From the Directors’ BoxA warm welcome to the Koolpak Sta-

dium. We extend our hospitality tothe officials, players, staff and support-ers of Poole Town, I hope you enjoyyour time with us, and have a safe jour-ney home.I’d also like to extend a warm welcometo the directors of Koolpak and theirguests, who as well as being our mainsponsors this season are also ourmatch sponsors today. We’re delightedto have Koolpak on board as our spon-sors and it’s great to see them regularlycoming to games as well. These notes had to be written beforethe FA Cup game against Newport sodepending on how that went, and thecup draw if we won, we could be spend-ing a month on the road before our nexthome game at the end of September. In the meantime, we’re playing thefourth of four back to back home gamesagainst our local rivals Poole Town –the one I’m sure most of us were look-ing for when the fixtures were finallyannounced last month.Of course, this time last year there were2 divisions separating us from today’sopponents but after relegation was ago-nisingly confirmed from NationalLeague South for Poole on the last dayof the season and our well documented‘surprise’ promotion in July, we find our-selves facing each other in league ac-tion again for the first time in five years.

We’ve enjoyed the odd tussle in theDorset Senior Cup in the interveningperiod – including a couple of wins forWimborne in that period – but nothingbeats a proper league encounter as I’msure the healthy crowd today will con-firm.The teams have of course alreadyplayed each other this season in a pre-season match at Hamworthy, and if youweren’t there I’m sure you’ve heardabout it. In truth it was not the club’sfinest hour with 4 sent off and nor was ita great advert for Dorset football. I’msure neither club will want to see a re-peat of that today and whilst I’m sure itwill be a competitive and feisty match,I’m equally sure both managers will bereminding the players that cool headsare required this time round!Enjoy the game.

From the Dugout

Hello everyone and welcome toour Bank Holiday home gamev Poole Town, I would like to

welcome the players, staff and sup-porters of Poole Town to Wimbornefor the game this afternoon.

Today’s league game would not haveeven entered anybody’s thoughtssome months ago, with Poole playingin the Conference South and us play-ing in the Southern West division. Those months have now fast forwardand here we are both playing for avital three points to help our leaguecampaigns.

We hope that today will bring a crowdsimilar to our excellent play-off finalcrowd where the Cuthbury waspacked with an incredible atmos-phere. All players love to play in frontof a big crowd and with our two homeleague games attracting over 500and 300 respectively the lads havereally enjoyed the atmosphere thatthis has brought.

Our home win against Harrow Bor-ough was a fantastic result and per-formance. Not only to record our firstSouthern Premier win for the club but,the manner of the performance wasgreat to see. After finding ourselvestwo nil down and playing well, wekept the belief and deserved the goalbefore half time. Second half we wereexcellent. Speaking to the Harrowmanager after the game, he was fullof praise in the way we played. Thisgame against a strong Harrow side

with some really good players willgive us great confidence moving for-ward.

Luke Holmes is still on his slow re-covery from his virus, Will Prior is inthe latter stages of his rehab with Benand we soon hope that he can be giv-en the all clear to start games. Curtisshould be back today after his familywedding and Lee Francis is backfrom his holiday.

I hope you all enjoy the game thisafternoon.

Best wishes

From the Dressing Room

Hi, and welcome to our fourthhome game running, and gamesdon’t come much bigger than a

long-awaited league match againstneighbours Poole Town. After a home defeat in their first fixture,Poole had a couple of good wins atSalisbury and Basingstoke. Similarly welost our opening game, at Farnborough, but had to wait for our third fixture to getour first points. It was a great feeling for the boys to getthat first historic win for the club at thislevel against Harrow. The longer you gowithout getting three points then youstart feeling edgy and tense up.After the disappointment of not gettinganything at Farnborough when we heldthe lead at half-time, we struggledagainst Dorchester on the Tuesdaynight. Conceding an early goal was thelast thing we wanted, especially afterDorch had lost their opening game athome. It gave them confidence, and wesoon saw that they had some goodplayers in key areas. Their wingerswere both good and gave our full-backsa hard time. But we got to grips with thegame in the second period, and finishedstrongly. It was a bit cat-and-mouse to start withagainst Harrow Borough on the Satur-day. We found ourselves 2-0 down afterabout half an hour, but both were poorgoals from our point of view. The first, from a corner, came off Bill and wrong-footed us. We gave the ball away inmidfield for the second, but then beganto grow into the game. Quick thinking byJordan, Burbs and Toby gave us a foot-hold just before the break. Then, in thesecond period, only their keeper, who

