adventures and fun during the summer Nutrition program

Osceola County, FL - Combining laughter and the outdoors with friendship and adventure was the focus of the University of Florida/IFAS Extension Nutrition Education Program this summer which concluded this week.Approximately 40 new Girl Scouts

experienced fun and excitement with the nutrition education program at Osceola County Extension Services. The girls (kinder through 9th grade) engaged in nutrition activities and learned how to make healthier food choices (food groups to eat, nutrients in food, reading food labels, food safety and balancing calories with physical activity). Girls, mothers and staff burnt

calories doing Zumba with Zory Davila, a volunteer certified instructor. A parent stated how grateful she was of the program, “my daughter who is not a protein eater came home wanting to eat boiled eggs because she learned she needed protein food for her growth.”These children learned nutrition

concepts through exciting and interactive adventures. Program participants learned about choosing healthy beverages and water to keep their bodies hydrated, as well as about protein foods (meat, eggs, seafood) and the mystery of how bacteria grow in food. One of the most exciting

adventures involved food and nutrition in outer space. Steve Ernest, a former NASA

employee, encouraged children to make healthy food choices to have a healthy lifestyle and to study hard their Math and Science to become the engineers and astronauts of the future.

Kissimmee, FL - Un camión cisterna que transportaba combustible diesel y gasolina se volcó en la esquina de Hoagland Boulevard y Vine Street en Kissimmee el 5 de agosto, derramando miles de galones de combustible en la carretera y el drenaje pluvial.

Aproximadamente a las 11:00 a.m., la Policía de Kissimmee y los bomberos respondieron a Hoagland Boulevard y Vine Street, en referencia a un accidente de tránsito. Un camión cisterna no pudo realizar el viraje a Hoagland Blvd y se volcó en la acera. El tanque estaba derramando el combustible diesel y la gasolina en la carretera y en el drenaje pluvial. Tanker truck crash spilling fuel on Hwy 192Kissimmee, FL - A tanker truck

carrying diesel fuel and gasoline overturned at the corner of Hoagland Blvd and Vine Street in Kissimmee on August 5th, spilling thousands of gallons of fuel onto the roadway and into the storm drains.At approximately 11:00 a.m.,

Kissimmee police and fire responded to Hoagland Blvd and Vine Street in reference to a traffic crash. A tanker truck failed to negotiate the turn onto Hoagland Blvd and had over turned on the roadway. The

tanker was leaking diesel fuel and gasoline onto the roadway and into the storm drains. Kissimmee police immediately closed Vine Street in both directions from Bass Highway to Armstrong Blvd, while Kissimmee Fire began neutralizing the tanker situation.Local businesses were evacuated

along with residents from the nearby Heatherwood Apartment Community for precautionary measures. Evacuees were transported by the Parks, Recreation and Public Facilities

Department to the Kissimmee Civic Center to comfortably wait as the clean up was being conducted. Public Works Division worked

quickly to create a barrier in the storm drains preventing the spilled fuel from reaching Shingle Creek. Crews from Kissimmee Fire, Orange County Fire, Kissimmee Utility Authority, Florida Department of Emergency Management, Florida Department of Transportation, and Florida Department of Environmental Protection worked together to clean

up the 7,000 gallons of fuel that spilled from the truck. Ultimately the roads were reopened by 5:00 p.m. “Several city and state departments

worked seamlessly to neutralize this dangerous situation for the citizen of Kissimmee. The team worked quickly to protect the residents in the nearby area and the environment. The handling of is situation is a testament to the commitment the employees of the City of Kissimmee have to their community,” said Deputy City Manager Desiree Matthews.

Osceola County, FL - On July 31, 2013, the 2nd Osceola County Fugitive Safe Surrender Day was held at the Kissimmee Civic Center and 66 warrants were cleared.Individuals began arriving

prior to 8:00 a.m. star time and some traveled from out-of-state to resolve their court issues. Judge Stefania Jancewicz presided over the hearings.Osceola County Fugitive

Safe Surrender Day offered American citizens of legal residents with non-violent misdemeanor warrants the ability to turn themselves into

law enforcement and have heir cases resolved in a safe non-violent environment. Although the program has been successfully coordinated in cities across the nation, this one-day event was the second time a joint initiative has been coordinated in Osceola County.The project was comprised

of representative from the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court, Osceola County Government, Osceola County Correction Department, Osceola County Clerk of Court, Judicial Correction Services, Public Defender’s Office,

State Attorney’s Office, Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, Kissimmee Police Department and St. Cloud Police Department.Osceola County Fugitive

Safe Surrender Day was not an amnesty program, but offered favorable considerations from the court, often in the form of reduced fines, probation requirements or a new court date as an alternative to incarceration. The program allowed fugitives to take responsibility for their actions, stop running from the law and clear their outstanding warrants.

