What you can do to help......
Encourage students to read a non fiction text everyday e.g. A newspaper article, leaflet, webpage and summarise it in their own words (verbally and or in writing).
2. Presentation of Ideas and information - layout
Tests students’ ability to....... • Identify the purpose of the text • To identify and analyse techniques the writer has used to achieve their
purpose. • To comment on presentational features such as headlines and pictures
and link them to the purpose of the text. What parents can do to help....... Encourage students to read a non fiction text and discuss the following with
you • What is the purpose of this writing • Who is the audience? • Find five language techniques and explain how they have been used to
achieve the purpose. • Consider how and why the layout supports the writing’s purpose –
specifically headlines, pictures and captions.
3. Presentation of ideas and information – tone and language
Tests students’ ability to..... • Identify the writers’ tone. • Comment on the structure of a text in relation to its
purpose. • Identify and analyse language techniques the writer has
used to achieve their purpose. What you can do to help...... Encourage students to read a non-fiction text every day and
discuss the following with you: • What tone does the writer use? • Why has the writer started and ended the text in this way? • Which language techniques can you spot and how does
each help the purpose of the text (AFOREST, simile, metaphor, exaggeration etc)?
4. Writing
Tests students’ ability to: • Use correct spelling, punctuation and grammar. • Structure a piece of writing, including using well connected
paragraphs. • Use ambitious vocabulary • Use language techniques such as similes, metaphors,
rhetorical questions, triples etc. • Write imaginatively. What parents can do to help....... Encourage students to use the questions and timings in the
revision booklet to rehearse writing under timed conditions and to discuss the response afterwards.
English Literature Revision A View From The Bridge – Modern Drama – Monday 20th May Animal Farm & Unseen Poetry – Lit Heritage Prose & Contemporary Poetry – Thurs 23rd May What parents can do to help...... A View From The Bridge/Animal Farm •Test students on revision notes on characters and themes. •Select a page or two at random from the play/novel and ask students to tell you how it fits in with the rest of the play/novel and what is particularly interesting about that extract.
Unseen Poetry •Choose a contemporary poem at random from a website such as www.thepoem.co.uk •Discuss with students the following:
•Overview (what is the poem about?) •The poet’s treatment of the subject (the tone) •The sounds in the poem (alliteration / assonance / onomatopoeia) •The language of the poem (similes, metaphors etc) •The structure of the poem (Verse form / line lengths, caesura, enjambment etc) •Overall impact of the poem on the reader

Make your own flashcards with important facts such as the area of a circle or the volume of a pyramid. Keep testing yourself.
How do you revise Maths?
Remember the teachers are all still in school, happy to work with the students. They could use email for simple questions or to arrange suitable times to come in.
Remember to come in for all the revision sessions; it is easy to forget important ideas and skills without regular opportunities to study them.
