Ó 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. 1. Introduction In a recent paper, our group proposed a new method for synthe- sizing nanosized lithium iron phosphate [1]. Despite its small par- ticle size (ca. 80 nm in diameter), the material exhibited poor electrochemical performance owing to its lack of conductivity. Post-treatment of the nano-LiFePO 4 with in-situ-formed copper yielded a nanocomposite with acceptable performance under a C/ 10 regime (80 mA h g 1 in capacity over at least 50 cycles). When copper was introduced by manually grinding the metal and the phosphate we obtained better cycling properties. However, a deep study of the latter copper–phosphate composites revealed that copper introduces side reactions (copper oxidation and electrolyte solvent oxidation) in the system [2]. Under adequate conditions the effect of copper is beneficial and it encouraged our group to exploring other conductive additives with a view to alleviating the insulation problems of this nanosized phosphate. Based on pre- vious efforts in this direction by several research groups, we fo- cussed on preparing composites by using inexpensive techniques which were bound to provide reliable results. In this work, we ex- plored the use of carbon and metal deposition systems, commonly used to prepare samples prior to their examination by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The species chosen for deposition were carbon and gold (the latter on the grounds of its availability in the SEM laboratory). In order to compare the results with previously reported data [3,4] we prepared an additional composite materials, carbon coated LiFePO 4 obtained by mechanochemical activation and pyrolysis of an organic precursor (typically a sucrose). The electrochemical performance of the composites is discussed in terms of the additive distribution. 2. Experimental Lithium iron phosphate was obtained as reported elsewhere [1]. LiFePO 4 was finely dispersed on aluminium foil prior to coating. For this purpose, phosphate particles were ultrasonicated in ace- tone, dropped on aluminium and finally transferred to an oven at 40 °C. This procedure was repeated several times until a deposit of 20–30 mg of phosphate was obtained. Carbon was evaporated by using a BIORAD-E5600 unit at 35 mA for 12 s (6 s + 6 s). Gold was sputtered with a BALTEC SCD-005 coater at 34 mA for 160 s, which produced a coating of theoretical thickness 25 nm. A work- ing distance of 50 mm was used in both cases. These two samples were named C v –LiFePO 4 and Au v –LiFePO 4 , respectively. Finally, the C mc –LiFePO 4 sample was prepared by mixing sucrose with the phosphate in a C:phosphate weight ratio 5:95 and subsequently heating at 600 °C in vacuo for 30 min. For X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, samples were prepared as pellets. Spectra were obtained on a Physical 0022-0728/$ - see front matter Ó 2009 Elsevier B.V. We examined the use of two conductive additives (C and Au) to boost the performance of lithium ironphosphate as a positive electrode material for lithium ion batteries. The phosphate was prepared by usinga new, fast synthetic method that provides nanosized particles. Carbon and gold were sputtered on LiFe-PO4. Additional sample was an intimate mixture of carbon and phosphate by mechanochemical–pyroli-tical synthesis. Although the voltammetric tests revealed that the addition of these conductive materialsexpedited electron transfer kinetics, the effect on galvanostatic cycled cells was found to depend largelyon the nature and way of introduction of the additive (carbon or metal). Surface analysis and electro-chemical impedance spectroscopy on cycled electrodes provided a better understanding of the specialbehaviour of the carbon and gold composites obtained by sputtering.

1. Introduction

In a recent paper, our group proposed a new method for synthe-sizing nanosized lithium iron phosphate [1]. Despite its small par-ticle size (ca. 80 nm in diameter), the material exhibited poorelectrochemical performance owing to its lack of conductivity.Post-treatment of the nano-LiFePO4 with in-situ-formed copperyielded a nanocomposite with acceptable performance under a C/10 regime (80 mA h g�1 in capacity over at least 50 cycles). Whencopper was introduced by manually grinding the metal and thephosphate we obtained better cycling properties. However, a deepstudy of the latter copper–phosphate composites revealed thatcopper introduces side reactions (copper oxidation and electrolytesolvent oxidation) in the system [2]. 2. Experimental

