European University Sports NEWSLETTER 03-2009 EUSA MOURNS THE LOSS OF ITS HONORARY PRESIDENT 1999 - 2009 NEWS FROM MEMBER FEDERATIONS EUSA NEWS On the occasion of Universiade Bel- grade 2009, the President of EUSA, Mr Alberto Gualtieri had a meeting with the President of ENAS, Mr. Peter Lynen. Mr. Lynen presented a draft proposal for a future common activity between the two organizations to the EUSA President. The proposal RUSSIA On July 17 th , 2009, President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev met the winners and medallists of the Russian delegation at the 25th Sum- mer Universiade in Belgrade, Serbia. The meeting was held in Ekaterininsky Hall of the Kremlin in Moscow. The Russian delegation headed the medal ta- ble tally with 76 medals (27 gold, 22 silver & 27 bronze). The President congratulated the members of the Russian student’s team - sportsmen and coaches - with the victory and wished them success in future competitions and their university studies. It is with great regret and deep sadness that we have learned the passing away of our esteemed Honorary President, Mr. Enno Harms, on August 12, 2009, in Hannover, Germany. EUSA grieves over the loss of our dear friend who dedicated his life to the university sports movement. Mr. Enno Harms was one of the originators of EUSA and its President from 1999 to 2005. In 2005 he was nominated Honorary President of EUSA. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the German University Sports Federation (ADH) since 1973, and its President between 1991 and 1992. Professionally he was connected to the University of Hanover as its Director of the Department for University Sport. We convey all of our sympathy to his family, the loved ones and the German University Sports Federation. will be discussed on the next EUSA Executive Committee meeting. Through Stefan Bergh, the FISU Vice President, President Gualtieri has also been maintaining a correspondence with Mr. Jan Holze, ENGSO Youth President to deepen the analysis of a possible collaboration with this organization. FISU NEWSUNIVERSIADE BELGRADEThe 25th Summer Universiade was held in Belgrade (SRB) from July 1-12, 2009. Student-athletes from all over the world competed in 14 different sports. 8,166 participants from 122 countries took part in this multi-sport event where 4 athletics and no less than 30 swimming Universiade Records were bro-ken. Various Olympic and World Champions competed at the Games, as well as numerous Olympians and other elite athletes. The closing ceremony took place in Belgrade Arena. The FISU President Killian thanked the Organising Committee and the Volunteers for the organisation of the games and handed over the FISU flag to the Mr. Wang Rong the Acting Mayor of Shenzhen, the host city of the 26th Summer Universiade in 2011. CYPRUSThe Cyprus Univer-sity Sports Federa-tion (CUSF) elected a new board for the period 2009-2013. The new CUSF President is Dr. Michalis Krashias, the Vice-President Dr. Panos Razis

and Secretary General Dr. Christofor-os Hadjikyprianou. CUSF is one of the most active EUSA Member Federation. In 2010 EUC Handball will be organ-ised in Nicosia. More information on the federation is published on their website www.cusf.org.cy

FISU GENERAL ASSEMBLYThe ordinary FISU General Assembly was organised from June 28-29, 2009 in Bel-grade, Serbia. The Assembly approved the reports from the President, the Treasurer, the Internal Auditor and Secretary-General as well as the reports of the Development Committee and the Women’s Committee. The Women’s Committee announced the winner of the first ‘FISU Women and Sport Award’ which went to the ‘Tandem Project’ from ADH, the German National University Sport Federation. The General Assembly also approved some modifications to the FISU Statute and the activity program for the period 2009-2013. Nine new Member Associations as well as the Conti-nental Associate Member - Oceania University Sport Asso-ciation were accepted to the FISU membership.

EUROPEAN UNIVERSITIES CHAMPIONSHIPS 11 European Universities Championships have already finished, while 4 of the championships still have to be organised this year.

EUC BASKETBALLThe 9th European Universities Basket-ball Championship which took place from June 15-21, 2009 in Heraklion (GRE) successfully finished. 15 men and 12 women from 16 European coun-tries participated on the champion-ship. The event was organised on a very high level by the University of Crete, the Mu-nicipality of Herak-lion and Hellenic Committee for University Sports, and more than 370 participants re-ally enjoyed their stay in the beauti-ful Island of Crete. The winners became the University of Ljubljana in men and the Russian State Agricultural Uni-versity in women competition. More information and results can be found on http://basket-eu09.edu.uoc.gr/. Next year the event will be organised in Poznan (POL).

