    Frank and Jo Ellen

    Kopet , owners of The

Counter top Special is t ,

    invite home and business

    owners to consider upgrad-

    ing their countertops to

the look and feel of lami-

    nate countertops such as

    Formica and Wilsonart

products. As their nameimplies, the Kopets spe-

    cialize in the production

    and installation of lami-

    nate countertop surfaces.

    Laminates have really

come a long way on style

    and color schemes over the

past 15 years or so, F rank

    said. Theyre a lower

    cos t , lower maintenance

    alternative to stone, gran-

    ite, marble and other solid

    surfaces.

    Like stone, marble or

    grani te, laminates also

come in a wide variety of

    colors, textures, edges and

    patterns, from solid colors

or rock-like appearances tounique and creative pat-

    terned options. And they

    can make a dramatic differ-

    ence in kitchen or bath-

    room remodeling.

    The Countertop Special-

    ist serves both residential

    and commercial properties,

    and can customize counter-

tops to fit and enhance -

    the style and features of

    any home or business.

    A q u i c k s w i t c h

    Frank perfected his

    craftsmanship at Custom

    Plas t ic Laminates in

    Northeas t Minneapolis ,

where he worked as a fore-

man for 27 years. In 2009,

as his employer fell intobankruptcy, Frank decided

to strike out on hi s own as

    The Counter top Special-

    ist, LLC. With his skill

    and expertise in the indus-

try, he has es tabl ished

    himself as a vendor for

    apartment property man-

    agers and as a subcontrac-

    tor. The company contin-

    ues to grow, serving the

    countertop needs of

    Wright , Hennepin and

    Sherburne counties.

    While Jo Ellen handles

    the companys office work

    and communicat ions ,

    Frank handles construc-

    tion, delivery and installa-t ion.

    Offering free estimates

    and consultations, Frank

said, We go to you. We

    find out what you like,

    what you want, and then

    we will measure and give

    you an estimate.

    Often, he can do the

entire job within a week of

    the estimate. And best of

    all, the kitchen transfor-

    mation can occur in less

    than a day.

    We will remove your

    old countertops and install

new ones in the same day,

    Frank said. We do the

    whole job, from start to

    finish.K e e p i n g i t c l e a n

    While many artisans do

    their cutting work onsite,

    a major dust-maker, The

    Countertop Specialist does

all the cutting in the shop,

el iminat ing most of the

    headaches that are fre-

    quently associated with

    interior renovation proj-

    ects.

    We try to keep things

as clean as we can for

    homeowners, Frank said.

    Who wants the dust, the

    mess and being without

    countertops?

    Were happy with the

service we can provide topeople, Jo El len said.

    As a smaller shop, we

    can do that.

As spr ingt ime rol ls

    ing a remodel, contact The

    Homeowners are increas-

    ingly extending their liv-

    ing spaces outs ide the

    walls of their homes .

    Expansive and intricate

    s tonework pat ios and

    decked-out outdoor

    kitchens are the kind of

additions many homeown-ers dream of. Those with

    unlimited budgets can

    enjoy just about any look

    they desire, but many

    homeowners may not have

the money to go all the

    way with their outdoor

l iving spaces . But that

    doesn't mean it 's impossi-

    ble to create budget-friend-

    ly spaces that are func-

    tional, fun and eye catch-

    ing.

    Decks and patios are pop-

    ular gathering spots out-

    side a home, and home-

    owners have numerous

    inexpensive opt ions at

    their disposal when choos-

    ing patio materials. And

    those who can do their

    own labor when installing

a patio can save a substan-

    t ial amount of money.

    Instead of higher-priced

    composite or resin decks,

    homeowners can go with

    standard wood, which will

    need to be stained periodi-

cal ly. Scal ing back the

size of the deck means less

    materials to buy and less

    labor involved.

    The cost of patio blocks

    depends on the material

    and style. Poured concrete

    patios will cost less than

    placed blocks or stones

    because concrete is less

    labor-intensive. For those

    who desire the look of

    patio blocks without the

cost, stamped concrete canmimic the look for less.

    Homeowners may not

    need to replace patio furni-

    ture, even if chairs and

    tables have seen better

days. A can of spray paint

    can cover up any rusted

    areas or spots where paint

has peeled off due to expo-

    sure to the elements .