Lithium iron phosphate was obtained as reported elsewhere [1].LiFePO4 was finely dispersed on aluminium foil prior to coating.For this purpose, phosphate particles were ultrasonicated in ace-tone, dropped on aluminium and finally transferred to an oven at40 �C. This procedure was repeated several times until a depositof 20–30 mg of phosphate was obtained. Carbon was evaporatedby using a BIORAD-E5600 unit at 35 mA for 12 s (6 s + 6 s). For X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, sampleswere prepared as pellets. Spectra were obtained on a Physical

Electronics PHI 5700 spectrometer, using non-monochromatic MgKa radiation (300 W, 15 kV, 1253.6 eV) and a multi-channel detec-tor. Spectra were recorded in the constant pass energy mode at29.35 eV, using a 720 lm diameter analysis area. Binding energy(BE) values were referred to the C 1s peak (284.8 eV) from theadventitious contamination layer during data processing of theXPS spectra. All spectra were fitted to Gauss–Lorentz curves in or-der to more accurately determine the binding energy of the differ-ent element core levels. The error in BE was estimated to be ca.±0.1 eV. For recording of XPS spectra, the pellets were rapidlytransferred to the preparation chamber of the XPS spectrometer.In this way, exposure of the sample to air was minimized.

Electrochemical measurements were carried out by using anelectrode mixture consisting of active material, carbon black andTeflon in a 85:12:3 proportion by weight. The working electrodeconsisted of a stainless steel grid onto which approximately 3 mgof mixture was pressed. The electrolyte used was 1 M LiClO4 in1 M PC as solvent. Both the reference electrode and the counterelectrode consisted of a lithium disk. Potentiostatic cycles werecarried out on swagelock� cells in a MacPile II (BioLogic) potentio-stat under a regime of 10 mV 2 min�1. Galvanostatic dischargeswere performed on a Arbin system, using CR2032 coin cells at C/10 (i.e. one lithium mole was transferred in 10 h). The impedanceof the cells was measured in 3-electrode cells containing lithiumstick as reference electrode, platinum wire as counter electrodeand the phosphate as working electrode. Measurements were car-ried out over the frequency range 88 kHz–3 mHz using a Solartron1255 frequency response analyser coupled to a Solartron 1470 bat-tery test system. The excitation signal was 10 mV peak to peak. Theequilibrium potential was assumed to be reached when the drift inopen-circuit voltage remained under 1 mV h�1. The impedancediagrams were fitted by using the software Zplot� from ScribnerAssociates.

3. Results and discussion

3.1. Sample characterization

As discussed elsewhere [1], the synthetic method allows LiFe-PO4 nanoparticles 80 nm in average diameter and with reasonablywell-defined edges and good crystallinity to be obtained in a sim-ple, fast manner. Particles are better defined than those providedby ‘‘chimie douce” methods [5] or by solid-state reaction at550 �C [6]. Also, coating had no effect on the cell dimensions ofthe phosphate. Gold and carbon were presumably in smallamounts and particle sizes, so they were not detected by XRD.

In order to examine the presence and chemical state of the con-ductive additives, we performed XPS measurements on the twotreated samples and compared their spectra with that for pristineLiFePO4. Table 1 shows the binding energies (BE) of the constituentelements. No significant shifts were observed with different treat-ments in any sample, the BE values of the P and Fe 2p peaks beingconsistent with that for the phosphate group [7] and Fe2+, respec-tively [8]. Also, P/Fe ratios were close to 1 except for the Cmc–LiFe-

PO4 sample, which exhibited a value of 1.42. As noted above, noiron phosphide entities were identified by XRD.

Fig. 1 shows the C 1s spectra for the LiFePO4, Cv–LiFePO4 andCmc–LiFePO4 samples. As can be seen, all were quite similar and fit-ted four components. The main component was observed at284.8 eV and arose from adventitious C together with C comingfrom the coating process, as suggested by the increased intensityprovided by the Cv–LiFePO4 and Cmc–LiFePO4 samples relative tothe pristine sample. The other two peaks were weak and assignedto C bound to O (as C–OH, peak at 286.2 eV, or C–O–C, peak at288.2 eV). The fourth contribution was located at 287.2 eV and as-signed to C@O bonds in carboxyl and/or carbonate groups formedby surface carbonation. The latter signal may have originated fromthe presence of traces of the organic precursors used in the syn-thetic procedure, at least at surface level [1,3]. This signal was lessmarked for the Cmc–LiFePO4 sample since the compound was sub-jected to a second thermal treatment in order to pyrolyse the su-crose and such a treatment reduces the amount of organicresidues. The C content of LiFePO4 and Auv–LiFePO4 as measuredby elemental analysis was negligible (0.00%); therefore, the carboncontent was actually very low. The carbon content of Cv–LiFePO4

was somewhat higher (0.15%). As expected, the Cmc–LiFePO4 sam-ple had a higher C content (close to 5%) than the other two.

