Fall Talia takes great care in choosing "just right" books during independent reading

time. She recognize many high frequency words and is becoming more aware as she

reads to b/d reversals self-correcting if necessary. We will continue to work on

various vowel rules such as vowel teams and silent e as well as focusing on blends.

During our writing block Talia has great stamina and she is using lowercase letters

more frequently. She should continue rereading her work when finished to check that

her sentences are complete thoughts with capitals at the beginning and punctuation.

Winter Talia is a fluent reader who is experimenting more with expression. When she

comes to an unknown word she will reread the phrase or use context to figure it out.

She is working on more complex spelling patterns such as- ought, ment, tion, ture.

Full of ideas, she is beginning to organize her thoughts into concise paragraphs using

a graphic organizer. She is encouraged to reread to check her narratives.

recorded. They recorded the steps used by using post-its and rolls of calculator tape. They

began with writing the steps for paths such as squares and other shapes. They also wrote

procedures for moving their bee to other locations of the room such as on a Sukkah hop. (Each

group designed a picture of a sukkah). Moving from the real situations of programming to the the

simulation model, the children were introduced to the program Turtle Pond. One goal was to

write the steps needed to get move a turtle to a pond. Another goal was to add obstacles and find

a path that takes the turtle around each obstacle and then off to the pond. The children were

introduced to the beginning four rules for coding: right, left, and right , and left.

Winter For this marking period, the first graders have explored different versions of coding. The

children participated in the Code for an Hour which was an international push to teach children

coding. We also explored ways of using the codes to see different interactions between objects.

We read several books on time and played one game on the computer that allowed students to

practice their understanding of time. We also looked at different ways of making patterns using

pattern blocks and made graphs which showed how many of each type of block was used to make

their personal pattern. As the class is beginning to use the number line hotel, we will be playing

    related computer games.

    Fall

This first trimester in first grade was a very busy one; we dedicated our time in the beginning of

the year to get to know each other, getting along, recognizing our strengths and challenges, making

new friends, becoming series students, independent students, encouraging our curiosity and

knowledge on bible stories, holidays, prayers and last but not list- growing as learners.

In Hebrew we learned the "a" sound, a strong sound and a "weak" sound- no "ko-ah" for all the

Alef - Bet. By now, we are able to read and write words, short and long sentences on variety topics

such as weather, animals, nouns, verbs, colors as much more.

Singing along and playing games are a big part of the way we are learning our vocabulary words

and expending our languish skills. Those activities inquire us to listen, to talk, to play, to write,

to read, to follow, to understand - all in Hebrew!

Part of our Hebrew and Judaic daily routine as to do with following prayers, learning Parrashot

stories and learning about Holiday mitzvoth and costumes. It is defiantly busy times in our

    classroom!

Fall Talia shows enthusiasm when listening to songs and stories. She recognizes all

Hebrew letters as well as all the "a" sounds. Talia follows directions in Hebrew with

ease, reads familiar vocabulary words with comprehension, writes a collection of

vocabulary words and can expand into a short sentence. She expresses words and

short sentences without hesitation, sings along to the songs, and participates actively

during our classroom discussions, morning meetings and classroom activities. Talia

is a wonderful student and she takes all tasks very seriously.

Winter Talia continued to shine over the course of this semester. Talia always puts her best

effort into her work. She is very serious and likes to take her time when it comes to

reading and writing. Talia can recognize all letters and sounds, she can read words,

simple and short sentences. She is not afraid of making here and there some

mistakes, and she is very proud of herself when she finds some. She can write

simple sentences and short paragraphs. Her flexibility benefits her in all learning

areas. She likes to take risks and as such, she is an active participant in games, sing

    alongs and classroom discussions.

Fall Students began the year illustrating a favorite word in art while learning about positive/negative

space, design, and bubble letters. First grade artists were introduced to the work of Vincent van

Gogh through stories, art reproductions, and painting and drawing demonstrations while speaking a

bit of French too. Artists observed carefully and mixed colors while painting real sunflowers and

made Cray-pas drawing interpretations of Vincent's The Starry Night to learn about his lively

colors and vigorous swirling brush strokes. Integrating with Schechter science studies and the van

Gogh unit, students made tree rubbings outside in science class to create cooperative tree collages

as well as individual drawings of trees constructed by letters in the alphabet. After observing

different tree bark colors, students paired up to mix a concoction of bark color using only the

primary colors (red, blue, yellow) and then made individual paintings of trees. During holiday

time, artists drew turkeys for Thanksgiving and glazed ceramic plates for Hanukkah.

Winter First grade artists celebrated winter with two snowy projects. The first was a large scale

cooperative mural on the themes of times of day and "fun in the snow" using thick

tempera paints. Each first grade section depicted a different time of day: day time,

sunset, and night time. The murals were displayed at school. In a special ceramic

project, artists created snow people, snow animals, and snow creatures using wet clay

and colorful glazes before they were fired in the school kiln. During Chinese New Year,

students had the opportunity to paint with bamboo brushes while learning to paint a

    Library

3 3Demonstrates good habits in handling library materials

3 3Listens attentively to librarian and classmates

Fall First grade started the school year with a walk-around review of the many different sections of the

library. We visited the green dot, picture book section and were reminded about the other sections

by looking on the shelf tops for clues (i.e. baseball trophy=sports section). Finally, first graders

were introduced to the much anticipated section of our library, the chapter book section. A long

Jack and the Beanstalk unit followed with reading, comparing and contrasting six different

versions of the classic fairytale. While reading, the children noticed many similarities between the

stories such as the use of the number three (treasures, trips up the beanstalk), the main character

has a problem to solve and must go on a quest, and use of magic. Luckily our school library has a

rich and extensive fairy and folktale collection for the children to continue their exploration of

    fairytales.

Winter During the winter term, first graders took a look at the difference between fiction and non-fiction

books using the theme of dragons. We began by responding to the question, "What does a dragon

look like?" and almost all of the children agreed that dragons breathe fire or smoke. This "fact"

was corroborated in the fictional picture books, Dragon Quest and The Paper Dragon. When we

read, Komodo Dragon-On Location, we learned that long ago explorers believed this gigantic

lizard did breathe fire because they saw a bright red sticky substance constantly flicker in and out

of the lizard's mouth. Scientists later discovered that komodo dragons have very tender gums that

often bleed which led people to believe that it was fire. This mini unit was followed by a look at

two extraordinary people who faced challenges due to their health and their skin color. With the

reading of Wilma Unlimited and The Value of Courage : Jackie Robinson, the children became

very familiar with the words limited and unlimited, courage and bravery. They followed these two

biographies with great interest and felt deep compassion for these athletes.

Fall The first graders have been very busy learning how to work in the science lab safely. As part of

our earth science unit the students have been making observations of the weather while using

scientific tools and strategies. Our next unit, Balance and Motion, is designed to introduce and

reinforce physical science concepts through hands on explorations.

Winter The first graders worked incredibly hard on their physical science unit. They

used their science journals as a tool to record their observations and collect data

during our balance and motion investigations. As a final project they created a

roller coaster which used only the force of gravity to move a marble from start to

finish. Some groups even completed a loop-da-loop. Currently they are using the

KIBO robots to conduct an investigation on friction and other forces.
