ANNEX

Since we began in 2015, the European Week of Sport has engaged more than 10 million Europeans in over 15,000 #BeActive events in 31 countries. This year, we are expanding our reach and impact with a ‘mobile first’ strategy that integrates mobile journalists – known as ‘mojos’ – into our campaign.

MOJO GUIDELINES

This handbook provides national coordinators, partners and mojos with all the information required to inspire and empower mojos to become part of the #BeActive movement.

Mojos can play a key role in gathering real-time content and unlocking the European dimension of the Week. Using just mobile devices, they have the power to inspire even more Europeans to get ‘on the move’ by sharing their local #BeActive experiences on social media.

With photos from school sport festivals to live interview streams with #BeActive am-bassadors, mojos can bring #BeActive to life

for citizens across the continent. As amateur or professional journalists, videographers and photographers, mojos can capture all the inspirational #BeActive moments we want Europe to see, read and hear.

For those involved in previous editions of the Week, this should come as a welcome continuation of your excellent work at the national, regional and local levels. We want to maximise the quantity, increase the quality, and boost the speed of the content you deliver as we strive to promote sport and physical activity across Europe.

Mobile journalists are telling riveting stories with little

more than a smartphone in hand. Let’s get mojos on the

move for #BeActive. TIBOR NAVRACSICSEUROPEAN COMMISSIONER FOR EDUCATION, CULTURE, YOUTH AND SPORT

The Week has five focus themes - sport in education, workplaces, outdoors, sport clubs and fitness centres.

The Week brings together 32 national coordinators from across Europe and over 35 partners from the sport movement. The #BeActive campaign that promotes the Week kicks off on Olympic Day (23 June), which also celebrates healthy and active lifestyles for people of all ages.

This is a truly European initiative. The involvement of national coordinators, European partners, national members and organisers is essential to the success of the Week.

The Week is the European Commission’s response to the inactivity crisis facing all Member States. The 2014 Eurobarometer shows

that engagement in sport and physical activity is at an all-time low in Europe.

In many Member States, this is a trend getting worse, not better. It is not just people’s health and well-being that suffers; it is our society and economy overall.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has identified inactivity as the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality. Lack of exercise has been directly linked to several

types of cancer, diabetes, and cardio-vascular diseases.

A 2015 study by the Centre for Economics and Business Research estimates that inactivity kills half a million Europeans and generates over 80 billion EUR in healthcare

costs each year.

#BeActive is part of the European Commission’s response to these alarming trends.

The European Week of Sport aims to promote sport and physical activity across Europe, taking place annually from 23-30 September. The Week is for everyone, regardless of age, background or fitness level. With a focus on grassroots initiatives, it inspires Europeans to #BeActive on a regular basis and creates opportunities in peoples’ everyday lives to exercise more.

INACTIVITY CRISIS

ABOUT THE WEEK

INTRODUCTION

WHY MOBILE JOURNALISM?

Mobile journalists gather, edit and publish stories using only a mobile phone or tablet. They are now an integral part of journalistic practice, especially during live and breaking news events. While it once took an entire crew to capture a moment, today all it takes is a mobile device.

With high-tech cameras and the latest apps, mojos can produce high-quality content on the go with relative ease. This includes photos, videos, text, GIFs and more. Using live streams, they can share content in real time.

#BeActive mojos can create content for National Coordinating Bodies (NCBs) and partners, and for the #BeActive website and social media accounts. Using their content, you can generate grassroots support for #BeActive in your country as well as create visibility for your activities at the European level.

National coordinators and partners have unique stories to tell about the events and activities in your country. #BeActive mojos can be your eyes, ears and voice to deliver these stories.

MOJO GUIDELINES

BENEFITS OF MOBILE JOURNALISM

Promoting authentic, emotional and inspiring stories is at the heart of getting more people to #BeActive, and mojos are key to delivering on it.

