Select the suitable mixing valve

ESBE 3-way or 4-way mixing valves, sizes DN 15–150, for heating and cooling systems in buildings.

ESBE 3-way mixing valve are usually connected as a mixingvalve, but it may also be used as a changeover valve ordiverting valve. ESBE 4-way mixing valve are used whenhigher return water temperature to the boiler is required.

Valves

Fields of application1) Control of heating in radiation and under floor systems.2) Changeover or diverting valve (only 3-ways).Make sure that the nominal pressure, the differential pressure as well as the leak rate are within acceptable values. This information are stated for each valve.

How to select a rotary mixing valveIf you require high return temperature (mostly solid fuelinstallations) you shall choose a 4-way mixing valve. In allother applications/installations a 3-way valve is prefered. In systems with two heat sources or ackumulatingtanks, theBIV-valve helps to priority the cheapest energy source andkeeps a good separation in the tank.

Selection of mixing valve sizeEach size of mixing valve has a Kv-value (capacity in m3 at apressure drop of 1 bar) stated. It is the Kv-value as well asthe system the valve shall serve that decides which valve tochoose. You find suitable Kv-values in the graph to the right. For a radiation system g t = 20°C usually is choosen andfor under floor heating g t = 5°C.Suitable pressure drop should be in the range 3–10 kPa.As a rule of thumb, the lowest Kv-value is chosen, if thereare two alternative within the pressure drop range.

Material/MediaValves made of castiron may only be used in closed systemswhere the water is not oxygenated. Valves 3 MG and 4 MGare made in DZR brass and are suitable also for potablewater installations.Maximum 50% glycol for freezing protection and oxygenabsorbing compounds are allowed as additives.

3-way mixing valves type G and FValves

Valve characteristic

OperationThe ESBE 3-Way valve is intended for use in heating andcooling systems to control and distribute the medium to thedifferent radiator groups. The required system temperature is obtained by adding a suitable proportion of return water to the boiler flow. The mixing proportions are adjusted manually or, in automatically controlled plants, by means of a actuator. The scale is graduated on both sides and can be turned, allowing a choice of mounting positions. The valve is usuallyconnected as a mixing valve, but it may also be used as adiverting valve, see examples.

Service and maintenanceAll major parts are replaceable. Two O-rings, one of whichcan be replaced without the need for draining down thesystem or dismantling the valve.

OperationThe ESBE 4-way valve has a double mixing function, i.e. partof the hot water supplied by the boiler is added to the returnwater. This results in a higher return water temperature thancan be achieved with a normal 3-way mixing valve, reducingthe risk for corrosion and assuring a longer life of the boiler. The required flow water temperature is obtained by mixing boiler hot water with a suitable proportion of the returnwater. ESBE 4-way valves type T/TM are specially designed for factory fitting to boilers.

4 TM, DN 20, DZR, PN 10. External thread or with compression fittings. 4 T, DN 20–32, cast iron, PN 6. Internal thread.

4-way mixing valves type T and TMValves

ApplicationThe T/TM valves have the two ports for the boiler side in asingle flange. The riser and return from the radiator systemhave female threads connections for the T-Type and male threadsor compression fittings for the TM version. Suitable flanges forwelding to the boiler are also available. The T/TM valves have a double mixing function, i.e. a proportion of the hot water supplied from the boiler is mixedwith the return water. This results in a higher return water temperature reducing the risk of corrosion and assuring a longer life for the boiler. They are designed to provide goodcontrol characteristics and reliability in operation. For automatic control ESBE actuator Series 60 is recommended.

OperationESBE 4-Way valves Type BIV are intended for heating systemswith two alternative heat sources. The valve should be set togive priority to the most economic heat source. The valve may be controlled manually or by a compensated temperatureregulator.

FunctionThe BIV valve has two inlets to which the heat sources can beconnected either in parallel or in series. The primary, i.e. thelow cost heat source should be connected to port 1 and thesecondary to port 2. When no heat is needed, both ports 1 and2 are closed. When heat is needed, the supply from port 1 isused as long as the required temperature can be maintained. When this is no longer the case the valve provides initially amixed flow from ports 1 and 2. Finally port 2 is fully open andport 1 closed. (The function is like a 3-way valve but with twoinlets instead of one.)The BIV valve may also be used on water storage cylinderswhere two outlets from the tank are required. One outlet at thetop of the tank and one half way down the tank serve the valveand the return line from the heating system is connected to thebottom of the cylinder. With this arrangement the warmer waterfrom the top of the cylinder will be used in conjunction with thecooler water drawn from the mid position.

We manufacture, develope and market valves and actuators for controlling hydronic systems for

central heating and domestic boiler applications. We concentrate on few product segments to create more

power, gain more time and achieve higher degree of skill. It is our ambition to provide the best possible

economic advantage and also to be energy efficient.

In our opinion there is no need for a product to be ugly, clumsy and hard to use only because it is hidden. On the contrary, for us design is the focus of attention. We are trying to design the products to be both aesthetically pleasing and easily used.