One interesting finding was the presence of a high content ofmetal at the surface level of the Auv–LiFePO4 sample. Thus, theAu:Fe atomic ratios was 0.18:1, several times higher than thosebased on a limited deposition time in the case of Au. This revealsa preferential location of these phases on the surface of the phos-phate nanoparticles and can help to understand the electrochemi-cal properties of the AuLiFePO4 composite.

3.2. Electrochemical properties

Fig. 2 shows the two first voltammetric charge/discharge curvesfor the cells based on these nanomaterials. The shape is typical ofLiFePO4 and the peaks are consistent with the well-known reaction

LiFeIIPO4 () Liþ þ e� þ FeIIIPO4 ð1Þ

Table 2 shows the peak voltage values obtained. The oxidation peakfor pristine LiFePO4 was located at 3.59 V. The reverse reaction (i.e.the insertion of lithium into the heterosite structure) provided abroad peak at 3.27 V. The difference between both potentials, DEp,was 320 mV and exposes the kinetic limitations of this electrode,which are largely the results of its high resistivity (see, for example,Ref. [3]). Moreover, the intensity of the reduction peak (denoted byIc) was smaller than that for the oxidation peak (denoted by Ia), asexpected for a slow transfer process. Therefore, the reversibility ofthe electrochemical process in this compound is limited.

The peaks for Cv–LiFePO4 and Auv–LiFePO4 were weaker thanthat for the pristine material. However, the potential difference

(DEp) decreased from 320 mV to 260 mV (for carbon composite)and to 230 mV (for the golden composite). Somehow, both addi-tives favour the electron transfer (through decreased polarizationbetween the oxidation and reduction peaks), but seemingly hin-ders the lithium extraction/insertion process. After one cycle, inthe three systems the value of DEp decreases, which seeminglyindicates that first cycle activates the electrochemistry of the sys-tem. However, in all the cases, peak intensities decrease more orless. Specially, the Auv–LiFePO4 profile underwent dramaticchanges in intensity (Fig. 2). The Cmc–LiFePO4 cells exhibited a pe-culiar behavior. Thus, the oxidation and reduction peaks weresharper, their intensities were very high, and the Ia/Ic ratio wasclose to one. Therefore, this carbon coating on the phosphate par-ticles was effective and increased the electrochemical activity ofthe material. However, DEp was close to 280 mV, which is higherthan the value for the composites prepared in this work. In fact,a similar value was obtained by Franger et al. for Cmc–LiFePO4 pre-pared from micrometric phosphate and glucose heated at 600 �C[4]. Therefore, our DEp value is typical for composites obtained un-der these synthesis conditions and independent of the particle sizeof the pristine phosphate. As can be seen in Fig. 2, DEp decreased to220 mV in the second cycle. A similar decrease was previously ob-served in other composites with similar nature [9]. On further cy-cling, the peaks retained their positions but decreased in intensity;however, they were still more intense than for the other compos-ite-based cells. Therefore, the role played by the additive isstrongly dependent on its chemical nature.

Fig. 3 shows some selected galvanostatic charge/dischargecurves recorded at a C/10 rate and Table 2 lists some capacity val-ues. The capacities associated to the oxidation and reduction peaksin the first charge/discharge cycle decreased in the sequence Cmc–LiFePO4 > LiFePO4 > Auv–LiFePO4 > Cv–LiFePO4. The Cmc–LiFePO4

composite yielded 140 mA h g�1 in the first charge, consistent withpreviously reported [3,4]. The good electrochemical performanceof this composite is also reflected in Fig. 4, which shows the varia-tion of discharge capacity as a function of the number of cycles.After the second cycle, the discharge capacity of the Cmc–LiFePO4

cell levelled off at ca. 120 mA h g�1. Surprisingly, the worst per-formers were the coated samples (especially Auv–LiFePO4). Thecapacity delivered by these electrodes was even lower than thatof the untreated compound (Fig. 4).

