“To Kill A Mockingbird”: Chapters 12-16 Chapter 12: (153-168)

-­‐ Jem turns 12 -­‐ Scout looks forward to Dill’s arrival in the summer but he never comes

o We find out he has a “new father” and that he will stay in Meridian -­‐ Atticus has to be in the state legislature and travels to the state capital every day for 2 weeks

o So they go to Calpurnia’s church : “colored” church o Poverty; only have one hymnal so the congregation repeats after Zeebo, Calpurnia’s oldest son

and the town garbage collector. Goodness and solidarity of the black community o One woman, Lula, criticizes, but the rest are friendly

# Offering taken for Tom Robison’s wife, Helen, who can’t find work now that Tom has been accused of rape (*p. 164) Scout wonders why anyone would believe the Ewells

Chapter 13: 169-179 -­‐ Aunt Alexandra comes to bring “feminine influence” -­‐ Bullies Atticus and imposes vision of social order that the kids don’t really play into -­‐ Clashes with Calpurnia and thinks she is unnecessary -­‐ Obviously cares deeply about the kids, but probably goes about demonstrating her care the wrong way

Chapter 14: 180-192 -­‐ impending trial of Tom Robinson and Atticus as defense lawyer make Jem and Scout recipients of

whispers and glances around town -­‐ One day, Scout tries to ask Atticus what “rape” is, and the subject of going to Cal’s church comes up -­‐ Jem tells Scout not to antagonize Aunt Alexandra -­‐ Scout discovers Dill under the bed!

o He has run away because his mother and father didn’t pay enough attention to him. o Took a train from Meridian to Maycomb and covered the remaining 14 miles on back of a wagon o Atticus is kind/tells Aunt Rachel where Dill is

-­‐ Dill goes to sleep in Jem’s bed, then comes over to Scout: page 189-192: innocence, sweet, cute, ironic

CHAPTER SIXTEEN (pp. 208-221) Atticus explains to Jem, “Mr. Cunningham’s basically a good man… he just has his blind spots along with the rest of us… He might have hurt me a little… but son, you’ll understand folks a little better when you’re older. A mob’s always made up of people, no matter what. Mr. Cunningham was part of a mob last night, but he was still a man.” (p. 210) Analyze this statement. What does it mean to be a part of a “mob?” What does it mean to be “a man?” What is the difference? ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 4. Atticus continues, “So it took an eight-year-old child to bring ‘em to their senses, didn’t it? … That proves something – that a gang of wild animals can be stopped, simply because they’re still human. That was enough.” (p. 210)What does Atticus mean by saying the children made Walter Cunningham stand in his (Atticus’) shoes?
