EXTERIOR FINISHES

Exterior finish materials protect the structure from sun exposure, moisture, andwind.

These materials are to be provided so that the wall can withstand extremeweather and be compatible with other components of the building.

Some examples of exterior finishes are wall cladding , wood siding , flashing ,gutters & downspouts , brick veneer , corrugated metal , fiber-cement panels ,stucco , paints and coatings .

PRINCIPAL TYPES OF COATINGS

PAINTS

Its a solution of a pigment in water, oil, or organic solvent, used to cover wood or metal articles either for protection or for appearance.

Binder

Binder makes the coat of paint retain its structure, and bindsit to the surface to which it is applied.

Solvent

Solvent dissolves the paint to make it usable at normal roomtemperatures.

Primers

They are base coats applied to a surface to improve the

adhesion of subsequent coats of paint or varnish.

Sealers

They are base coats applied to a surface to reduceabsorption of subsequent coats of paint or varnish, or toprevent bleeding through the finish coat

PAINT TYPES USED IN EXTERIORS

Snowcem Washing

It consists of base of white cement mixedwith finely powdered colouring pigment. It gives a waterproof surface.

It is manufactured in 50kg drums, 25kgdrums and 5kg tin.

Proportions : mixing 2 parts of snowcem

powder with 1 part of water by volumeand then thinning it by adding another 1part of water.

Snowcem should be used within an hour of mixing.

PAINT DEFECTS (Exterior)

Alligatoring

Patterned cracking in the surface of the paint film resembling theregular scales of an alligator.

Chalking

Formation of fine powder on the surface of the paint film duringweathering, which can cause color fading. Although some degreeof chalking is a normal, desirable way for a paint film to wear, excessive film erosion can result in heavy chalking.

Efflorescence/Mottling

Crusty, white salt deposits, leached from mortar or masonry aswater passes through it.

Paint Incompatibility

Loss of adhesion where many old coats of alkyd or oil-based paintreceived a latex top coat.

Peeling

Loss of paint due to poor adhesion. Where there is a primer andtop coat, or multiple coats of paint, peeling may involve some or all coats.

Wrinkling

A rough, crinkled paint surface occurring when paint forms a "skin.”

Plaster

Plaster is a building material used for

coating walls and ceilings and is usuallymixed with water to form a paste whichliberates heat and then hardens.

Different proportion of cement andmortar are 1:3,1:4,1:5,1:6. Generally, 1:4ration is used for plastering.

Unlike mortar and cement, plaster remains quite soft after setting, and can

be easily manipulated with metal toolsor even sandpaper. Thesecharacteristics make plaster suitable for a finishing, rather than a load-bearingmaterial.

External plastering shall be started fromtop and worked down towards floor.

For external finish preferred plaster thicknesses are 15 mm,18mm and20mm.

Plastering should be applied in 3 coats :1st coat of 10mm thick, 2nd coat of10mm-6mm and finishing coat of 5-6mm.

Plaster

Uses

Plaster is used to protect theactual structure of the building i.e.the masonry or the RCC units, fromexposure to changes in weather.

It is used as a weather proofingsealant, to protect against wind, rain and sun.

Plaster also acts as a fire-proofingmaterial both in interior as well asexterior.

Curing

Curing shall be started 24 hoursafter finishing the plaster.

The plaster shall be kept wet for aperiod of seven days.

During this period, it shall be suitablyprotected from all damages.

The dates on which the plastering is

done shall be legibly marked on thevarious sections plastered so thatcuring for the specified periodthereafter can be watched.