These disparate results suggest that factors others than DEp areplaying a crucial role in the composite electrochemical perfor-mance. In order to get more information on their electrochemicalproperties cells were then cycled under galvanostatic conditionsand studied by ac-electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS).Fig. 5 shows the EIS spectra obtained for the four systems. For eas-ier viewing and discussion, the high-medium frequency region hasbeen magnified in the inset. The EIS diagrams of Auv–LiFePO4 andCmc–LiFePO4 show quite classical behaviour for insertion elec-trodes and can be described with a standard Randles equivalentcircuit [10]. At the opposite, LiFePO4 and Cv–LiFePO4 impedancespectra show a distortion, since we can clearly see the appearanceof another semi-circle, at high frequencies, correlated to the forma-tion of a new interface between the electrode/electrolyte. Thiscould be modelled by the electrical equivalent circuit containinga supplementary in series resistor–capacitor combination, corre-sponding to the presence of an adsorption film which would becomposed of lithium ions and electrolyte solvent molecules[11,12]. Guyomard [13] found air-exposed phosphate nanoparti-cles to contain a highly reactive layer consisting of LiOH or by-products containing Fe and/or P. On immersion in the electrolyte,such LiFePO4 nanoparticles developed an inorganic surface layerconsisting largely of a salt coming from the electrolyte decomposi-tion (LiF, LixPOyFz, etc). This film introduced a supplementary par-allel resistor–capacitor contribution [13]. Our spectra, however,were better fitted with the adsorbed film model.

Obviously, our LiFePO4 nanoparticles, whether pristine or coatedby sputtered carbon, are reactive towards the electrolyte. This, aspreviously suggested by Guyomard [13], may have resulted fromexposure to air. In fact, their reactivity can be efficiently reducedby gold deposition and mechanochemical carbon coating. In the for-mer case, deposited gold acts as a barrier between air and phosphate,

thereby hindering growth of the initial reactive layer. Besides, thethin carbon layer typical of mechanochemical activation protectsthe particles as soon as they start to form. On the other hand, LiFePO4

and Cv–LiFePO4 composites tend to form an adsorbed film.Table 3 shows various interfacial parameters obtained by fitting

the Nyquist plots. Consistent with the DEp value exhibited by Cmc–LiFePO4, its corresponding Rtc value was the highest (66 X). Con-versely, addition of carbon by evaporation is effective to decreasethe transfer charge resistance, Rtc, of LiFePO4, from 22 X to 18 X.This accounts for the decreased DEp value of this composite. Final-ly, the gold composite exhibited a higher Rtc value (28 X) than bothsystems, but also the lowest DEp. This is not surprising as for LiFe-PO4 and Cv–LiFePO4, there is an additional resistance associated tothe presence of the adsorption layer (Rads in Table 3), which ex-plains the higher values of DEp observed for both systems. More-over, the DEp is bigger for the pristine phosphate, in agreementwith its higher value of Rads.

Additional information can be extracted by analysing the low-frequency region, where the Warburg domain, associated to lithiumdiffusion inside the phosphate particles, occurs. The region, definedby an angle close to 45�, appeared at higher frequencies in the Cmc–LiFePO4 composite. This indicates that lithium diffusion is faster inthis material, probably by virtue of an increased—and more effi-cient—electronic conductivity that simultaneously enhances ionicconductivity inside the host lattice as previously found by otherauthors [4,14]. In fact, although Cmc–LiFePO4 exhibited the highestRtc value by effect of the carbon coating developing not only ontothe surface as in Cv–LiFePO4, but also between grains, this coatingprocess results in efficient electron percolation between particles.