Conlon got laid off from her job — as an estimator for a heating-and air-conditioning supplier – she did what most Americans did during the depths of the Great Recession: She began sending out resumes for as many job postings as she could find.But Conlon, who’d, spent more than

15 years doing clerical work for AT&T and then another two years working in the construction field, couldn’t get a nibble. Frustrated, she began calling the companies about the positions she’d applied for. She posed the obvious question: What was wrong with my resume? The answer came quickly: You don’t have a college degree.So in 2009, in her mid-40s, Conlon

began her journey to college — an adventure that started at Valencia’s West Campus and has taken her to the top of the graduating class at the University of Central Florida.On Saturday, Aug. 3, Conlon

graduated from UCF summa cum laude —was one of a handful of students who’ve been selected to receive the Honor Medallion for Top Honors and sit onstage with UCF President John Hitt.It’s an accolade she never dreamed

of achieving, certainly when she couldn’t get a job as a receptionist four years ago. “I am absolutely gob smacked about receiving the Honor Medallion,” says Conlon.At UCF, Conlon earned a Bachelor

of Applied Science in Supervision and Administration, a business management degree. Now UCF plans to use her in its B.A.S. Youtube video, to illustrate how working adults with A.S. degrees can go back to college and earn a bachelor’s degree through UCF’s B.A.S. program.But Conlon, who wants to work in

the field of quality control, isn’t ready for her most excellent educational journey to end. She’s heading back to UCF in the fall — to start her master’s degree in industrial engineering.

La ceremonia de inauguración tuvo lugar en el Florida Baby Food Center, una tienda de comestibles WIC en Miami. El proyecto piloto en el Condado Miami-Dade se inició el 1 de julio como parte de la implantación de EBT que el estado está realizando para servir mejor a las familias necesitadas de la Florida.

En los próximos meses y hasta Junio de 2014 este sistema será implementado a lo largo del estado para reemplazar los cheques de papel. “El lanzamiento de hoy es un gran logro para las familias necesitadas de la Florida”, dijo Armstrong. “WIC EBT hace que sea más fácil conectar los alimentos nutritivos ofrecidos a través de WIC a resultados más saludables para los bebés, niños y mamás.”El evento reconoció como un hito

Miami, FL - State Surgeon General and Secretary of Health Dr. John Armstrong today joined with State Representative Jose Felix Diaz, District 116, and Florida Department of Health-Miami-Dade Administrator Dr. Lillian Rivera to publicly launch the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program’s transition to an electronic benefit transfer (EBT) system. Today’s ribbon cutting ceremony took place at Florida Baby Food Center, a WIC grocery store in Miami. A pilot project in Miami-Dade County began on July 1 as a part of the statewide rollout of EBT to better serve Florida’s families in need. In next months until June 2014,

this system will be implemented statewide and replace the paper checks. “Today’s launch is a great achievement for Florida’s families in need,” said Armstrong. “WIC EBT makes it easier to connect nutritious foods offered through WIC to healthier outcomes for babies, kids, and moms.” The event recognized a milestone

in that Florida was the first state to simultaneously implement a new WIC participant data system and bring EBT services online, accomplishing both projects in less than a year. The transition from paper checks to WIC EBT delivers benefits more efficiently to families as well as Florida’s 2,000 WIC authorized grocers. Paper checks will no longer be required and the electronic card will allow for faster checkout times and easier processing of benefits. With the EBT, Florida’s authorized

WIC grocers will see as much as a 90 percent reduction in processing costs. The new electronic accounts virtually eliminate the need for manual processing and WIC will be able to reimburse the grocer for foods purchased within one business day, significantly reducing the reimbursement time period.WIC is a federally funded program

that provides healthy food, as well as breastfeeding education and nutrition counseling to needy families. Florida’s WIC Program operates 220 sites throughout the state where families improve their diet and food choices with the assistance of licensed nutritionists and nutrition educators.