    Updat ing cushions and

    purchasing a coordinating

    umbrella can revitalize the

    patio's entire look. Also,

    very often stores run sales

    to clear out merchandise

    for new displays.

    Defining edges of plant-

    ing borders and refreshing

    the landscape may be all

    that is needed to improve

    the yard. This is easily

    achieved with inexpensive

    mulch and some vinyl edg-

    ing. While cleaning up the

    yard, use a pressure wash-

er to clean stains off of

    siding and patios and cre-

    ate a like-new appearance.

    End-of-season sales can

    also be the ideal opportu-

    nity t o purchase big-ticket

items like a pool, a hot

    tub or an outdoor fire-

    Sometimes saving means

    repurposing antiques or

    patient homeowners can

    find just about any item

    they may need to upgrade

    Though not all home-

    owners can afford to create

    the backyard of their

    dreams, with a little inge-

    hard work, homeowners

    can still create an outdoor

    Brides- and grooms-to-be are

    often nervous when the day

they will tie the knot finally

    arrives. The realization that

    months and months of plan-

    ning and anticipation are final-

ly about to come to a head

    often inspires some jitters in

the days leading up to the wed-

ding. But the following are a

    few ways couples can calm

those nerves in the hours lead-

ing up to the moment they

have devoted so much time and

    effort to planning since becom-

    ing engaged.

    Get a good night's rest.

    Couples should prioritize a

    good night's sleep the night

before they are set to walk

down the aisle. Make your last

    night as an unmarried couple

an early night so you will look

your best and have plenty of

energy on your big day, which

will no doubt start early and

end late. A good night's sleep

can go a long way toward

ensuring you're in a good mood

as you handle a full slate of

    responsibilities on your wed-

    ding day.

    Spend time with family

    and friends. Chances are your

    closest friends and family

    members are playing signifi-

cant roles in your wedding, and

spending time with them is a

great way to keep your nerves

in check while having a fun

    time before, during and after

    the ceremony.

    Don't be afraid to delegate

    responsibilities. In spite of

    months of planning, couples

will still have a to-do list come

their wedding days. If such a

    list is overwhelming, brides-

    and grooms-to-be should not be

afraid to delegate some of the

    tasks on their lists. Brides-

    maids and groomsmen can no

    doubt handle any outstanding

    tasks that don't require any

input from the bride or groom.

    Relax as the ceremony

draws nearer. As the start time

    for the ceremony approaches,

couples about to tie the knot

should take time to sit down

and relax. Once their hair and

    makeup is finished, brides-to-

be should sit down and exhale

    or arrange for the photographer

    to snap some fun pre-wedding

    photos with their bridesmaids.

    Grooms-to-be can do the same

    with their groomsmen, sharing

    a few last-minute jokes to

    ensure everyone is relaxed and

ready to go before taking their

    places.

    A milestone event in a

    young adult 's life, prom

    night is an occasion high

    school seniors across the

    country anxiously antici-

    pate. Prom gives high

    school students the oppor-

    tunity to enjoy one last

fling with friends and fel-low students before they

move on to col lege or

    enter the workforce.

    Prom night has become

quite a big deal. S ome stu-

    dents put undue pressure

    on themselves by trying

    to make prom into the

    perfect occasion. This can

    prove stressful. But there

are ways to make the best

    of this noteworthy night

    without succumbing to

    stress.

    DO attend prom with

    someone you enjoy being

    around. Don't pick a com-

    panion simply to have a

pretty face accompany youfor the evening. Aim for

    compatabi l i ty when

    choosing your prom date.

You do not want to be

    dancing al l night while

your date s tays at the

    table.

    DON'T set your prom

    night expectat ions too

    h igh . P rom n igh t i s a

    momentous occasion, but

it 's important to keep in

mind that it 's meant to be

    a fun night with friends.

Aim to do a little dancing,

    dining and conversing

    with friends.

    DO wear comfortable

shoes or bring a s pare pair

    of comfor table shoes

    along. Fashion often pre-

    cedes comfort when it

    comes to formal events.

    However , hours on the

dance floor can quicklyprove painful on your

    feet. Do yourself a favor

    and dress comfortably so

you will not have to make

    an exit prematurely.

    DON'T make prom

    night about more than

    having fun. This should

    be an evening simply for

    having fun and commemo-

rat ing the end of your

    school career rather than a

    night when potent ial ly

    life-altering decisions are

    made.