After one cycle, the Nyquist plots shown in Fig. 5 reveal impor-tant information. All the diagrams, except for Cmc–LiFePO4, containan important contribution in the high-middle frequencies range.The best model for fitting the plots include a parallel resistor–capacitor combination [12,15] that suggests the presence of anelectronic insulator based on a solid electrolyte interface, SEI. Thismodel is confirmed by comparing the values observed for doublelayer and film capacitances (Cdl >> Cfilm). The correspondinginterfacial parameters are collected in Table 3. After one cycle, Rtc

has greatly increased for all these samples. Pristine LiFePO4

shows the highest value, 130 X. The rank is as follows: RLiFePO4 >RCv–LiFePO4 > RAuv–LiFePO4. DEp values observed in the 2nd cycle(Table 2) follows the same trend. Besides, the SEI layers add a resis-tance (Rfilm, Table 3) to the systems with very similar values. InCmc–LiFePO4, we found no such contribution in the high–middlefrequency range, which suggests that this system resists the forma-tion of an SEI [4,16]. Moreover, Rtc was slightly different from thatin the OCV state, which is consistent with its enhanced cyclingproperties.

3.3. Role of the additives

3.3.1. GoldOne of the most interesting results shown therein is that

introduction procedure and nature of the additive strongly influ-

ences the electrochemical performance of the composites. Firstly,let examine the Auv–LiFePO4 system. Regarding the cycling vol-tammograms of Fig. 2 and the different electrochemical parame-ters collected in Tables 2 and 3, it seems evident that thissystem must undergo a certain polarisation in the first cycle.However the electrochemical parameters collected cannotexplain satisfactorily its poor cycling properties, even if we con-sider the combination of two electronic drawbacks, i.e. the initialRtc and the presence of an insulating solid electrolyte film. Theorigin of this behaviour is unclear since Au is a very good elec-tronic conductor. The main difference lay in the way the conduc-tor was incorporated and might account for the disparateelectrochemical response observed. In the evaporation modeused to add the electronic conductor, the phosphate particleswill be coated with a layer of C or Au that must be crossed byLi ions during the insertion/deinsertion process. This barriermay hinder the electrochemical reaction, as reflected in the de-creased discharge capacity delivered by the cell.

In order to shed more light on the gold composite, we recordedXPS depth profiles for carbon, iron, phosphorus, oxygen and goldby etching the surface with Ar+ and determined the ensuing sur-face atomic ratios. Fig. 6 shows the variation of the surface compo-sition as a function of the etching time. Adventitious carbon wasremoved from the surface within few minutes (about 5 min). Be-sides, the variation of the iron, phosphorus and oxygen surfacecontents was barely dependent on the sputtering time, and theirrelative concentrations were similar even after 100 min. Inset inFig. 6 shows the variation of the XPS spectra for Au 4f as a functionof the sputtering time. The intensity of the gold peak decreasedwith increasing the exposure time to Ar+; however, more than100 min was needed to decrease its relative surface content from1.2% to 0.18%. These results defer from those recently reportedfor LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 prepared in the pellet form and submitted togold evaporation. The gold content measured at the surface levelunder the same sputtering conditions was markedly higher

(around 40%); after a few minutes of etching, however, the goldcontent dropped to negligible levels [17].

These results warrant several comments. First, such a low goldcontent in our composite indicates that coating of the phosphateparticles is incomplete. Second, the fact that some gold remainedafter 100 min etching is consistent with the presence of isolatedgold nanoclusters. Therefore, our samples contain gold more or lessstrongly bound to the LiFePO4 particles and also as uniformly dis-persed nanoclusters. Both gold forms, film and nanocluster, pre-vent the formation of an adsorbed film onto the phosphateparticles. However, access of Li ions to those sites of the phosphatesurface in contact with gold must be hindered, decreasing the lith-ium diffusion. Also, gold-coated phosphate is less substantial thanmechanochemically deposited carbon; also, its overall electronicconductivity is certainly lower. All these features account for thepoor performance of Auv–LiFePO4.

3.3.2. CarbonThe properties of the carbon layer (local distribution, aggrega-

tion, texture, porosity and active sites) must differ in the Cmc–LiFe-PO4 and Cv–LiFePO4 samples by effect of the incorporation methodused. In fact, they were found to affect the reactivity of the com-posite particles against the electrolyte solution. Moreover, theintroduction procedures led to variably strong bonds between car-bon and the phosphate surfaces.

