“All good things come to us through the church.” Saint Jeanne Jugan

During a recent visit to California, my family and I attended mass at American Martyrs Catholic Church in Manhattan Beach. As mass began, I noticed there were three young girl altar servers carrying the candles in during the procession. One of the altar servers had her arm tightly wrapped around the other girl’s arm which seemed rather unusual. As mass began, the altar server continued to keep her arm around the other girl as they continued serving. I finally realized that the second altar server was blind. I cannot express to you how touching it was to watch how carefully and happily the girls served together. It brought tears to my eyes to see the blind girl able to be serving at mass and to see her smiling so peacefully and trusting in the other girls’ assistance, and the other girl so comfortable in helping. This is church. We felt very blessed to attend this mass and witness the love you could feel surround you.

Here at St. Joseph, we feel your love and kindness too. We would like to thank the parish, once again, for you generous and continuous contribution of rose petals to the Discalced Carmelite Sisters of Des Plaines. You have helped the sisters create many rosaries using the rose petals you have donated. In return, the sisters send us their love, gratitude and prayers. We have collected the rose petals every week for nine years now!

If you would like to donate rose petals, just remove the petals from the stems and place them in an open paper bag in the rose box. (avoid plastic bags and molded petals) The box is located on the shelf in the hallway by the sacristy. To re-quest a rosary or chaplet, please contact Joanne Bezad at 630-543-5012 or visit the Carmelite Monastery at 1101 N. River Road (at Central) in Des Plaines, Illinois, 60016.

It is a simple thing to donate your rose petals but it makes a huge difference. The rosaries mean a great deal to those re-questing them, usually after funerals or weddings. The more rosaries the sisters make, the more people pray them. Prayer changes things and shows God’s love at work when we walk “arm-in-arm” to help and care for one another. Much Gratitude, The Discalced Sisters of Des Plaines and Joanne Bezad O.C.D.S.

FORGIVENESS Nearly ten years before, a son and father had parted

ways when the business they shared went bankrupt. The son blamed the father. They did not speak to each other

again. Then the father became seriously ill. The mother

called the son and told him he had better come soon. The son walked sheepishly into the hospital room. The father motioned his son to him and whispered: “Did you ever think you could do anything that would keep me from

loving you?” Resentment and anger are foul things, the first

reading from Sirach tells us. Remember the last things. Stop hating. Live by the commandments. As St. Paul

writes to the Romans, we are to live for the Lord and die for the Lord.

For us Americans on the tenth anniversary of September 11, 2001, forgiveness still does not come

easily. Yet Jesus’ parable in today’s Gospel reminds us of God’s compassion. The immense sin of humanity has

been forgiven and stricken from the record. We are to forgive others in the same way.

Time, Talent & Treasure Fostering Stewardship as a way of life

we gratefully acknowledge and salute:

DEACON PHIL MARROW Who have donated countless hours of hard work, dedication

and devotion to the parish.

Stewardship Thought for the Week As stewards of Jesus we are called to forgive others as God forgives us. Often it is easier to ask for and accept forgiveness than it is to forgive others for wrongs they have committed or debts they owe. Let us live as prayerful and forgiving people, ever-mindful of the love, mercy and forgiveness that God has shown us.