had an absolute blinder, and some iffyoffside decisions kept them in the gamefor a while. The new boys have settled in well. Cur-tis is a real live-wire, and is an honestlad; I thought Jordan had a great sec-ond half against Harrow; and Lewis isan out and out defender, and reallystrong on the ball.I’ve been asked many times what I thinkthe differences are at this level, and forme there’s a couple - the tempo thegame is played at, you have to be onfull throttle for the whole game, and howclinical the finishing is, if you have asniff then you’ve got to take it.As well as three points, there’s localpride at stake today. Lewis and Burbshave played for Poole, and they includea couple of faces you’ll recognise - SamGriffin and Franklyn Clarke, both ofwhom Cussy brought to Wimborne. The boys really enjoy playing in front ofthe big crowds we’re getting at the“Koolpak” this season, and your greatsupport certainly helps. It should bequite a game this afternoon.I hope you enjoy the occasion and thegame.

Wimborne Town 5 Harrow Borough 3 - 18 Aug 2018 - Graham Dunn reportsIn the first-ever meeting between thetwo teams, Wimborne came from 2-0behind to get their first season at Step3 up and running at the third attempt. With play-maker Luke Holmes unwell,Manager Matty Holmes gave recentsigning Curtis Young his first start. Fit-again Lewis Tallack returned to the de-fensive line, and James Stokoe was onthe team-sheet for the first time thisseason, albeit on the bench. As Wimborne made a nervous start, itwas Harrow who had the better of theopening exchanges with skipper RyanMoss nudging Lewis Cole's corner overthe line to give his team the lead on 12minutes.Wimborne struggled to get to grips withthe fluid movement of the visitors’ at-tack, and on 33 minutes Michael Bryanseized on a mis-placed pass in midfieldto coolly double Harrow's lead. After conceding four first-half goals onTuesday night against Dorchester, thehome faithful were apprehensive. Witha 2-0 scoreline, the next goal is oftencrucial and so it proved in this game.Four minutes before the interval Wim-borne pulled one back. Toby Holmeslifted Luke Burbidge's pass from JordanLee’s quick throw-in, over keeperHafed Al-Droubi. And Holmes’ thirdgoal in three games changed the mo-mentum of the game.Wimborne looked increasingly danger-ous at the start of the second period, partly due to Harrow’s high defensiveline. And it was no real surprise whenthe Magpies equalised on 54 minutes.Another quick throw gave Burbidgetime to feed the lively Young. As hesurged into the area he was broughtdown by Shaun Preddie. Referee San-

doe pointed to the spot, and JackLovell rifled the penalty home.On 65 minutes Harrow's Mark Mcleodwas shown a straight red for a lunge onYoung. And almost immediately hisside fell behind when Sam Davidsonwas quickest to react at a free-kick af-ter Lovell’s attempt at the back postwas saved.Harrow were reduced to 9 men after 70minutes when Preddie was shown asecond yellow for a foul on the elusiveBurbidge.Wimborne flooded forwards, and onlydefiant rearguard action by the excel-lent Al-Droubi, playing the role ofsweeper as well as keeper, denied thehosts a hat-full as he used head, shoul-ders, knees and toes in giving a goal-keeping master-class.But even Al-Droubi couldn’t keep Wim-borne’s rampant attackers at bay. Ste-fan Penny fed Young on 80 minutesand the youngster opened his accountfor the Magpies to make it 4-2.George Moore pulled one back for Har-row on 87 minutes, before Holmesmade the game safe two minutes later. That’s 14 goals in 2 home games - nowthat’s what I call entertainment.

Beginnings - Poole FC were formed on20th September 1890 by the merger be-tween two local sides, Poole Rovers andPoole Hornets, who can trace their ori-gins back to 1880, thus the club cele-brated their centenary in 1980 with somehigh profile games against the likes ofMan Utd, WBA and Man City. The Recent Years:2000 – 2008 The new millennium sawthe club continue to stride forward butfurther silverware remained just beyondtheir grasp despite becoming a force inevery league they played in. Starting inthe Hants Premier division the Dolphinsfinished runners-up in 2000-01, 5th in2001-02, 4th in 2002-03, and 3rd in2003-04. Re-alignment of the leagues forthe 2004-05 season saw them join thenewly formed Wessex Division 2 andgain promotion finishing runners-up toLymington Town FC.2006-07 Poole joined the top flight of theWessex and gained a credible 8th in themuch tougher league. For the 2006-07the division was renamed Wessex Pre-mier and Poole started promisingly againbut finished in 4th.In this period there has been some goodcup runs too. Poole reached the Trophy-man League Cup quarter-finals in both2002-03 and 2003-04 and the latter yearalso saw the Dolphins reach the semi-final of the Dorset Senior Cup losing 1-2to Gillingham. They repeated the featagain in 2006-07 losing the semi-final toSherborne by the same margin. 2005-06saw them get to the Dorset Senior Cupfinal but lost to Hamworthy.Their first year in the Wessex in 2004-05saw them reach the semi-finals of theLeague cup losing to Thatcham Townover two legs, and the following season

