2nd EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPWroclaw / POLAND, July 5th – 10th, 2004
Footballers from all over the Europe met in Wroclaw at the 2nd European Uni-versity Football Champion-ship. 11 men teams from 10 countries were received by the organisers of the
event, the Academic Sports Association of Wroclaw and the Academy of Physical Education of Wroclaw. Although the Championship started on July 5th, some of the teams arrived on July 3rd already in order to become acquainted with the city and the venues. When everybody arrived, the technical meeting was held, conducted by Mr. Filipe San-tos, EUSA Executive Committee member and Mr. Antonis Petrou, EUSA Technical Delegate.
Then they finally kicked off! Competing in 3 pools, the teams were fighting for the victory from the beginning. On the pitches of the beautifully situated sports centre of the Academy of Physical Education, the rivalry was very bal-anced.
The Championship started with the opening ceremony which took place in “Tawerna Club”. The participating teams were welcomed by the Rector of the Academy of Physical Education, Prof. Tadeusz Koszczyc and the President of the Organising Committee, Prof. Juliusz Mi-gasiewicz. Afterwards Mr. Filipe Santos, a representative of EUSA, officially opened the Championship.

In the evening, there was time for relaxation. Every day, the participants met in the Championship’s official pub, “Green Lantern”, in order to enjoy their free time and the company of beautiful Polish women. Each team was assigned its own volunteer who guided the competitors to the city’s at-tractions and helped them in case any problems arose.
After three days of playing in pools, the quarterfinals fol-lowed. One of the favourites was eliminated at this stage, namely the University of Würzburg from Germany. In the semi-finals, the perfectly organised team from Besançon (FRA) defeated the effectively playing team from Prague (CZE) with 2:0, while the brave Greeks of the Technologi-cal Institute of Athens won against the University of Novi Sad (SCG), scoring the only goal of the game in the last minute of extra time! Both semi-final matches were very exciting.
The final match was played at the GEM Stadium and viewed by many spectators, among others, by the repre-sentatives of local authorities. After a ravishing game, the University of Besançon team won with 3:0, proving their ability to reach for their first European Championship! The team from Prague obtained the third place in the tourna-ment, defeating University of Novi Sad with 2:0.
At the award giving ceremony, Mr. Adam Roczek, the Vice-President of the Organising Committee, also mentioned the names of the persons who were elected the most valu-able players. The best player was elected Peter Horkavy from the Charles University of Prague, the best scorer with 12 goals Procopis Procopiou from the University of Cyprus and the best goalkeeper Mikael Pacati from the winning team, University of Besançon.