DO stick to a budget so

    you do not overspend on

prom night. It can be easy

to overspend on prom. While prom is meant to be

    memorable, you don' t

    want to begin summer

vacation in debt. Now is a

    key time to learn budget-

    ing strategies, which will

    be advantageous when

    you're living in a dorm

    and pinching pennies once

    college begins in the fall.

    DON'T forget to take

    plenty of photos and

    videos to capture the spir-

it of prom. You can look

    back fondly on these

    moments and perhaps

    share them with your own

    family in the years to

    come.

    DO have a contingency

    plan in place. Sometimes

    poor judgement on the

part of others can put you

    in precarious situations.

Make sure you have some-one to call if you need a

ride home at any point in

the night . Br ing some

    extra money for unforseen

    expenses . Keep parents

    abreast of your location in

the event you need to con-

    tact them. Safety should

    be a priority throughout

    the night.

    DON'T feel the need to

    have a date, especially if

    you'd rather attend solo.

    There is no shame in

    attending prom alone, par-

    t icular ly i f you have a

    plan to meet up with

    friends and enjoy the night

collectively. Rather thantake someone you do not

    particularly like and feel

    restricted, arrive alone and

    enjoy being a free spirit.

    DO let loose and have

fun. Don't be afraid to cut

a rug on the dance floor or

    wear a favorite gown or

    unique s tyle of tuxedo.

    Enjoy your t ime spent

    with friends and try to

    sample each part of what

    makes prom such a unique

    experience.

Prom night dos and don'tsMany high school students

choose to ride to their prom in

style by renting a limousine on

their big night. While kids cer-

tainly don't have to go to such

great lengths to make an impres-

sive entrance, arriving in a limo

with friends can be a fun way to

start off what is often a memo-rable night.

    When looking around for a

    limousine service, teenagers

    should comparison shop in an

attempt to find the best deal. The

following are a few things to

look for when shopping for a

    limousine service.

    Appearance: Few teenagers

or even adults have spent time in

a limousine, so judging a good

fleet from a bad fleet can be diffi-

cult. But the eyeball test can go

a long way toward helping teens

and their parents find the right

    limousine service. Limos should

be clean on the inside and out,

with no visible signs of rust or

fluids leaking from the vehicles, and vehicle upholstery should be

clean and void of any tears. A

    company that treats its vehicles

poorly is more likely to treat its

customers poorly as well, so an

    attractive, well-maintained fleet

of vehicles is a good sign.

    Flexibility: When shopping

for a limousine for prom, teens

    should find a company that's

willing to work with them on

    the cost. Unlike couples renting

    a limousine for their wedding,

teens heading to the prom won't

need certain accessories, such as a

fully stocked mini bar inside the

    vehicle or even post-prom trans-

    portation, which is often

    arranged by schools that host

    post-prom festivities on campus.

So teens should look for a com-

pany that's flexible in their pric-

ing and willing to work with

    their budget.

    That flexibility also should

extend to the type of vehicles the

company has to offer. The more

    prom-goers you can include in

your group, the less the cost per

head is likely to be. If you have

yet to get commitments from all

of your friends, look for a com-

pany with a fleet of vehicles that

    can accommodate both large and

small groups. This gives you and

your friends a chance to figure

out the cost per person of both

    large and small limousines, and

such figures may be just what

    you need to convince more

friends to ride with you to prom.

    Contract: Prom season is a

    busy time for limousine compa-

nies, as it happens to coincide

    with the beginning of wedding

season. When you have found a

    company you like, make sure

they print out a detailed contract

    that includes the exact vehicle

you will be using on prom

night. You don't want a different

vehicle than the one you expect-

ed to pull into your driveway on

    prom night. In addition, make

sure the contract spells out exact-

ly what happens if the vehicle is

changed. If a problem with a

    vehicle should arise, many com-

    panies will automatically

    upgrade customers to a larger

    vehicle, but customers must

    make sure that such upgrades

will be made at no additional

    cost. The contract also should

spell out other details of the

    night, including pickup and drop-

off time and any repercussions if

that schedule is not adhered to.

    Renting a limousine on prom

night is a tradition that adds

some glamour to an already spe-

cial night. But teens must con-

sider a host of factors when

    choosing a limousine service to

ensure their night starts off with-

    out a hitch.
