Hawkins, 233 ; Carlyon-Britton I.
PL I. 1III. 10.Notes and varieties
:
On some coins of this type a very fine inner circle is visible on the obverse(e.g. p. 2, no. 4 and PI. I. 4); this does not constitute part of the design.but was drawn by the engraver to guide him in punching the inscription
;
it was very shallow, and was presumably removed in most cases when thesurface of the die was polished. Similarly, the pellet which is often seen inthe centre of this and other reverse types probably marks the hole made inthe centre of the die by the foot of the compasses with which these circleswere drawn.
The following varieties of the obverse type occur
:
Bust to r. (PL II. 9, P. W. P. Carlyon-Britton sale. 1913, lot G77).Sceptre omitted, nos. 8, 23, 29 (PI. I. 7 ; II. 1, 7).Inscription beginning above the king's head, nos. 2, 66, 6!) (PI. I. 2 ; III. 9),
also on Mule I x II (PI. III. 15, R. C. Lockett coll.).Pellet in field below king's chin, no. 5 (PI. I. 5).Thi'ee stalked pellets as central ornament of crown, no. 10.
Of the reverse type the following :
Inner circle plain, passim (PI. I. 1, &c).
The following coins are of unusually rough work :
Bristol, no. 3 (PI. I. 3).Winchester coins of this type are mostly rough and their inscriptions
blundered, notably nos. 53-8 (PL III. 3, 4, 5).York, no. 70 (PL III. 10).

The coins of the Lincoln, Stamford, and York mints are all of very rough
