I originally trained as a Health Educator (HE); before I went on to do a Master of Science degree in Public Health –Health Promotion at Leeds Metropolitan University. I worked as a HE with Masindi District Local Government for five years; during this period I partici-pated in a number of Public Health (PH) interventions and research projects dealing with HIV/AIDS being conducted by Ministry of Health Uganda. Among the famous PH interventions and HIV/AIDS research I participated on was the Uganda National HIV/AIDS Sero-Behavioural Survey of 2004, and the training of Village Health Team (VHT) members and rolling out of the VHT concept in Uganda. I joined Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) as a Teaching Assistant in the Fac-ulty of Health Sciences in 2008, an organisation I am still working with in the position of Lecturer. At UMU, I teach on a number of modules on Health Promotion and Health Service Management courses. One of the interesting modules I teach is Health System Re-search (HSR), were we involve the local communities in identifying their own health problems and generate solutions for them by using HSR as a tool. My current curiosity is in PH Training in Uganda, I am interested in ensuring that HSR helps us to answer the varied research questions inherent in PH Training.”

I am a Colombian physician currently enrolled in the Masters in Epidemiology program at Tropical Medi-cine Institute “Pedro Kouri” in Cuba. I am conducting the field work for my Master’s degree program with the International Center for Medical Research and Training (CIDEIM www.cideim.org.co) in Cali, Colombia through the Young Researcher Program of COLCIEN-CIAS, the national administrative department of sci-ence, technology and innovation. My thesis is focused on the development of the epidemiological component of the project: “”Evaluation of a mass dissemination program to promote community participation in the control of dengue transmission in the municipality of Buga, Valle del Cauca””. I believe that health is a right which is composed of different aspects that must converge for the same purpose. From my job in tropical medicine and its close relationship with public health, I want to work in improving the integration of alternative views related to infectious disease control; this includes considering social determinants of health in medical research to increase understanding and efficient decision-making. These efforts, in specific contexts, can ensure universal health coverage in our low and middle income countries.”

My PhD research focuses on the development of an effective knowledge translation model for a community-based household-level dietary intervention using community workers. I am particularly interested in expanding this area of work in future to include other major NCD risk factors in the interpretation of currently available scientific knowledge to develop sustainable models within the local cultural context using primary health care set-up or community mobilization. I am also interested in capturing the various costs related to NCDs at the individual / household level and the gender dynamics of the same. “

I am responsible for the coordination of all research pharmacy activities which include professional and administrative duties as well as oversight of the Pharmacy facilities. I am interested in the translation of knowledge into policy and practice, particularly implementation of research findings in health systems. Proven interventions have not been scaled up or properly implemented to achieve popula-tion level impact. I believe focus on implementation of known and proven interventions through well designed programmes would improve equity of health systems especially in resource-limited settings. “

I’m a Tanzanian female working in health research for the past 8 years. I’m an Epidemiologist (LSHTM, UK) with previous trainings in Planning and Manage-ment of Tropical Diseases Control Programmes (ITM, Belgium) and Dental Surgery degree (MUHAS, Tan-zania). My interest has mainly been in health systems research, particularly delivery of health care services relative to management of infectious and communi-cable diseases. I’ve always been keen to learn and understand the gaps of providing quality health care to population from the health providers’ perspec-tives. With the changes in disease profiles and rise in non-communicable diseases where they were not a major problem, enough emphasis should be placed in suitable implementation of scientific innovations and achievements to people who need them the most. I think, this can largely be achieved through understand-ing of health systems designed to deliver these innova-tions to their populations. With the current state of knowledge, I believe the world would have been a far better place if we play our parts right.”

BSc. (Nursing) by training, I am a young man interested in a career in public health research. I am currently working as a clinical instructor in the Faculty of Health Sciences, Great Lakes University of Kisumu. Specifically, I am involved in the teaching and mentoring of nurses, clinical officers and public health technicians in Maternal and Child Health (MCH), Rural Health Practice and decentralized district health systems. I am also involved in implementation of the “Community Strategy”, a community based approach developed by the Great Lakes University of Kisumu and adopted by the Ministry of Health. I am interested in approaches to improve the motivation of nurses and other health workers so as to retain them where they are needed most. Specifically, I would like to champion the concept that health worker motivation can be achieved through proper training and orienta-tion to local health problems, balanced with reason-able renumeration. “

I completed my medical training from the St. John’s Medical College in Bangalore, India in 2007. Since my student days I have been actively involved with the Health For All movement as part of the People’s Health Movement network. After graduation, I worked for two years as a Medical Officer at Tribal Health Ini-tiative, a community health program which served the Malavasi adivasi community in the Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu. My interest in community health led me create www.communityhealth.in, an online, collabora-tive resource on community health in India. I also have worked as a Research Assistant studying stigma and mental health as part of a joint collaboration between the University College London and Banyan Academy for Leadership in Mental Health in Chennai, India. My work experiences led to an interest in problems re-lated to the access to and interpretation of biomedical care by marginalized groups. I am currently enrolled as a graduate student in anthropology at Syracuse University, USA.