Pyrolytic carbon forms stronger bonds with the phosphatedue to the thermal conditions used in the reaction (600 �C); thus,it produces a smooth conductive carbon coating [3,4,18] ontoevery particle, thereby facilitating penetration of lithium ions.As a result, the Cmc–LiFePO4 composite obtained by sucrosepyrolysis performed quite well. Experimentally, we found onecycle to be needed to condition the cell, decrease the initialDEp and keep Rtc constant. At OCV, the Cmc–LiFePO4 compositeexhibited a higher Rtc value than did Cv–LiFePO4; however, theformer coating was more efficient upon cycling by effect of itsallowing efficient electron percolation between particles. Thefirst cycle capacity provided by both composites (101 mA h g�1

for Cv–LiFePO4 and 139 mA h g�1 for Cmc–LiFePO4) confirms thisassumption. In fact, more active material was involved in theelectrochemical insertion/deinsertion process when the carboncoating surrounded every particle than merely the grains nearthe electrode surface. Finally, this coating additionally protectsthe phosphate from reaction with the electrolyte to form an ad-sorbed film or an SEI.

The case of Cv–LiFePO4 composite is certainly curious, as itsimpedance plots revealed much lower resistor terms (Rtc, Rads,Rfilm) than for the pristine system. Such low values are a resultof the formation of a conductive surface that increases the elec-tronic conductivity of the particles at the electrolyte/electrodeinterface. However, whether a uniform carbon coating is formedonto all phosphate particles with the evaporation method used isarguable. In fact, composite particles exposed to the electrolyteat OCV developed an adsorbed film since, unlike Cmc–LiFePO4,no protective carbon film was formed. One can therefore expectpoor electron percolation between the grains, which is consistentwith the observed electrochemical performance. Otherwise, theevaporated carbon obtained at room temperature is only physi-sorbed onto the phosphate particles of the Cv–LiFePO4 compos-ite. Therefore, one can assume that a certain amount of thisevaporated, weakly bound, physisorbed carbon, can be removedupon cycling due to a solvent-promoted swelling. It also explainssatisfactorily the initial electronic properties of the Cv–LiFePO4

composite – when the totality of the evaporated carbon is pres-ent in the system – and the continuous capacity fading observedin these cells.

4. Conclusions

This work is a preliminary study about the use of simple coatersor metallizers for boosting the electronic properties of LiFePO4

based electrodes. Nanosized lithium iron phosphates preparedvia a fast synthetic method exhibit a modest electrochemical per-formance, mainly as a result of their lack of an effective electronicnetwork to maintain electrical conductivity during charge/dis-charge cycles. Evaporated carbon, sputtered gold and C obtainedby in-situ pyrolysis of sucrose were tested here as conductive addi-tives with a view to improving the poor electronic conductivity ofthe compound. Voltammetric cycles revealed that the three addi-tives boost the electron transfer kinetics. However, galvanostaticexperiments showed that only the mechanochemical/pyroliticaladdition of C increased cell capacity and the ability to retain it.EIS experiments confirmed that upon cycling, a solid electrolyteinterface is formed at the surfaces of LiFePO4, Cv–LiFePO4 andAuv–LiFePO4 samples, introducing an additional resistor, mean-while the surface of the Cmc–LiFePO4 composite is not prone tothe formation of the SEI.

Some of our findings were associated to the deposition proce-dure used and some to the chemical nature of the additive. Forexample, XPS measurements revealed that gold deposition doesnot ensure thorough coating of the phosphate particles with thismetal, but rather introduces disperse nanoclusters. This treatmenthinders diffusion of lithium ions and decreases the capacity as a re-sult. In fact, the carbon incorporation method used dictateswhether the electrochemical performance of carbon coated LiFe-PO4 samples is enhanced. Thus, while pyrolysing sucrose with LiFe-PO4 produces a smooth, porous, carbon coating strongly bound tothe phosphate particles, evaporation gives a compact, weaklybound carbon film. The advantageous electronic properties of thelatter composite are suppressed by poor electron percolation be-tween phosphate grains owing to their incomplete coating by car-bon and also to the weakness of C–LiFePO4 surface bonds, whichresult in the loss of carbon upon cycling.
