I am the resurrection and the life. he who believes in Me will live, even though he dies, and whoever lives and believes in Me will never die.

Encouragement Corner

Streams of Living Water

As the eastern sky began to brighten, and the rolling landscape

around us began to shift from shades of grey to that of browns and reds,

it appeared as if Galen and I had chosen a spot completely devoid of

any caribou. After climbing even higher on our 4 wheelers, we eventu-

ally reached the end of the trail, where the already rough terrain became

even rougher. It was then that we spotted the first sign of life (besides

other hunters). A small heard of caribou slowly worked their way up

the mountain to our left. Then, above us, we spotted another herd con-

taining a couple of small bulls. The decision was then made that we

would leave the wheelers behind and continue on foot.

To make a long story short. After climbing for an hour or so,

we eventually found ourselves nearly a mile from our wheelers. It was

there that we spotted a rather large bull resting on the far side of a steep

valley. Not long afterward, thanks to a steady rest and a well place shot,

the bull was ours. What then followed is arguably the most physically

demanding day of my life.

In order to get the bull nearly a mile and a half back to the 4

wheelers, required at least 5 round trips. (which equates to nearly 15

miles of packing…half of which was uphill in very steep terrain) While

Galen cut on the caribou, I began to pack it out. By the end of the sec-

ond trip, my water supply had run out and I was approaching exhaus-

tion, with hours of packing still to come.

By the time I descended into the valley for the third time, I

found that the cool mountain stream that flowed at the base of the valley

became less of an obstacle and more of a Godsend. Upon arriving at the

water’s edge, I would get down on all fours on a flat rock, plunge my

face into the stream and suck in large gulps of ice cold water. In the

midst of my misery, that stream became the very source of respite and

refreshment that I desperately needed. In fact, on each subsequent trip

back and forth, I found myself eagerly anticipating the life-giving wa-

ters that awaited me at the lowest point of my journey.

The prophet Isaiah must have been familiar with such life-

giving streams, because he often referred to them throughout his

prophecies. In light of God’s promise to assist his people in the face of

adversity, he had this to say in Isaiah 41:17-18…

17 "The poor and needy search for water, but there is none; their

tongues are parched with thirst. But I the LORD will answer them;

I, the God of Israel, will not forsake them. 18 I will make rivers

flow on barren heights, and springs within the valleys. I will turn

the desert into pools of water, and the parched ground into

springs. 19 I will put in the desert the cedar and the acacia, the

myrtle and the olive. I will set pines in the wasteland, the fir and

the cypress together, 20 so that people may see and know, may

consider and understand, that the hand of the LORD has done this,

that the Holy One of Israel has created it.

Why did God create such places of respite and refreshment for his peo-

ple? According to Isaiah, he did it, so that their attention would be

drawn back to him as their creator.

God never promised us that life would be easy. In fact, as we

faithfully follow Christ, just the opposite is often the case. What he has

promised us though, is that he would never leave us or forsake us. So,

when those times of hardship come…when you find yourself in the

midst of the lowest part of your journey…look around…because it’s in

such places that living water generally abounds.

Transitions: When NOT to Fear

“Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous?

Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD your God

is with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9

By nature, we are accustomed to want to keep

things the same, familiar, without ever transitioning. Un-

fortunately, time doesn’t always allow for us to stay put in

the comfort of our familiarity. When Robert announced

his retirement a few months ago, many of us heard him

but did not actually believe it was going to happen. But

the official transition has taken place, and I would like to

remind us that there’s no need to fear.

First, we can see transitions all throughout the Bi-

ble, and in each one there remained a constant: God. Our

Creator is aware of the transition here at KCC and I would

suggest that He is involved in it. Secondly, Robert will-

ingly stepped down in his own timing. In that respect, he

felt comfortable handing the baton of responsibility to

myself and Bryan. Finally, Robert is still here! Part of

his desire to retire included continuing to teach and serve

as an elder at KCC. Through the unanimous blessing of

the elders, he could step down while maintaining a very

important presence in our congregation.

I’m honored and grateful to be part of such a lov-

ing congregation who places an emphasis on teaching

God’s Word and the Great Commission. Though my

nerves may get the best of me, I will not be afraid. The

time has come for me, and for you, to step up and make

sure we continue the legacy that began 50 years ago.

In Christ’s love,

Adam