A Medical Doctor by profession, graduated from University of Indonesia. I’ve recently acquired Master in Public Health Disease Control (MPH-DC) from ITM 2009/10. I have been working with Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) since 2004, first in Indonesia for HIV, TB, outbreak investigations and response to emergencies. In 2006 I started my missions abroad. South Sudan (cholera, secondary health care), India (access to health care and MCH), Somalia (Kala Azar and TB), Ethiopia (nutrition program) and Darfur, Sudan (access to health care and MCH). I enjoyed both being field doctor and coordination positions. My diverse experience exposed me to different challenges both from programmatic and public health point of views, and I developed inclination towards issues of access to health care, especially for the marginalized populations. Currently I’m searching for opportunities to apply my knowledge and skills in any contexts. My particular interests include the rapidly changing field of global health, disease control programs especially neglected tropical diseases with insights on health system and management. I’m keen on constant development of skills and knowledge and fascinated by innovative ways to achieve health care for all. “

Anar Ulikpan, I am a medical doctor specialised in pae-diatrics. I have also completed my Masters in Public Health from Nuffield Institute for International Health, University of Leeds, UK in 2006. Most of my work ex-perience is in the field of health planning, policy devel-opment and health management. I was a member of the Core Group, which led the process for the devel-opment of the Health Sector Master Plan 2006-2015 in Mongolia, hence strategic planning has become my other field of interest and enthusiasm. During the last 2 years, my experience has consisted of working as an advisor with the Asian Development Bank -MoH joint project in Health management and Sector-wide approaches. It made me realize deeply the crucial need for strengthening local capacity, health manage-ment systems and promoting harmonisation of the efforts made by the international and domestic health partners. I am interested in contributing to providing better health services through improving the health system, increasing the capacity of the policy makers, health managers, building partnerships and improving system effectiveness and efficiency through employing Sector-wide approaches.

My name is Khim Keovathanak (called Vathanak). I am from Cambodia. I graduated in 2001 with a Master’s degree in public health from New York University, USA, where I studied with support of Fulbright scholarship. I have worked for more than 10 years in the Cambodian public health system for different organizations such as RACHA, a USAID-funded maternal and child health program, UNFPA and PSI, all in the area of monitoring and evaluation. From 2006 onward before going back to school I worked as consultant in the health sector specialized in program evaluation and health system strengthening. In 2008-2009 I was in the consulting team of Oxford Policy Management for the formulation of Health Sec-tor Support Project 2 for the Ministry of Health and the estab-lishment of government-run, donor-funded Special Operating Agencies (SOA), the Cambodian government’s reform agenda to improve public sector services. I’m currently pursuing PhD study in health system at the University of Melbourne, Aus-tralia, on Ausaid’s Australia Leadership Award programme. My PhD research project focuses on the recent health reform being undertaken by the Ministry of Health in Cambodia using internal contracting. I believe that in developing countries health development is one of key aspects to successful poverty alleviation and overall country development. To reach that, equity in access to and utilisation of health services for all and improving the healthcare system and the quality of health services are a must. My research interest encompasses these areas. For now, I am particularly interested in research-ing the area of health system strengthening, including health financing, contracting and private sector involvement.”

I graduated from medical school in 2003 from Mysore, India. I learnt what causes illness in college. As a doctor among tribal people in South India and North-east India, I saw first hand how health care is socially, geographically, culturally and oftentimes, politically determined. I traversed through the Indian health care services as a doctor in an NGO, as a medical officer in a PHC and subsequently as a trainer of health workers. Fascinated by innovations, I worked on eHealth and community health insurance at primary health care implementing these innova-tions in PHCs run under Public-private Partnership. In course of my work, mental health services in primary health care captivated my time and attention. After my Masters in 2008 from the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp I have been a Faculty at Institute of Public Health, Bangalore (IPH). At IPH, I am involved in capacity building of district and taluka health teams in managing health services. For my PhD at ITM, I am studying the mechanisms through which capacity building of health workforce changes management practices. I believe that health workers are the most critical determinants of the performance of a health system. Apart from public health, I contribute to vari-ous open information/software initiatives including DHIS and am an editor and reviewer on Wikipedia and related projects.”

I graduated from medical school in 2001. Subsequently, I worked as a general medical practitioner in a district hospital where tropical diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS and visceral leishmaniasis are common health problems. After 6 months of service in the hospital, I was promoted to be the medical director of the hospital and served for four years in that post. I then developed interest for management of disease control programs. I applied for and got scholarship in the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, and studied Master of Science in Disease control in 2005/2006. After I finished my studies, I came back to Ethiopia and was assigned as the National AIDS Program Manager in September 2006. I worked with that role for 2 and half years until December 2008. It was indeed a successful experience both for the country and me, and I learnt and contributed a lot. The coun-try introduced and started to implement a reform initiative called “business process reengineering” in 2009. I was then transferred to the Ministry of Health as Director of Medical Services which is responsible for health service delivery at health centers and hospitals in the country. By then, I had already started PhD study, and I had to work both on my job and PhD. Hence, I faced time constraints to run both. After 1 year and 4 months as Director of Medical Services in the Ministry, I have been working with Federal HIV/AIDS Preven-tion and Control Office as Director of Planning and Monitoring & Evaluation since June 2010. My area of interest is “disease control programs and health systems” for better health outcomes. “

I have special interest in e-health applications and believe that Information Communication Technol-ogy can assist and support the weakened health care delivery system of developing countries. The fast pace of mobile penetration in Africa and wireless technol-ogy can be taken as an opportunity to use it for health promotion and disease prevention. The technology especially at the grass root level making the com-munity to participate in the decision making of their own health, and bringing health care and promotion to them. Even though e-health applications showed prom-ises still developing countries have to rely, and benefit from global partnership between north and south in terms of knowledge transfer, research, capacity build-ing and infrastructure development.
