Training Description

This professional training seminar on the ethical and legal aspects of high conflict divorce and child custody cases is designed especially for professionals in psychology, law, mental health, counseling, law enforcement, custody evaluations, and alternative dispute resolution,

as well as for other practitioners interested in developing a better understanding of how these cases impact the criminal justice and mental health systems. Special attention is given to understanding how family court operates and the laws and procedures that govern high conflict divorce and custody cases. Particular attention will also be given to the role of mediation and other conflict resolution processes in addressing needs of the parties in high conflict divorces. We will also examine controversial topics in high-conflict divorce and custody cases including domestic abuse, unsubstantiated abuse allegations, parental conflict, and parenting time with very young children. The training will also explore the ways in which high conflict divorce and custody cases affect areas such as law enforcement,

mental health, as well as the role of forensic mental health practitioners in these cases.

Training Objectives

1. Learn about the laws and procedures that govern family court and high conflict custody cases. 2. Examine the professionals and processes in place to address high conflict child custody disputes including ENEs, GALs, PCs, PTEs, and other acronyms. 3. Examine alternative avenues for dispute resolution to assist high-conflict families. 4. Discuss the ways in which high conflict child custody cases intersect with law enforcement and therapeutic mental health services. 5. Explore the legal aspects of child custody disputes including the present state of the law on child custody, and hot topics in custody

cases, including unsubstantiated abuse allegations, the effect of parental conflict on children, and parenting time schedules with very young children.

Michael P. Boulette, Esq. is an attorney with the firm of

Lindquist & Vennum, where he advocate for clients in dissolution and other family law matters. Michael focuses his practice on marital dissolution, custody, and post-decree and appellate work in cases with complex financial and custodial issues. Michael is recognized by Minnesota Super Lawyers as a "Rising Star" among his peers, an honor received by no more than 2.5% of lawyers in

Minnesota. He is also a prolific author and presenter, with articles appearing in a variety of legal publications. Michael is also the founder and writer of the family law blog, family-in-law.com exploring family law trends in Minnesota and throughout the country. Rachel Tiede, MA,MA, is employed at Pathways

Counseling Center as a Mental Health Practitioner. Rachel has a Master’s degree in Education and is pursuing her second Master’s degree in Counseling from Adler Graduate School. Rachel is an adjunct instructor for Concordia University and Hamline University. Hal Pickett, Psy.D., LP, ABPP, is the Director of Client

Services of Headway Emotional Health Services, a non-profit community emotional health program in the Twin Cities. Dr. Pickett has been practicing Psychology since 1995 and was a practicing Physical Therapist prior to that. Dr. Pickett became a Diplomat with the American Psychological Association in Child and Adolescent

Psychology in 2012. Karmit Bulman, JD, is the executive director of the Conflict Resolution Center (CRC) and is an attorney, qualified neutral under Rule 114, adjunct professor of Law at University of Minnesota School of Law and the author of The Conflict Consultant’s Handbook. Ms.

Bulman has been the director of non-profit organizations

for 29 years.
