedures. I also liked the didactic sessions on the most common problems in pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine. I think this program has helped me start my fellowship with more confidence.”

“The Resident Boot Camp helped me in two major ways - allay my anxieties on the knowledge and skill-set prior to fellowship, convincing me that I can do this; and teaching me things where my abilities were not well developed, thereby making me well-rounded! Would recommend this very highly to all final-year residents seeking to enter Pulm/CC/Sleep fellowships.”

“Thank you for the opportunity to be part of the Boot Camp. I really feel that it gave me a great foundation to start my training as a fellow. My co-fellow and I actually came back from the boot camp and told our program director that every first-year fellow should attend the boot camp prior to starting fellowship.”

“The ATS Resident Boot Camp was amazing--it not only helped me feel prepared for fellowship but it was tons of fun too! The lectures, workshops, and break out sessions were more than I could have asked for. I gained skills that made me more confident that first day of fellowship.”