EUC HANDBALLThe 4th EUC Handball 2009 was organ-ised in Ljubljana (SLO) from June 15-21, 2009. 12 men and 7 women univer-sity teams from 10 European countries participated on the event organised in co-operation of the University of Ljubljana, City of Ljubljana, Slov-enian University Sports Association and other partners. The event started with wonder-ful opening ceremony. Around 300 partici-pants were welcomed by Mrs. Andreja Ko-cijancic, Rector of the University of Ljubljana, Mr. Zoran Jankovič, Mayor of Ljubljana and Mr. Leonz Eder, EUSA EC Representative.The sports program showed very qual-ity matches that ended with finals on Sunday. Around all week, the participants could also enjoy a very reach cul-tural program, excursions around Slovenia, receptions at the City Hall and the University of Ljubljana. EUC BADMINTONThe 6th European Universities Badmin-ton Championship was organised from June 21-24, 2009 in Geneva (SUI). 18 teams with about 160 athletes par-ticipated on the event organised by the Swiss University Sports Federation and University of Ge-neva, which celebrates this year its 450 years anniversary. With the fantastic atmosphere the students used a chance to make new international contacts and also visit the beau-tiful old part of Geneva, the huge water fountain and expe-rienced Geneva’s rich history. The Fair-Play Trophy which was donated by the Development Director of the World Badminton Federation Mr. Günther Huber was awarded to the University of Hamburg by the decision of the umpires and the Referee Monique Bastien (SUI). At the end the EUSA Flag was passed to Mr. Christophe Milliard, the rep-resentative of the Organizing Committee EUC Badminton 2010 that will be held in Nancy (FRA). EUC FUTSALThe 6th EUC Futsal 2009 was organ-ised in Podgorica (MNE) from July 20-26, 2009. 210 participants were repre-senting 16 men university teams from 15 European countries. Players scored average 7 goals per match and received average 2 cards per match. There was only one red card that means the real winner of the tournament was the idea of fair-play. The organizers from University Sport Association from Montenegro provided also a great trip to the Montenegrin beach for all participants and presented a regional cultural programme. After a magnificent final match against Sumy State University (UKR) team from University of Malaga (ESP) received gold medals. Top scorer of the champion-ship became Sergio Arriaza Leiva form University of Mala-ga (ESP). The fair play award went to Tampere University of Technology from Finland. Next 7th European Universi-ties Futsal Championship will be held in Zagreb (CRO) in 2010. For the first time also women competition will be or-ganised in the same time and place.

EUC FOOTBALLThe 7th European Universities Football Championship was held in Wroclaw (POL) from July 20-26, 2009. 14 men and 7 women university teams from 13 countries took part on the event organ-ised by AZS Wroclaw and AZS Poland. In the men com-petition the title of the champion went to the Pedagogical Academy from Ternopil (UKR) after winning in the finals with 1:0 the Ivano – Frankivsk University of Oil and Gas (UKR). In women event the winners became the students from the Autonoma de Madrid (ESP) which defeated in exciting final match the University of Montpellier with 4:3. The winners were awarded by medals and cups presented by Mr. Dinos Pavlou, the EUSA Executive Committee Del-egate and Mr. Piotr Marszal, the Organizing Committee Chairman. The best scorer became Jessica Houara from University of Montpellier (FRA) in women and Halil Ibra-him Alam from Halic University (TUR) in men event. The Fair Play Award went to ETH Zurich (SUI) in women and the University of Jyvaskala (FIN) in men event.The EUSA

flag was passed to Warszaw (POL) which will organize the next Championship in 2010. More information on the event can be found on the web-site: www.football209.azs.wroclaw.pl

EUC TABLE TENNISThe Championship was organized by the Serbian University Sports Federa-tion in cooperation with the University of Nis. Mr. Sinisa Jasnic, the EUSA Vice-President thanked to all of the participants for coming to Nis and same time he invited all of them to Kazan (RUS), which will in 2010 organise next EUC Table Tennis. EUC BEACH - VOLLEYBALL The 6th EUC Beach Volleyball was or-ganised in Gdynia (POL) from July 29 – August 02, 2009. 76 participants were representing 26 university teams from 13 European countries. The event was organised by the Gdynia Maritime Univer-sity and University Sport Association of Poland which pro-vided also a boat trip to Hel for all participants. The first time in history there was also a mixed tournament of con-solation played for teams which didn’t have enough luck in the main tournament. The title of the champions EUC 2009 finally went to Poland in men and Estonia in women competition. All results, photos and other news are avail-able on the website: www.gdynia2009.eu. Next EUC will be held in Kazan (RUS) in 2010.

EUC TENNISPoznań was the host city of the 6th Eu-ropean Universities Tennis Champion-ship held from July 26th to August 1st,

2009. This year 10 women’s teams and 12 men’s teams from 9 European coun-tries took part in it. Among over 70 play-ers there were several women and men with current ATP/WTA ranking. The level of competition was very high and some matches were really spectacular. During the Closing Ceremony the special guests of the Organizing Commit-tee, representing the authorities of the Poznań City and Region as well as the Polish Tennis Association, presented medals, cups, diplomas and other awards to the winners.Nick Grivas, EUSA Tennis Technical Delegate said that this year’s EUC Tennis was very well organized by the Poznań University Sports Association and cordially thanked all members of the Organizing Committee and all students-volunteers engaged in the organization for their excellent job. The 7th European Universities Tennis Championship will be held in July 2010 in Coimbra (POR).

EUSA CONVENTIONThe 2009 EUSA Convention for the organisers of the 2010 European Universities Championships will be organised from November 6-8, 2009 in Ljubljana (SLO). The aim of the con-vention is to give information and support to the organisers of the European Universities Championships in 2010. . Present on the convention will be also the EUSA Technical Delegates and Officials. EUSA will next year organise championships in 12 sports. The dates of the championships will be confirmed on the next EUSA Executive Committee Meeting, which will be organised in Zadar (CRO) from October 15-18, 2009.

EUSA GENERALASSEMBLYThe 11th EUSA General Assembly will be held in Vienna (AUT) from December 4-6, 2009. EUSA Member Federa-tion will receive the official invitation and more information in the next days. The host of the event, the Austrian Uni-versity Sports Organisation will at the same time organise also the University Sports Conference and Gala Dinner to celebrate the 10th EUSA Anniversary.

EUSA PATRONAGEThe 2009 Friendship Games organised by EUSA Patronage in Eilat (ISR) came to an impressive end at the southern city of Arad, in a beautiful event at the King Solomon Mines. 16 Teams from 10 different countries participated this year in this basketball games, 10 teams in the Men’s tournament and 6 in the Women’s tournament. In the finals of the wom-en’s event Russia won against Israel with 65-63, while in the men’s event Greece won against Lithuania 78-77.
