    A purpose clause is a clause that shows thepurpose of the action of the main clauses of asentence.

    We use a purpose clause when we want tostate the purpose of the action in theindependent clauses. The most common oftype of purpose clause is a to-infinitive clause.

    Example: Sarah went to the computer labtoprint out her research paper.

    Examples:- Take an umbrella with you in case it rains. (Because perhaps it will rain)- Ill take some food with me in case Imhungry on the journey. ( Because perhaps Iwill be hungry on the journey).

    Examples:

    -I have come here to help you.

    In order and so as can be used in front of to.

    -I have come here in order to help you.

    If the subject expressed by infinitive is not the subject ofthe main verb in the sentence, we can use the followingstructure:

    -I have come here in order for you to see my new hairstyle.

    With verbs go and come we can use theinfinitive of purpose in any present or pasttense or if these verbs are used as a gerunds

    (going, coming).

    -Im just coming to help you.

    -his coming to help was indeed a neighborlygesture.

    Patterns:

    It is often different to select the right patternin English to express the idea of purpose.There is a variety of different expressions andeach carries a slightly different meaning.

    We use the for + -ing pattern to expresswhat a thing or person is for. This patternemphasizes the use of a certain thing.

    Examples: We need clear instructions for appraising

    staff. (The purpose of the instructions)

    The general rule is to avoid in order to andso as to as much as possible. Many writingexperts, quite rightly, consider these phrasesas pretentious alternatives to the infinitive.However, there are times when we need touse these.

    Stative Verbs

    These include be, have, know, believe,recognize, impress, belong to, include,appear and seem.