they reached the semi’s again, losing outto Andover that year. The club moved to its current home atTatnam Farm during this period and con-tinual ground improvements saw theerection of a stand and bar and refresh-ment facilities and great improvementsto the club house and area in general.Poole led the way in the league for muchof the 2007-08 season slipping up earlyin the new year to eventually finish 4thonce more. They also had a good run inthe F.A. Vase reaching the 4th round butagain suffered disappointment on theirother cup competitions.2008 to date - Sustained Success atlast - That elusive Silverware finally ar-rived in the 2008/9 season. Poole Townwon the Wessex Premier title and wereto finish as the second best team of1,600 Football Association clubs in thewhole of England, based on points permatch, with the following record: played42, won 38, drawn 2, lost 2. They alsowon the Dorset Senior Cup (beatingDorchester 2-0 aet), in a thriller at Wey-mouth’s Radipole Lane ground andreached the semi finals of the LeagueCup. They were, however denied promo-tion to level 4 due to inadequate groundgrading at the Tatnam. They won the Wessex League title againin 2009-10 by an impressive 18 pointsand reached the final of the League Cup,but again failed to gain promotion afterthe plans to build a new ground at Brack-some Rec fell through. The real coup forthe 09/10 season was more personnel,Top goalscorer, Charlie Austin made thesuccessful leap from Poole to SwindonTown in the Football League Division Oneand subsequently to Burnley in the Cham-pionship, as an established talent.

2010/11 and Poole reached the F.A.Vase semi finals losing out to WhitleyBay. They also won Wessex Premier titlefor the third successive season, and atlast gained promotion back to their spiri-tual home in the Southern League after a15 year absence having finally been giv-en permission to make improvements tothe ground to take advantage of the of-fered promotion. The first season back in 2011-12 sawthem make a late charge to secure sec-ond place behind Champions Bideford. They beat Hungerford convincingly in theplay-off Semi’s and were minutes awayfrom winning the Final against Gosport. But hopes of a second straight promo-tion were dashed by two late goals fromSteve Claridge to send Gosport up to theSouthern Premier.2012-2013 saw the club win the South-ern South & West Division by 14 pointsin addition they won the Dorset SeniorCup, being 4 – 1 winners over WimborneTown at The County Ground, and finishup with a treble winning the SouthernLeague Championship Trophy matchbeating Central Division championsBurnham – 1 – 0 on their own ground. Thus for 2013/2014 promotion to thenow named Calor League Premier Divi-sion was achieved.2013/14 saw a 7th place finish and alsodisappointment coming so close to a FACup 1st Rd spot losing out to Confer-ence South side Staines Town in a re-play at Poole. Off the field by the end ofMarch a new clubhouse, dressing roomimprovements, new covered standing, new seating installed, new boardroom, new office, new tea bar and new toiletswere in place.

2014/15 saw the club in the mix for pro-motion to Conference South throughoutthe season unfortunately the final resultssaw them fall short losing a final daymatch to Corby Town who won the title. The club won the Red Insure SouthernLeague Cup for the first time drawing0–0 with Corby Town at Tatnam, Pooletaking the trophy on the away goals ruleafter their 1–1 at draw at Corby. Theywere also the winners of the Fair Playaward for the Premier Division. Thenewly formed U21 side won the DorsetU21 Development League and the U18’sreached the 1 st Rd Proper of the F.A.Youth Cup losing out to Torquay Utd.The players from the previous seasonstayed together and 2015/2016 saw theclub go one better and achieve promo-tion as champions of the Southern Pre-mier Division winning the title by amargin of 9 points from 2nd place Red-ditch Utd.The club lost out v Whitehawk in the FACup 4th Qualifying Rd down in Brighton.Which means over the last 9 seasonsthe club has won 5 league titles andbeen runners-up on 2 occasions.2016/17 saw a 5th place finish in Nation-al League South but no play-off placedue to ground grading issues despitemajor ground improvements once againat Tatnam to stave off threats of demo-tion. Tatnam was re-named the BlackGold Stadium. Poole Town U18’s alsoreached the 2nd Rd Proper of the FAYouth Cup losing out to Leyton Orient atPoole in front of a 300+ crowd.2017/2018 saw a final day relegationwith the club dropping back into theSouthern Premier after 2 seasons.

