What is figurative language, and how does it make writing more interesting? (0801.8.8) (CCSS RL4)

Project Will have to read a poem on Jan. 25 or Feb. 1. You get a 100 if you recite and a 90 if you

read it. You must write 22 poems. You must put the poems in a folder that must

be neat and have a cover page. Final project is due Feb. 8.

ALLITERATION

The repetition of the initial consonant. There should be at least two repetitions in a row.

For example: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. The first letter, p, is a consonant. It is repeated many times.

ASSONANCE

Repetition of vowel sounds

Ex. Feet creep by sleeping geeks

ALLUSIONA reference to a person, thing, story,…etc. outside the poem.

RHYMERepetition of sounds at the end of words

Ex. I think that I shall never see,

A poem lovely as a tree.

END RHYME

When rhyming words come at the endEx. Imagine a world where work is like play

INTERNAL RHYME

When two or more words rhyme within the line.

Ex. I bring fresh showers, for thirsting flowers on this may morning.

SLANT RHYME

Words that have any kind of similar sound

I shut the door on the racket

Of that horrible rush hour traffic.

LIMERICK POEM

A limerick is a kind of a witty, humorous, or nonsense poem.

Lines 1, 2, and 5 of Limericks have seven to 10 syllables and rhyme with one another. Lines 3 and 4 of Limericks have five to seven syllables and also rhyme with each other.

EXAMPLE OF LIMERICK

An exceedingly fat friend of mine, When asked at what hour he'd dine,      Replied, "At eleven,      At three, five, and seven, And eight and a quarter past nine.

EXAMPLE OF LIMERICK

A macho young swimmer named Dwyer, Really liked playing with fire. One night in the dark He swam with a shark, And his voice is now two octaves higher.
