He landed in what is now Florida and began to walk in search of GOLD.

They trekked all over the Southeast and create the first maps of what is now GA.

He brought the first horses to Georgia.

Hernando and the NativesDe Soto’s men were outnumbered

by the thousands of natives.The Spanish however had far

superior weapons.◦Guns ◦Crossbows◦Armor◦Horses

They, de Soto and his men, killed THOUSANDS of Native Americans.

What happened to the natives…

Explorers such as de Soto killed any natives that got in their way. Hundreds of thousands of natives in the New World were killed.

More still were killed by disease.◦Measles◦Small Pox◦Flu◦Whooping Cough

Why did explorers explore??

Spain dominated exploration and they explored for 3 reasons.◦God: To spread Catholicism through out

the world and convert natives to Christianity.

◦Glory: For the fame and power of being the first.

◦Gold: For the riches and wealth found in places like Mexico. This was their greatest failure

England and France explored for two reasons.

Power – They did not want other countries to become more powerful than them.

Land – The more land you had…the more powerful you were…