Wimborne Town was formed in 1878 and became a founder member of the DorsetCounty FA in 1887.In the 1930’s the Club won the Dorset Division Two title three times, the Dorset JuniorChallenge Cup twice and the Dorset Junior Amateur Cup four times.Wimborne’s first senior honour came in 1937 with the Dorset Senior Amateur Cup, afeat not repeated until 1964. In 1981, Wimborne won the Dorset League Division Onechampionship without losing a match. The same year, Wimborne joined the WesternLeague and finished third in Division One in 1984/85.Wimborne joined the Wessex League in 1987 and so began a glittering chapter in theClub’s history. Over the following 22 years they won the Wessex League three times(1991/2, 1993/93 & 1999/00) and lifted the Wessex League Cup in 1993/94 to becomethe first team to achieve the League and Cup double. They repeated that feat in1999/00 and also won the Dorset Senior Challenge Cup in 1991/92 and 1996/97.Wimborne also have a history of achievement in FA competitions. In 1982/83, theyreached the FA Cup First Round where they played Aldershot, then a league side. Thedream ended there, however, with a 4-0 defeat. And in 1992, the Club reached the FA Vase final, becoming the first Dorset club to playat Wembley. Under manager Alex Pike, the Magpies lifted the trophy with a 5-3 winover holders Guiseley. That same season, Wimborne also won the Dorset Senior Chal-lenge Cup and Wessex League championship to complete an historic treble triumph.2009/10 was another milestone for the Magpies as they gained promotion to the South-ern League for the first time in the Club’s history. After a difficult first two seasons Wim-borne, became established in the league finishing mid table and gaining more pointseach season. In 2014/15, after a run of 4 victories, the Magpies reached the FA Trophy first roundproper for the first time in the club’s history. A 3-0 home defeat by Oxford City of theConference North ended the excitement.A disappointing start to the 2015/16 season led to Steve Cuss resigning as Manager inNovember. Club stalwart Paul Roast took over as caretaker boss before Simon Brownewas appointed as Manager, During this time new Directors came on board, but “duediligence” of the finances uncovered a large deficit. Despite the playing budget beingslashed, and most of the squad leaving, relegation was avoided. Off the field, a greateffort led to the financial position being resolved. For the 2016/17 season there was renewed optimism with a new Board in place. MattyHolmes took over as Manager, and assembled a strong but young squad whichachieved our then highest position in the Southern League of 11th.Holmes and his team improved on that in 2017-18, finishing 3rd on 77 points, havingscored over 100 goals, and winning the Dorset Senior Cup for the first time in 21 yearsalong the way. The euphoria of those achievements were muted by a play-off final de-feat by Swindon Supermarine in a penalty shoot-out. However, the restructuring ofleagues at Steps 3 and 4, and the demise of Shaw Lane FC led to a late promotion forWimborne as the highest performing team not already promoted. This means that for2018-19 the Magpies will be playing at Step 3 for the first time in their history.

Ask a Wimborne Town supporter whoour biggest rivals are and they’ll proba-bly tell you it’s Poole Town. Ask aPoole fan who they like to beat mostand they might say it’s Weymouth. Andask a Weymouth follower and they’relikely to say it’s Dorchester Town!Whatever history tells us, though, thisseason we’ll all be rivals. For the firsttime ever, all four of the big Dorsetclubs are playing in the same division. And that means twelve local derbiesbefore we even consider the DorsetSenior Cup or the Southern LeagueCup. Add Salisbury to the mix and youcan imagine how the various FinanceDirectors are rubbing their hands to-gether!But what about Wimborne Town &Poole Town? Well, despite the fact thetwo towns are less than seven milesapart, this is only the seventh season intheir history (or, at least, in the past 100years) that the two clubs have been inthe same division. And all those sevenseasons have been this century. In 2006/07, Poole Town’s comebackcontinued with them being promoted tothe Wessex Premier; they played therefor five seasons and for the first four ofthose they faced the Magpies. ThenPoole spent two seasons with Wim-borne in the Southern League DivisionOne South & West on their climb to thegiddy heights of the National League. That success halted abruptly last sea-son, at the same time the Magpieswere (just!) making it into the SouthernLeague Premier. So, how have we fared in our 12league meetings so far? Well, braceyourself Magpie fans as the answeris….not very well!!

