    LESSON VI

A LETTER FROM CAROLA431 Clark StreetBaton Rouge, LA

    November 1, 2002

    Dear Isabel,

Asyou know, I am attending Louisiana State University. There are so many things to do and to seethat it is hard to findtime to write letters. Besides, I have to study very hard, because my coursesare difficult, and my English isnt very good yet.

I think that you will be interestedin the North American custom of dating because it is not likethecustom at home. To have a datemeans to have an engagementfor a social affairwith a friend, usually a friend of the opposite sex. For instance, one has a date to go for a walk, to go to the

movies, to go to a partyor to a dance, to go to a lectureor a concert, to have dinner at a restaurantor at the home of some friends. The young peoplego without a chaperon. The basisof this NorthAmerican custom is that parents teach their children to be independent and responsible for theiractions whetherthere are adults present or not.

One of my cousins is Robert Anderson. I met him in one of my classes, and of course anintroduction is not necessary when you see each other in class every day. One day after class heasked me to go to the drug store to have a Coke, and then he walked home with me. A week later heinvited me to go to the movies, and last night I had a date to go to a college dancewith him. He is avery good dancer, soI had a wonderful time.

Now I have to stop, because I have an appointmentwith my history professor. In my next letter Imgoing to write more about my classes and my social life. Please give my regardsto your family, andlet me hear from you soon.

    LESSON VII

    THE MOVIES

There was a good movie at the Columbia Theater last week, so Carola and Robert decided to see it.

They arrived at the theater at seven oclock, in time for the newsreel. (In cities in the United States, shows usually begin at one oclock in the afternoon and are continuous until midnight.) Robertwanted to sit in the balcony; but because Virginia preferred to sit downstairs, they sat on the mainfloor.

The mainfeaturewas aboutcollege life, as Hollywood interprets it, and was very entertaining. Inthe picture, the students played football, went to dances, and sangsongs to pretty girls. In fact, theydid everything but study. The actingand the music were good, but the filmdid not showhow NorthAmerican students reallylive. It is truethat students dance and playon weekends, but during theweek they study hard.

Carola sees many movies, and she says that they do not present a true pictureof American life. Themovies often exaggerate or emphasizethe sensational and the exceptional instead of showing howmostpeople in the United States really live. The factis that North Americans usually go to themovies for amusement; they want to escape from the monotonous routineof everydaylife. Theydo not take the movies seriously, because they know that the films are made especially to entertainthe public.