While technical skill is vital, so is passion for the subject and motivation to succeed. That is why we encourage embracing amateur mojos too. While not always technically perfect, they may approach stories in a fresh, new way that can generate even more likes, views and shares.

While technical skill is vital, so is passion for the subject

and motivation to succeed.

Mojos should have experience in using mobile devices for content creation and dissemination. This includes photo and video recording and editing skills, good knowledge of different social media channels, familiarity with different mobile apps, as well as experience with live streaming.

Experienced mojos can quickly report and edit narratives in pictures, GIFs, sound bites and video to tell inspiring stories with diverse appeal. Mojos should be able to complete the whole content production process from planning to publishing.

Possible mojo profiles include:

Social media managers passionate about storytelling;

Online influencers;

Reporters skilled in digital media;

Motivated members in your network/organisation.

06

WORKING TOGETHER

The #BeActive editorial team will serve as the central, campaign hub responsible for gathering national content and disseminating it on official campaign channels (the #BeActive website and social media channels).

A European network of #BeActive mojos consists of all mobile journalist reporting from #BeActive events throughout Europe. The network facilitates the dissemination of local content on the European level.

If you are organising several events throughout the country, consider working with multiple mojos who can cover regions or cities.Designated contacts at NCBs and partner organisations should deliver new content to the central team for dissemination to take place.

We encourage you to identify at least one #BeActive mojo who will report on the national events during the Week.

MOJO GUIDELINES

Content from mojos should reflect #BeActive values while maintaining the editorial standards of the Week. While content should be people-focused and inspiring, it must remain accurate and protect the credibility of the #BeActive brand.

EDITORIAL GUIDELINES

#BEACTIVE INSPIRES PEOPLE TO BE MORE ACTIVE

The #BeActive brand inspires Europeans to exercise more during their everyday lives.

#BEACTIVE PROMOTES RESPECT AND FAIR PLAY

Sport activities help create friendships, and teach us respect.

#BEACTIVE BRINGS PEOPLE TOGETHER

Sport and physical activity inspire and connect people.

#BEACTIVE STRENGTHENS COMMUNITIES

Sport activities can play a powerful role in promoting social cohesion by integrating minority and marginalised groups

Reporting may take on a more personal tone, adding an important personal touch that helps to build the #BeActive movement. Nevertheless, they should still:

Deliver reliable and unbiased content in line with the #BeActive messages;

Favour accuracy over speed;

Engage with social media followers rather than talk at them;

Make content clear and concise (understandable for non-native readers);

Be aware of the audience and tailor content accordingly.

MOJO MESSAGING BEST PRACTICES

A #BeActive society is healthy, happy

and inclusive.

Mojos can amplify #BeActive messages by integrating them into speaking points or text in social media posts.

The overarching message of the week:

A #BeActive society is healthy, happy and inclusive.

We have developed six sets of messages – one for #BeActive in general, and five others for each focus theme (education, workplace, outdoors, sport clubs, and fitness centres). See the annex for a list of all messages.

OUR VALUES

The #BeActive values below are reflected across the campaign and should be reflected in content from mojos.

#BEACTIVE IS FOR EVERYONE

Sport and physical activity are for all regardless of age, background or fitness level.

#BEACTIVE BOOSTS HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

Sport and physical activity have a universal appeal and are good for physical and mental well-being.

DON’T… DO…

Get into disputes.

Express personal views inconsistent with #BeActive

messages.

Damage the reputation of the European Week of Sport

and European Commission.

Perform with professional skill and care.

Act with respect and personal integrity, and aim for excellence.

Observe and comply with instructions from the

editorial team.

Have fun. It helps make your content contagious.

CONTENT TO PRODUCE

While there has been a shift towards more bite-size content, we still aim to produce informative, entertaining and engaging content. Feel free to suggest stories to the editorial team anytime.

Just ask yourself first: is this content adding value to #BeActive and its coverage?