Here are all the results:2006/07 Wessex Premier (Wimbornefinished 6th; Poole finished 4th)Wimborne Town 0-0 Poole TownPoole Town 1-0 Wimborne Town2007/08 Wessex Premier (Wimbornefinished 3rd; Poole finished 4th)Poole Town 2-0 Wimborne TownWimborne Town 0-1 Poole Town2008/09 Wessex Premier (Wimbornefinished 4th; Poole finished top)Wimborne Town 2-2 Poole TownPoole Town 1-5 Wimborne Town2009/10 Wessex Premier (Wimbornefinished 2nd; Poole finished top)Poole Town 0-3 Wimborne TownWimborne Town 2-3 Poole Town2011/12 Southern League DivisionOne South (Wimborne finished 19th;Poole finished 2nd)Wimborne Town 0-1 Poole TownPoole Town 3-1 Wimborne Town2012/13 Southern League DivisionOne South & West (Wimborne finished12th; Poole finished top)Poole Town 1-0 Wimborne TownWimborne Town 0-2 Poole TownSo, Wimborne have won just two of thetwelve league meetings with Poole win-ning eight and two being drawn. Bothof Wimborne’s wins have come at Tat-nam; 5-1 in 08/09 and 3-0 in 09/10. Inthe six seasons, Wimborne have fin-ished above Poole just the once – in2007/08 in the Wessex League whenwe finished 3rd, one spot above theDolphins. In knockout cups, it’s a different storywith the two clubs being drawn againsteach other frequently in the DorsetSenior Cup. However, we’ve only evermet Poole Town once in national cup

competitions. That came in the FA Cupin 1993/94 when the Magpies tri-umphed 2-0 here at Cuthbury followinga 0-0 draw at the Stadium. We’ve nev-er faced each other in either the FATrophy or the FA Vase. We’ve met twice in League Cup com-petitions. In 2008/09 in the WessexLeague Cup, Poole won 4-0 here atCuthbury and in 2012/13, Wimborne

won 3-0, also here at Cuthbury. Andwe’ve met 12 times in the past 30 yearsin the Dorset Senior Cup with Poolewinning nine times and Wimborne com-ing out on top three times.Overall then, there’s no doubt thatPoole Town have been dominant in thisfixture with eighteen wins to Wim-borne’s seven over the past 30 years.Time for the pendulum to swing?

Having gone to St Cuthburga's HighSchool (which was at the top of StJohn's Hill) and Queen Elizabeth'sGrammar School and never havinglived more than 10 miles from Wim-borne, it is hardly surprising that I havesuch a connection and the warmestfeelings aboutthe town. I havealso been work-ing for the Stourand Avon Maga-zine for morethan 29 years, covering eventsin and aroundthe area.Yes, it haschanged andwith the new -and controver-sial - develop-ments that arecurrently beingbuilt, and therewill be furtherchanges asmore peoplemove into thearea to enjoyWimborne'smany facilities. And it does have so much to commendit. With tourist attractions such as Wim-borne Minster church, the Priest'sHouse Museum and the Model Town, and with Kingston Lacy almost on thedoorstep, it is hardly surprising thatWimborne attracts many visitors, who inturn want to live in the area.

There is so much to do too for thosewho move to the town. With the verysuccessful football, rugby, cricket, bowlsand tennis clubs - to name just a few ofits sporting attractions - there are plentyof activities throughout the year. TheEast Dorset Heritage Trust and the U3A

also offer numer-ous activities notto mention thelibrary, the Allen-dale Centre andthe CommunityLearning and Re-source Centre. One of the maincriticisms regard-ing the newneighbourhoodsis the lack of in-creased infra-structure, and it istrue that accessto Wimborne ismade over threenarrow, historicbridges. Conges-tion is likely tooccur. Howeveron the plus sideadditional hous-

ing should bring prosperity to business-es in the town. Already Wimborne isknown for its 'cafe society' with so manymore places to eat and socialise thattowns in the surrounding area.Wimborne has so much to offer, with itsfascinating history, beautiful rivers andattractive buildings. Why wouldn't one spend most of one'slife in Wimborne?

What's your job on Radio Solent?I'm hired on a matchday as the 'nonleague guy'. This season I'm commen-tating every game on Havant & Water-looville. But long after the game hasfinished I'll still be in the stadium talkingabout Wimborne, Hamworthy, the Dor-set Premier League etc for the podcast.

What do you like most about your job?Getting to visit somany different plac-es and making newfriends throughoutthe non-leaguecommunity.What's your sportinghistory? Two goals and acup winners medalfor the school foot-ball team was thepeak of my sportingendeavour! As afan have been to theWorld Cup, Euros,Olympics and theFA Cup final.Who is your favourite football team andplayer - professional and non-league?Watching Fareham Town when I was atschool got me hooked on non-leaguefootball. Nathan Ashmore has alwaysbeen a favourite player. He keeps goalfor Ebbslfeet, but when he was at Gos-port I saw him come up for a corner andscore a late equaliser at Cuthbury. What was the first game you went to?Portsmouth 3 Blackburn Rovers 0 (non-league Fareham Town 2 Willen-hall Town 1) - both in the 80s.

