Strategy 2020: Target Actions

• Vehicle Safety Ratings

– Cornerstone of Euro NCAP‘s strategy

• Advanced Rewards

– Instrument to give rewards for new technology

• Campaigns

– Raise costumer awareness on peripheral topics

• Consultation

• International Cooperation

Articulated Dummy

• VRU AEB protocol has been developed with a static

(non-animated) dummy

• Static dummy is much more complex to detect than

an animated dummy

– Change of contrast foreground-background during walking

motion

→ Is in real life used for fast pedestrian detecon

– Moving legs generate locally oscilating speeds

→ Is in real life used for object classificaon

• Animated dummy is currently developed for 2016 or

2017 or 2018 implementa9on (≠ road map)

Night and obscure lighting

National accident data from Germany and GB (averaged) of years 2008-2010

Crashes in dark light conditions are

prominent with regard to high

pedestrian injury severity.

AEB Testing: Bicycles

• Test scenarios under investigation

– Representative for EU28

– Different sources needed

– Harmonization!

• Bicycle dummy and

propulsion system

under development

• Implementation

planned for 2018Source: TNO / http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4tpvhWYEzc

AEB Pedestrian Testing: Night

• Accident data shows street lights are present in

the majority of cases!

• Accident data shows higher car speeds at night

• Other accident types (Turning? Walking along?)

• Implementation 2018

AEB C2C and VRU: Case Study Mopeds

• 20% of European traffic fatalities are riders of

Mopeds/Motorcycles (=PTWs)

– Euro NCAP will perform a case study ~ 2017/2018