Below are the types of content we recommend producing. Wherever possible, content should be branded with the #BeActive logo.

VIDEOSWith all major social media channels favouring video content and live streams, short video footage can significantly improve reach and drive engagement. Videos should be short and social media-friendly.

PHOTOSEye-catching visuals are consistently among the best-performing posts on social media. Capture event highlights with photos of people who are being active (avoid passive shots), branded with the #BeActive logo. Make use of the official #BeActive branded photos in our database.

GIFS AND BOOMERANGSAnimated visuals are a great tool for showing movement. Download Instagram’s Boomerang app to easily make photo animations made of four consecutive shots.

AMBASSADOR CONTENTMojos can report on the activity of #BeActive ambassadors when they are participating in events or visiting schools and workplaces. Mojos can film short interviews and snap some behind-the-scenes shots.

INTERVIEWSGet positive and inspirational stories from people during #BeActive events with interviews that relate to key campaign messages and themes. Keep questions short (no more than three to four), sharp and on-topic.

PHOTO-VIDEO COMPETITIONWhile mojos should not participate themselves in the #BeActive challenge, they can motivate others with great examples of visual material showing different ways to #BeActive.

HARDWARE SOCIAL MEDIA TIPS

Creating a story with a mobile device is similar to traditional reporting, but with a few important exceptions and considerations. We have outlined the most common hardware used below.

Grip (stabiliser) to stabilise shots on the move.

Tripod / Handheld Rig / Selfie Stick to stabilise shots.

Microphone and headphones to enhance audio quality.

Power bank and memory ensures stable, secure electricity and memory. For extra storage, consider using a cloud service, external hard drive, flash drive, or SIM card.

Be consistent All posts must include the #BeActive hashtag. Keep the #BeActive hashtag in English for tracking purposes and consistency with the #BeActive brand.

Be multilingual Publish content in your own national language and in English. Do include hashtags in your national language relevant to your audience.

Be integrated Mention @EUSport in tweets and link to the campaign website when appropriate.

Be creative Offer incentives and make posts entertaining to inspire more engagement.

Be timely Leverage other high-profile events linked to #BeActive messages.

Be repetitive Share posts multiple times to improve reach.

Be engaging Ask questions, call on people to #BeActive, tag a friend, or create conversations with your audience.

Be compelling Create exclusive, insider content from behind the scenes.

Be smart Capitalise on available #BeActive assets using our multi-media, mascot, emojis and more.

TIPS ON FILMING AND EDITING

APPS FOR FILMING AND EDITING

When live streaming on an app or Facebook Live, notify the official social media team for cross-promotion.

Use airplane mode to stop calls and notifications while shooting. If you are live streaming, switch to Do Not Disturb since airplane mode will cut your data connection.

Clean the camera lens.

Check if your battery is fully charged and pack an external battery.

Check the available memory on your device and bring an external storage device.

Test the Internet connection if you are going live.

If you are interviewing, use an external microphone to ensure high-quality sound.

Shoot horizontally to give users wider footage and improve their visual experience.

Keep shots or images still by using stabilisers or moving as little as possible.

Zoom with your feet, not the button. It reduces the quality.

Ensure your hand is not blocking the microphone on your phone.

Test the audio before you start filming.

Giving more value to sport and physical activity in all kinds of educational settings helps Ministers of Education lay the foundation for healthy life habits that can last into adulthood.

Physical activity does not need to be limited to sport classes and can be integrated into different subject disciplines, as well as between classes.

Physical education (PE) classes should be designed to be fun and appealing to both girls and boys and consider the different abilities, cultures, and backgrounds of all students.

Supporting PE teachers, and those of all subjects, to develop the skills necessary to deliver a more active curriculum.

Educational environments could benefit from reaching out to sport organisations at a local level to fill gaps in expertise and equipment.

Helping children understand the positive impact of sport and physical activity each day, no matter how little, can help them develop important life skills.