Which is your favourite ground to visit?I've worked at Wembley, in the com-mentary box and on the touchline whichwas hugely memorable, but also likethe homely grounds like Privett Parkand Cuthbury where the fans are friend-ly and like to have a chat. What advice would you give to a young-ster who'd like a career in sports jour-nalism?

This season our Development Squadwill compete in the Wyvern Combina-tion Premier Division, which includesteams from Poole Town, WinchesterCity, and Salisbury City FC. The major-ity of the league matches will be playedon Saturdays, coupled with our strongSouth West Counties U18 squad whoalso compete on Saturdays, this willmean that Matty and our 1st TeamCoaching team have a pool of 36 WT-FC 'youth' players that throughout theirlong season they could call upon. Our Development Squad's manage-ment duo of Darren Shepherd andChris Wright travelled with a youthfulsquad to The Crest Finance Stadium,Portchester for their first league matchof the season. AFC Portchester fieldeda very experienced team whilst WTFCstarted with three 16 years olds (Year1's) including Cam Smith and LouisMcWilliams who made their debuts forour club. The other 16 year old wasWTFC's goalkeeper Ed Phillips. Therest of our squad were Year 2's and justfour Year 3 players.AFC Portchester pressed hard straightfrom the kick-off and put WTFC underconstant pressure but a very swift coun-ter attack from WTFC saw Rob Okumubreak away and shoot just wide. WTFCsoaked up more pressure from thehosts but our defence prevented AFCPortchester from creating any clearchances. The action flowed from end toend with half chances falling Wim-borne's way, Cam Smith shooting widefrom an excellent cross from HarryWright, also Aidan Shepherd headedwide from a clever quick short cornerroutine. Ollie Osborne was the nextWimborne player to shoot over the

Portchester bar following another WT-FC corner. On 38 minutes Aidan Shepherd collect-ed the ball and swiftly turned his markerand shot just wide. Before half-timeAFC Portchester piled on the pressureon the WTFC goal and deep into injurytime Ed Phillips produced a fine divingsave to ensure that both teams wentinto the half-time break level at 0-0.Darren's team talk was of praise forWTFC defensive qualities and to try toexploit the spaces that will occur duringthe second half, especially with RobOkumu's pace.Wimborne Town started the second halfwith more possession in the Portchesterhalf and a lovely through ball from LouisMcWilliams split their defence but theirkeeper saved very bravely at AidanShepherd's feet. Just five minutes laterLouis McWilliams found space behindPortchester's full back and Rob Okumuwas in on goal but saw his shot narrow-ly bounce the wrong side of the post.In the 58th minute the deadlock wasfinally broken when a strong run byJosh Blake and a neat pass into AidanShepherd who took the ball on and ri-fled across the goalkeeper and hittingthe net off the inside of the far post. 0-1.Aidan keeps up his very impressive runof scoring in a Wimborne Town shirt. Our lead was quickly doubled withsome very neat interchange of shortpasses, then Harry Wright made a footof space for himself and smashed a ris-ing shot into the far corner of thePortchester net, 0-2 to WTFC.AFC Portchester made some changesup front and in the 70th minute they

scored with a neat goal following a veryclever turn and run from their No.8 Ash-ley Winning 1-2.Then AFC Portchester put WTFC underimmense pressure chasing the equalis-er but WTFC defensive unit includingour midfield stood firm. Will Fletcher(Year 1) was sent on to make his Wim-borne Town debut and he was a con-stant threat.Sam Haynes had a fine run and shotwhich the Portchester goalkeeper didvery well to palm away. WTFC keptlooking to push forward and followinganother quick counter-attack wereawarded a direct free kick 30 yards out.Charlie Tilsed calmly put the ball downand smashed a fierce low shot right intothe corner of the Portchester net. 1-3after 85 mins.WTFC continued to press hard and instoppage time Danny Hansford made avery strong run through a couple of

Portchester players and slipped in RobOkumu who outran their fullback andfinished very neatly for his deservedgoal. Full Time 1-4.Darren's Post match comments –A very pleasing opening start to theseason and mature performance fromour young team. The boys grew into thegame especially in the 2nd half. Attimes there was some lovely football ondisplay. We were really pleased withthe 4 - 16 year olds who all played verywell, this will certainly send out a goodmessage to all the other players withinour youth set up regarding our WTFCPlayer Pathway.Team: Ed Phillips, Danny Hansford,Charlie Tilsed, Ollie Osborne, SamHaynes, Josh Hall, Cam Smith, HarryWright, Louis McWilliams, Rob Okumu,Aidan Shepherd. Itwas a scissorkick and put it inthe top rightcorner. WeirdlyI scored a hat-trick in that game. What was the first live game you canremember going to? I think it was Bournemouth vs Lutonwhen I was about 4. Non-league thoughwas probably a Dorchester game. What did you learn from watching the2018 World Cup?That Neymar wouldn’t cut it at the Cuth-bury. I think he would struggle physicallyin this league. Also Ben the Physiowould be working overtime!

