Annual Review2016

Welcome

As fiscal year 2016 concluded, I found it important to reflect

back on the challenges and successes of 2016. This year was a

time of exciting growth and challenges at the Lincoln Park

Community Shelter (LPCS), and I am proud to present our in-

augural Annual Review 2016 to you, our dedicated and pas-

sionate supporters. This report will allow you to learn more

about the great accomplishments of our staff, volunteers, and

Guests. Throughout the year, we carried out our mission of

“bringing communities together to empower homeless men

and women to make and sustain life changes.” We saw nearly

70% of Guests transition to housing this year, and we increased

our permanent supportive housing program to 17 residents!

LPCS is not religiously affiliated, and is completely pri-

vately funded. Truly a community-based organization, we op-

erate on a modest budget (see page 7) and rely largely on the

support of over 1,500 volunteers each year who serve as meal

providers and overnight supervisors. Today, a full-time staff of

nine professionals empower more than 400 homeless men and

women yearly with educational programs and personal coun-

seling in a supportive, secure, and healthy environment so they

can make positive life changes and become vital members of

our community. The plight of homelessness is still among us,

and LPCS will continue our work until every man and woman

is safe, warm, and off the streets. From the LPCS Board of Di-

Our Mission

The Lincoln Park Community Shelter (LPCS) brings commu-

nities together to empower homeless men and women to make

and sustain life changes.

Vision

� We will provide a holistic continuum of services that

removes barriers and increases self-sufficiency.

� We will be a leader and innovator in creating solutions

to homelessness in our community.

� We believe that every person in our community has a

stake in and can contribute to ending homelessness.

What We Do

Interim Housing Community: Serves up to 35 Guests each

night year-round—24 men and 11 women. In addition to meals

and a safe living space, it provides storage, showers, and laun-

dry facilities for Guests.

On Track Program: Challenges Guests to address the reasons

for homelessness and barriers to self-sufficiency by setting gen-

eral guidelines that empowers them to plan for the future and

break the cycle of homelessness.

Independent Community Living Program: Provides 17 per-

manent housing units operated under LPCS’ sister organiza-

tion, Independent Community Living, LLC and funded

through matching grants from HUD and local foundations.

Graduate Community: Offers Guests of LPCS who have se-

cured permanent housing access to continued services, guid-

ance, and support of LPCS.

Community Engagement Program: Provides safe refuge for

people in need of assistance as referred by local churches, hos-

pitals, and police.

Howard, 63 years old, is from Chicago with two grown daugh-

ters. In 2013 and 2014, he was a Guest at LPCS.

Howard places the death of one of his closest friends as the cat-

alyst that led to his homelessness. In the weeks that followed,

three other loved ones died. The deaths hit Howard hard; he

decided that life was too short to work at a job that he hated,

so he quit and started looking for something else. Then he was

diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Without income, he started look-

ing into shelters. After moving into LPCS, he was able to “start

to putting the bad stuff behind me.”

Howard’s first months at LPCS were hard, especially living

with 34 other people. He laughingly compares the personalities

and interactions as belonging on a sitcom—he jokes, maybe

he’ll be the one to write it. The closeness extended to sad times

too. He felt intense worry when other residents didn’t return

for the night, or slipped back into an addiction. “Even people

that are really irritating you, they’re still your family.”

As a graduate, Howard continues to have a relationship

with LPCS. Howard’s advice: “Use the time at LPCS to work

through your problems—and be grateful.”

Meet Howard

Meet Daniel & Arthur

Daniel became a volunteer at LPCS in the summer of 2015.

He currently serves as a technology coach and recently joined

the Associate Board. Arthur is 63 years old and became a res-

ident of the Independent Community Living Program at

LPCS in September of 2013. Daniel began working with

Arthur in early 2016.

“Arthur and I have worked together since the start of this year,

and over the course of that period, Arthur has made significant

improvements. His drive and willingness to learn about how

to use email and the internet created a strong foundation of

knowledge about computer basics. Arthur is continuing to

learn about computers by starting a computer class, which

meets for 2 hours a day, for 5 days a week. He is also taking

Spanish classes. I admire Arthur's commitment to continued

learning and personal growth.”