What’s the best advice you’ve been giv-en about playing?“Get Low” – Darren SheppardWhat’s your top ‘Keepy-Uppy’ score? Not sure exactly but I’ve made it pastthe 100 mark before. What other sports do you play?Tennis. I used to play competitively butquit to play more football. Love a knock

With the Magpies now playing at Step 3(and those are words I never thought I’dwrite!), it seems a good time to lookback at the programme for our gamewith Poole Town here in April 2010 – amatch that was to be our final homegame in the Wessex League.Poole had already won the league bythe time this game came along but theMagpies were desperate for points; weneeded three points from our final twogames to secure second place and pro-motion to the Southern League for thefirst time. The programme comprises 40 pagesincluding 4 pages of colour action pics. The cover (opposite) has a shot of 22-year-old centre back Dan Haysom andpage 3 lists the teams (on the followingpage). Then there’s Ken Stewart’sChairman’s comments in which he con-gratulates Poole Town as worthy cham-pions, commenting on their ability, determination & good management.Page 14 has a report of the Dorset Sen-ior Cup final between Gillingham Town& Wimborne Town which had beenplayed at Dorchester the previous week.A sad story, as many of us will remem-ber very well! It was goalless after 90minutes but when Lee Chudy put us infront in extra time it looked odds-on thecup was coming back to Cuthbury. Totheir credit, Gillingham had other ideas. They equalised in the second periodand then scored the winner from thespot in the final minute after Nick Hutch-ings had been fouled, retaliated and wassent off. Then there’s an article on “JamesStokoe – Wimborne’s Iron Man”! It

starts “If there was an award for mostimproved player at the Club this year, there’s no doubt James Stokoe wouldbe a leading contender. The form of the24-year-old striker turned midfielder hasbeen a revelation and his energy andenthusiasm has been a major factor inour success.” Still true today. There’s a rundown on the Poole Townmanagement & players and, as always, there’s lots of past and future Magpiesin amongst them including James Bai-ley-Pearce, Russell Cook, Kevin Gill,Micky Hubbard, Ross Lloyd, Carl Poore,Carl Preston, Taffy Richardson, SteveSmith & Dave Sturgess. Poole’s man-ager & assistant manager (Tommy Kil-lick & Gavin Reeves) were ex-Cuthburyplayers and coach Steve Cuss was des-tined to play a major part in WimborneTown history, both on and of the pitch,in the coming years.Later in the programme we have all thestatistics from Wimborne’s 23 seasonsin the Wessex League. And they’re im-pressive. In all, we played 920 WessexLeague games, winning 543, losing 195& drawing 182 – a winning percentageof over 59%. We won the Wessex titlethree times, the Wessex League Cupthree times and the Dorset Senior Cuponce. Oh, and we won the FA Vase too.We scored 2,167 goals and conceded1,070 and finished lower than 8th onlyonce. As the article says “Our time inthe Wessex League has coincided withthe greatest period in the Club’s historyand, if this is to be our final season, wecan look back with pride on what we’veachieved since 1987.”

The player stats in the programme showthat James Stokoe had started 49 of the50 games so far, with James Wilson(what a good full-back James was!)starting 46. Sam Lockyer & Liam Greenhad each taken part in 47 games whileour top scorer was Scott Joyce – theStriker Supreme – with 29 goals from 32starts & 7 sub appearances. And stillknocking them in for Christchurch. Finally, there’s manager Alex Browne’snotes. He congratulates Poole on theirtitle and thanks his management teamof Magpie legends Darren Powell &Jamie Sturgess. Alex will always be

remembered as the man who took usout of the Wessex League and into theSouthern League. A good bloke and agood manager. For the record, we lost 3-2 to PooleTown that day (our goals from LeeChudy & Kev James) and so it all wentdown to the wire at Alrsford two dayslater. On a nerve-shredding evening,we won 3-1 and bade farewell – andthank you – to the Wessex League.

Non-League Paper Programme Column - Adam Ellis“There’s no place like home.”For many of us, our local grounds arelike a second home; they bring comfortand a familiarity, and if you’re lucky acomfy seat with a choice of cold or hotbeverage. Which is a nice thought forme to imagine when I travel on the trainto NLP towers on an uncomfortablechair and without the option of a bever-age.Last weekend on the journey to the of-fice the train was filled with West HamUnited fans on their way to the top flightmatch against Bournemouth. Bychance, I got speaking to a chap satopposite who had an Irons jacket onand he began talking about how he is aseason ticket holder at West Ham butalso goes to watch Dagenham & Red-bridge ‘four or five times a season’.Two teams with a proud tradition andstanding in their community, but a caseof David and Goliath. “The bigger theyare the harder they fall.” Well, not exact-ly in this case.Ever since the city of London won thebid to host the 2012 Olympics I havefollowed the story of what the govern-ment and the Greater London Authorityplanned to do with the stadium in Strat-ford long after Mo Farah and JessicaEnnis had graced it.After the 16 days of sporting excellencewere showcased to the world, focusswitched to whether Jeremy Hunt, sportminister at the time, and Mayor BorisJohnson could get the right deal for thetaxpayer by finding a tenant who wouldprevent the stadium from turning into adefunct patch of overgrowth.Could they do it? Absolutely not.As of a year ago, £783m of taxpayers’money had been spent on the stadium

with an annual bill of £20m invoiced forsecurity and cleaning and a host of oth-er services. So bad was the deal struckby the ground owners’ London LegacyDevelopment Corporation (LLDC) withWest Ham, they appealed against agranted Freedom of Information Act re-quest to have the tenancy contractmade public. This after it was knownthat West Ham would pay £2.5m-a-yearin rent over a 99-year lease.Promotions followed for Hunt and John-son, West Ham’s co-owners sold UptonPark after 110 years on Green Street, while the Daggers sold top goalscorerOli Hawkins to Portsmouth for an undis-closed fee after relegation to the Nation-al League. Joined by fellow EastLondoners Leyton Orient in dropping tothe fifth tier, some fan groups have la-belled the tenancy agreement as ‘stateaid’. The sum of £2.5m a small drop inthe Premier League club’s well of rich-es.I brought this up with the man on thetrain who said he and a lot of other sup-porters had failed to analyse what theirboard was selling them with the move.I asked him whether it must be painfulwatching football in a stadium built forathletic purposes when Upton Park of-fered such a good atmosphere. So whynot swap his season ticket in 2019 forone at the Daggers?"They need to start winning games ifthey want to get more than 1,500through the gate," he said. "Go whereyou feel at home, you're not a 400mhurdler are you?" I joked.

Dorset Dave’s Chuckle Corner

Poole's name derives from a corruptionof the Celtic word bol and the Old Eng-lish word pool meaning a place near apool or creek. In the 2011 census thepopulation of the borough of Poole was147,645, {Wimborne's is 15,552} Poole,Bournemouth and Christchurch aresoon to be merged into one Authority.New names suggested for the conur-bation are Bournechurchpoo or Church-poomouth.

I told a friend that I went on a sailingcourse in Poole. He said “In Dorset?” Isaid, “yes, I definitely recommend it.”

I saw a Poole Town season ticketnailed to a tree. I thought I'm havingthat! Well, you can never have enoughnails can you.

Pirates have been synonymous withPoole over the ages. The most famouswas probably Isaac Gulliver.(1745-1822) who also has connections withWimborne [Gulliver House, GulliversBookshop, Gulliver Court etc].Here are a few Pirate chuckles:-

Q. How much do Pirates pay for theirpiercings?A. A Buccaneer

3.14% of sailors are Pi rates

Q.What do you call a pirate who stealsfrom the rich and gives it to the poor ?A. Robin Hook

And as promised in Saturday’s pro-gramme here are the top ten jokes vot-ed for at this year's Edinburgh Festival:

"I had a job drilling holes for water - itwas well boring" - Leo Kearse

"I took out a loan to payfor an exorcism. If Idon't pay it back, I'mgoing to get repos-sessed" - Olaf Falafel"In my last relationship,I hated being treated like a piece ofmeat. She was a vegan and refused totouch me" - Daniel Audritt"What do colour blind people do whenthey are told to eat their greens?" - Floand Joan"I've got a new job collecting all thejumpers left in the park at the week-ends, but it's not easy. They keep mov-ing the goalposts" - Darren Walsh"Trump said he'd build a wall but hehasn't even picked up a brick. He's justanother middle-aged man failing on aDIY project" - Justin Moorhouse"I lost a friend after we had an argu-ment about the Tardis. I thought it wasa little thing, but it seemed much biggeronce we got into it" - Adele Cliff"Why are they calling it Brexit and notThe Great British Break Off?" - AlexEdelman"I think love is like central heating. Youturn it on before guests arrive and pre-tend it's like this all the time" - LauraLexxAnd the top joke by Adam Rowe, whichreceived 41% of the vote :-"Working at the Jobcentre has to be atense job - knowing that if you get fired, you still have to come in the next day."

And the limerick:A young novice jockey from PooleWas sent to a horse riding schoolThe first race he was inHe had no chance to winCos' he found he was riding a mule.
